Finally getting over the storm
Melany stared at the night sky, taking in everything that had changed since she had arrived at Shifter Academy in June. She compared herself to Zoey Redbird, the character in the book she was reading. Zoey had just arrived at “The House of Night” which was a vampire finishing school, and Zoey’s life had already changed majorly since she arrived at the school only a few months ago, as had Melany’s life changed since she arrived at Shifter Academy. Only there were some major differences between Melany’s and Zoey’s lives.
Melany looked at the book that was next to her, and sighed. She loved to read, and she was loving the House of Night series. She was already on the fifth book in the series and she had only begun to read it a week ago. She smiled, thinking back on Zoey’s adventures. She thought of when she had first arrived at the school and had been scared, then Melany thought of when Zoey had first figured out she could control all five elements.
These thoughts led to Melany thinking about her own life. She thought about how she hadn’t known she was adopted until the previous May, she thought of how just a short time ago she hadn’t even known that her real last name was Smith. She remembered the hurricane, and how it had been tragic, but how it had also brought her and Mollie together. She thought of how during the hurricane she had also met Ethan, who had become one of her closer friends. She recalled breaking her right leg; she remembered the pain so well she had to look down to make sure it wasn’t happening again. She looked at the crutches that rested by her bed, and she sighed a deep, sad sigh. She remembered what it was like to surf, and swim, she hadn’t swam or surfed since the hurricane nearly six months ago. She couldn’t help but smile sadly at the remembrance of her life before she had come to Shifter Academy, her life in California. Sure, her
Melany was suddenly very homesick. She remembered her old room, her old house, her old school. Even though she had not had many friends there, it was still home to her.
Melany shook herself, trying to get the thoughts out of her head. She grabbed her teddy bear she had bought from one of the airports on her way to S.A., and went back to thinking about her life once she had arrived.
She thought of the hurricane again, but quickly moved on once she began thinking about her leg. She thought about Jamie, the boy she had met when she was cleaning up some debris on the beach after the storm. Jamie was her age; he had brown hair and a great smile. Melany had a crush on him; she usually developed crushes on most guys she was friends with. She did not know if Jamie knew she liked him, but she had a feeling Jamie liked her. Melany smiled, thinking of how he had helped her that day on the beach since she had crutches. She thought of how many times she had hung out with him after that, which was everyday. She hugged her teddy bear close, thinking of how Jamie had told her he didn’t like water, and how she had been trying to get him to like it ever since.
She couldn’t help but laugh as she thought of Jamie. He really was one of her closest friends…and then her smile fell. E.T. was, is, her best friend, and she suddenly missed him more than anything or anyone.
Melany sighed not wanting to deal with her life anymore; she picked up her book and began to read again.
Well, she thought, at least I’m not up against a powerful High Priestess like Zoey Redbird.
