-x- Why did humans only have two hands? It was so inconvenient when trying to carry a lot of stuff. Someone should invent arm transplants or something to give everyone four arms. That was an interesting idea… It did raise the question of where you would get all those arms from… grave robbery… where else would you get so many arms at short notice. Thinking about it more, it was probably easier to just own less stuff. These were the thoughts running through Mitchell’s head as he dragged his case through the door into his new dorm room. His other arm was wrapped around a cardboard box containing all the junk he couldn’t be bothered to put in his case. This made manoeuvring through the door rather difficult. He managed to get through eventually though, and dumped the box on the nearest bed.
Mitchell had left his old room after his room mates got annoyed at him scribbling away into the early hours of the morning when they were trying to sleep. He wasn’t noisy and he only used a small lamp aimed at him but still, they complained. Intolerant, that’s what they were. Still, he was here now and he’d been told there was currently only one other occupant. As it was the room was empty. One of the bedside tables had some stuff on it, so that bed obviously belonged to someone. Mitchell wheeled his case around to the foot of the bed his box was on. This one would do fine. He would unpack later. His box, on the other hand, had most of the stuff from his old table in it and could be unpacked easily.
The first thing to come out was Mitchell’s iPhone, which he set to shuffle to give him something to listen to while unpacking. He didn’t have his headphones in so the sound was emitted from the weak microphone, providing just the right level of volume. The first song that came on was cute, but sad. Mitchell generally stayed away from sad songs, but he liked this one for some reason. He unpacked quickly, shoving everything on to the bedside table. A notepad and pen, his lamp, a plushie Knuckles from Sonic that he’s won from one of those claw arm machines just to prove he could do it, a box containing his handheld games consoles and a tangle of cables for charging his various electronic appliances. He sat his Knuckles on top of these. He’d grown oddly attached to that thing, even though he’d only won it to prove a point. The boy folded the cardboard box and sat on the bed. When he was younger he probably would have wanted to tape the box closed and pretend it was a fighting robot like in the TV program… but he had matured, even if it was just a little.
Mitchell looked to his bed. It was exactly the same as his last one, sat in the corner of a room almost identical to his old one. The bed was covered with the same sheets, just like every other bed in this place. While Mitch appreciated them for their ability to keep him cool on warm nights he much preferred the tick warm duvets that were common at home. They were much more cosy, like a little nest around you. Ah well, better than sleeping without any cover, he thought. The Stoat shifter was distracted by the sound of a door opening, looking up he caught sight of his new room mate.

Zero turned up the volume on his ipod as he walked to his dorm. Today was a good day. He had woken up especially early that morning and got several good hours of swimming in. His hair was still wet from it. Zero loved the water. He loved to surf. Zero had always been into surfing, even when he was a kid. It was his escape. His escape from his family. He used to go surfing a lot with his twin. Zero liked to think that if his twin was still alive, he would be a shifter too. Perhaps even the same shift as him.
Wish you were still around bro thought Zero, shacking his head sadly. He flipped open his phone and glanced at the time. Nearly noon, his roommate should be arriving any time now. That is, if he hasn't already.
I wonder what shift my roommate is. Hope it's some sort of aquatic shift or something.
Zero was lost in his thoughts as she pulled out his keys and unlocked the door. He stepped right in, his head bent as he scrolled through he different songs on his ipod. He kicked the door closed and walked over to his bed.
His bed had a mound of clothes on it that needed to be washed, and various other items. Zero hadn't gotten around to washing them yet. Zero didn't mind clutter all that much, he was a pack rat. However, he had spent all of yesterday cleaning out his dorm when he heard he was getting a roommate. First impressions are always important.
I hope this guy isn't all up-tight and stuff. Oh well. It'll be nice to finally have a roommate. I wonder when he's going to arrive.
