x "My brother's a senior here. He's a lion shift. Mom was sure he was going to be a reptilian shift like herself. His shift sure suits him though." Azure's brother was the exact opposite of herself. He was completely comfortable with his shift, and so sure about everything he did. And very, very strong.
Connor could be a little cocky at times, but what was even worse was that he was overprotective. Especially when it came to Azure. He made it his duty to "watch" over her, and scare away any potential boyfriends he found unfit for his sister. He didn't mean to be controlling, but the truth of the matter was that he was. Despite this, Azure loved him anyways. After all, he was her brother. And he was just looking out for her.
"I'll try shifting again. Today, before I lose my nerve." She smiled, a little nervous about her decision. It had to be done. She couldn't keep living like this!
If she felt more comfortable with her shift, that would make her much more confident. Maybe then she would be able to cut back on all that tea...So far Azure has gotten tea poisoning twice. The second time wasn't too bad, but the first was a scare. But tea calmed her, soothed her. She needed it!
So even though her roomie took away all her tea bags, Azure just bought some more. The addiction was getting worse. Dangerous even.
If Connor found out.... Azure shivered. She didn't want to think about that right now.
"This is going to be hard," whispered Azure, wrapping her arms around herself.
"Find a place quiet and sheltered...quiet and sheltered," said Azure, speaking out loud to herself. "Where would be a good place to shift?"
She frowned slightly. "Hopefully this will help me connect more with my shift..." Upon saying this, Azure frowned. Was that a bad or a good thing? Azure noticed that even Connor changed a bit after he started shifting everyday. That's when he became obsessed with sports, especially with football. Connor was either sleeping (which he did a lot), in the weight room, or playing football. Before his shift, he wasn't really interested in many sports....
Azure took in a deep breath. She would do this. She had to.
No matter the consequences.

x Theo’s eyes widened a little when Azure told him what her older brother’s shift. It wasn’t a fearful look that came over him though, but amazement. There were some people with really exotic and amazing shifts but a lion was just