Zero took his earbuds out and tossed his ipod on to his bed. "Wonder when the newbie's gonna show his face," said Zero aloud to himself. He often talked out loud to himself. It was a habit of his. Zero turned to leave.
And then he saw Mitchell. "Holy cow! What the H-" He stopped. Right, new roommate. Zero took in a deep breath, trying to regain his composure. "Sorry, I guess I just didn't see you there. You must be my new roomie, huh?" He gestured to Mitchell's stuff. "I'm Zero. Nice to meet you. Welcome!"
He flashed a smile. The guy looked friendly enough. So far so good. "So, you new to Shifter's or did you get kicked out of your dorm?"

-x- The boy that walked into the room looked just a little younger than Mitchell was himself, though not young enough to make it annoying or awkward. He was bent over his ipod or mp3 player or whatever it was. Mitchell’s first thought was ‘oh go, he’s not going to be one of those music nuts who blocks out everything around them is he?’ The boy’s hair was a little wet, as though he’d just been in the shower or something. He moved over to one of the other beds, the one with the small hill of clothing on it. Mitchell wasn’t exactly the tidiest, and could stand things like that, he actually did the same sometimes. But he would have made the effort to clean up for his new roommate, at lest until he knew what annoyed him. Luckily Mitchell was blessed with British tolerance. Things that annoyed him he could ignore, though he would moan about them constantly to other people.
The pile of clothes didn’t really bother him though, at worst he could just tell him to move them. If he didn’t listen well… enter the Britishness. So long as this guy didn’t ignore him like he was currently doing. His new roommate dropped his mp3 onto the bed, beside the clothes mound. Me muttered to himself. nothing special, Mitch had been known to talk to himself on occasion. Still, wondering when he was going to show his face was a bit amusing. Mitchell just sat, looking in the direction of the person he was essentially going to be living with for the foreseeable future, wondering how long it would hake him to notice.
As it turned out, not long. The other boy turned and caught sight of him. His reaction was amusing. In his entire life Mitchell had never heard anyone say ‘holy cow’. The Stoat shifter raised an eyebrow as whatever-his-name-was spoke. Silly question? Yes. What would he be doing here if he wasn’t? And how would he have gotten in? Deserving of sarcasm? Oh yes! ”Nope, ghost of Christmas past. You, sir, must change your ways.” He kept his face straight for a second or two before cracking into a smile. Zero, huh? Interesting. ”Nice to meet you too, Zero. Keats, Mitchell Keats. Thanks for the welcome.” His accent was full on, he never bothered hiding it. Besides, people seemed to like it.
Mitchell returned The smile sent his way, This Zero guy didn’t seem all that bad really. His next question was probably to be expected, oh well. ”Zero is a bit of a strange name, no offence meant. I’m here because my previous roommates were less than appreciative of my late night activities… and I realise as soon as I say that that it is rather dubious sounding. I write, sometimes late into the night. My previous roommates said it interrupted their sleep. I think they were just being silly though, I wasn’t really disturbing anyone.” Mitchell was known for his rather fluid way of speaking. Even when he wasn’t sure what to say he would keep talking, hoping something useful would emerge. After a second Mitch realised his own ipod was still playing… and had just gone on to the next song. The lion king… I just can’t wait to be king. Maybe not so good for a first impression? He reached across to his table, turning off his ipod. Hopefully his new roommate would appreciate classic Disney?

Zero laughed lightly at Mitchell's sarcasm. He could tell that Mitchell was going to a fun roomate. “Guess that makes me Scrooge, huh? Well I downright refuse to change my ways, you're just going to have to get used to living with a slob. Believe me, I've tried to clean up somewhat before you came. You can see how that turned out. Other then that I'm a pretty good roomie.”
Zero pushed aside his pile of clothes and sat down on the edge of his bed as he listened to Mitchell talk. It wasn't the first time someone has commented about his unusual name. By now Zero had gotten used to it.
“My birth name is Luke Stiller actually, but after I left the house I started to go by Zero Zag. Honestly I don't think that name fits me at all. Do I seem like a Luke to you? I don't think so. I admit it's a bit of a strange name, but at least I can have pride in knowing that I'm the only person in the world that has that name."
Zero shrugged. "Anyways, it sounds like you had some pretty stiff roommates. I'm fine with you writing at night, doesn't bother me none. I'm usually up and about at night anyways. Besides, I can practically sleep through anything. I'm not much of the writing type myself and I can't do anything real artistic. I do like to doodle.”
He reached over and picked up his notebook off of his bed. It was a little beat up and the edges of it were bent. Not only that, the back of the notebook was torn. On the front cover of the notebook it read, 'zigging and zagging' in fancy letters. Making fancy letters was really the only thing he was good at artistic wise. He flipped it open and turned it so that Mitchell could see his little random doodles. To be honest, a small child could draw better than Zero.
That was when he noticed the music in the background. “The Lion King, huh? Personally I'm more of a Finding Nemo fan, but the Lion King is pretty sweet.” He turned the page of his notebook to reveal several drawings of characters from Finding Nemo.
”Hey, look at that,” said Zero, suddenly distracted. He leaned down and picked up a roll of blue duct tape that was on the floor. “So that's where it went! I was wondering where I put this.”
He tore off a piece of duct tape and placed it over the tear on the back of his notebook. He nodded approvingly at his work. “Yep, duct tape is good for just about anything. Don't know what I'd do without it.”

-x- Mitchell’s smile grew wider at Zero’s response. It was good that he had a sense of humour, and that he didn’t mind sarcasm. Those were two things Mitchell operated heavily on. His previous room-mates weren’t really for either. He had quite often been shushed when trying to get a laugh. Still, they could sit and be quiet and boring now, couldn’t they. In truth the room wasn’t all that messy. There was a bit of tidying that could be done but it wasn’t anything major. ”Ah, fair enough. It’s not all that bad. I’m not so tidy myself, so as long as you don’t dump your stuff on my bed we’ll be just fine, and if you do dump stuff on my bed, it’s going out the window, jus giving you fair warning.” His tone was friendly, showing that he wasn’t entirely serious. But at the same time he gave no outright indication that he was joking. He didn’t actually plan on throwing anything out the window just yet, but it was nice to keep people guessing just a little.
Mitchell gave an interested nod. It was odd that he had changed to such an unusual name. But then again almost everyone strove to be individual and unique in some way or another. No-one was happy being one in a crowd, or at least not many people were. Even the people who just sailed through life beneath the radar secretly wished they could be more noticeable. Mitchell looked the other boy up and down… He could imagine him as a Luke, but then he had only ever met one Luke to compare him to and he couldn’t even remember the other Luke’s name. There was one thing he had to do before answering though… He cupped his hands over his mouth. ”Luke… I am your father.” He took his hands away, giving a little grin and hoping that Zero hadn’t heard the joke too many times before. ”Sorry… I couldn’t resist… well, I could but I didn’t want to. Interesting fact about Vader though; the guy who played him on screen was from Scotland… or Somewhere in England, some accent that didn’t lend itself as easily to the kind of darkly sinister and powerful. Not when compared to James Earl Jones anyway. As for you looking like a Luke… I can think of better names but I can sort of see it. You look more of a Luke than Mark Hamill ever did. Another interesting face, he does the voice of the Joker in all the batman cartoons. It’d be annoying for the guy who played Vader that Skywalker is capable of doing a more sinister voice than you. Sorry, I got rather off topic there. I do that sometimes.” More like all the time really but Mitchell wasn’t going to say that.
Mitchell gave another nod. His roommates were a rather boring bunch. ”Yeah, they weren’t very fun. Glad you don’t mind. I’m… not exactly nocturnal, just more active in the evenings. I’d rather not do mornings but I quite often have to if I want to make my classes on time. And I am a bit of a doodler myself. Thinking time is perfect for doodling. I have pages and pages of notes with little scribbles down the side.” Mitchell quite liked this boy. He seemed agreeable, they had quite a lot in common, or so it seemed at the moment.
The stoat shifter gave an approving nod when Mitchell showed his doodles. They weren’t the most skilful to put it simply, but doodles weren’t about skill, they were about…. Well, nothing really. Mitchell doodled because he needed to keep his hands busy while he thought and he liked the look of the little black and white pictures by the side of his notes. Zero probably doodled for a different reason. ”Very masterful.” He said half-jokingly.
Disney was one subject Mitchell could go on about for hours. And he intended to, if Zero proved to have different views and allowed him to continue. ”The old Disney films are the greatest. This new Pixar stuff isn’t all bad but it’s just not up to par with some of the greats of the past. Ilion king is most definitely my favourite. But I like them all. There have been a few good ones since the ‘gold ages’, as it were, like Nemo and the latest Toy Story, oh, and Wall-E. But none of them are in the same league as the classics. Nice doodles by the way. I’ve done Simba a couple of times but finding him would be… difficult.” To illustrate his point he opened his suitcase and dipped his hand in, rooting around a little until he got a grip on a thick folder. Pulling it out, he opened it and flicked though it, showing the tree’s worth of paper to his new room-mate. The folder was packed full. Some pages were almost full of notes and ideas, others just had a few scribbled lines.
Mitchell couldn’t deny that duct tape was an Omni-tool of sorts. He didn’t even need to say anything, just nod in agreement. The only downside was that it didn’t really look neat. That didn’t matter all that much really, but if you ripped something that was supposed to be official it was unlikely to be accepted anywhere.
Mitchell gave a quick sweep of the room, as if looking for something to talk about. After a moment he settled on a nice open topic. ”So, what do you do in your free time? Hang around here, or go out and look for fun?

This Michell guy sure had a sense of humor. Zero laughed at the Darth Vader impersonation. It wasn't the first time someone had done that as a joke when they learned his real name. He didn't mind, he appreciated the humor. He sure knows a lot of interesting tidbits, thought Zero tilting his head slightly as he listened to Mitchell talk. He was glad to hear that Mitchell doodled as well. There was one thing they had in common. Zero's fears of having a roommate that he wouldn't get along with faded. Mitchell went on to talk about Disney. Zero nodded as he talked, agreeing with most of what he said. Then he mentioned Wall-E, and Zero made a face.
“Wall-E? No way. That movie was just to rake in some more cash. I mean, two robots that fall in love? That's just weird really. Honestly it started to bore me halfway through. Granted, the movie wasn't completely awful but I wouldn't put it up there with Finding Nemo and Toy Story. Toy Story 3 turned out alright, I thought for sure that it was going to be a piece of trash. I actually liked it as much as the original, which is saying something. Disney, on the other hand, has made some pretty horrible movies in the past. G-Force being on the top of the list. The Princess and the Frog wasn't that great either. I mean, for most of the movie the characters were frogs.” He hoped Mitchell wouldn't take offense at his words.
Zero couldn't help but be impressed by Mitchell's collection of papers. Mitchell was definitely more talented than Zero when it came to drawing and doodling. His pages were filled with notes, ideas and even some doodles. “Very nice. You have quite a collection there. Never attempted to draw Simba myself.”
Mitchell asked him what he did in his spare time. Zero grinned. “Make trouble, what else? Although I do swim a lot. I try to swim everyday for a couple hours, usually after school. Helps burn off that energy. Sometimes I'll surf, when I get the chance. Haven't done that for awhile since my surfboard broke during the hurricane. I'm saving up for a new one. When I'm not causing trouble or swimming usually I am just hanging out with friends or doodling. I like to collect things, random objects that I find. Got a good collection of seashells.” He looked over at Mitchell, wondering what his shift was. He always liked to make a guess at what a person's shift was based off of their personality. However, he couldn't quite figure what Mitchell's shift could possibly be. A bird shift perhaps? No, that didn't seem right. He was stumped. “So how about you? What do you like to do for fun? Besides writing and doodling, that is.”

-x- Mitchell gave a little half shrug at Zero’s comments on Wall-E. He could see the point that was being made, but he didn’t agree with it. ”Well really, everything that they do is to make money. Why would they do it if they were making a loss? And it’s interesting that you don’t buy the premise of robots that love but you do like the idea of living toys that show both friendship and love. I think most people dislike the newer movies because they aren’t young enough anymore. If you were 8 or so years younger then you’d love that film. But because you’re older it doesn’t click. Toy Story 3 works because it sends you back to your childhood. They did it well, it’s not easy to make that connection with changes as significant as the ones in that film, but it worked out well for them. Wall-E, being an original Idea, doesn’t have the ability to send you back to when you were little. Personally I like the message it sends, about emotions being universal. I don’t know if Kits will understand it but it’s still good.” Mitchell didn’t feel all that strongly about the newer movies. He liked the classics a lot more, and would defend them with more passion than the conversational manner he was adopting now. ”Unfortunately I haven’t seen either G-force or The princess and the Frog. I’ve hear they weren’t the best though.”
Mitchell was liking Zero already. He seemed like someone he could get along with. The pair seemed quite similar, at least in Mitchell’s eyes, though different enough to keep things interesting. People got along better if they had some differences. Otherwise it would just get boring. Mitchell didn’t know quite enough about the other boy yet but he seemed like a person he could get along with him.
One thing Mitchell was a little unsure about was Zero’s response of ‘make trouble’. Mitchell wasn’t perfect but he didn’t like getting into too much trouble. Putting his hands up in a way someone might do if they were trying to show that they hadn’t touched something, Mitchell started speaking slowly for once. [‘color=maroon]”Woah… Make… what sort of trouble exactly? I’m fine with harmless pranks and the like but if professors are going to be knocking on the door looking for you I want you to know I’ll have nothing to do with it from now.” He kept his tone light and conversational but still tried to show that he was serious. Swimming was a better pastime though. Something harmless and constructive to burn energy. When Mitchell got too much energy he wrote. He would write about whatever. Anything or nothing, it didn’t matter. When he got too much energy it got his mind working. Writing was his outlet. That and doodling. ”Well Swimming is good. I don’t mind a good swim every once in a while. Not a regular thing for me though. Sorry to hear about your board. I hope it won’t take too long for you to get a new one. Hanging out and doodling are both perfectly acceptable pastimes too.” Zero seemed almost like a typical teenager. Was he a surfer, that could be interesting. Mitchell would have to probe him with questions at some point, find out his views on some things. See what type of character he could be in a story. As for himself, Mitchell didn’t really do a lot now he thought about it. What he did do though he did with interest. ”Well… Apart from doodling and writing I too spend time with friends. I spend quite a lot of time people watching too, you know, sort of finding out about people. Making up stories of their lives. It’s quite interesting really. I sometimes just sit and think but I’m sure you won’t find that all that interesting. I’ll give anything a try though. Like, if someone offers to show me how. Or learning about something new. Especially if the person is really interested in whatever it is. You can hear it when they talk about it. And I’m a bit of an amateur cook as well, though my recipes aren’t really what you’d call normal.” He gave another little half-shrug as if to say ‘well that’s me’. There was one question Mitchell wanted to ask. He often waited a little before actually asking it though. People weren’t always that keen about talking about their shifts. Zero seemed alright though. ”So… I’m actually curious as to your shift and I’m sure you’re wondering the same thing about me. I’m a stoat. Like the little ferret-like animal. And you are?” He hoped Zero wouldn’t mind the sudden topic shift. He seemed like the kind of person to be ok with it though. [/blockquote]
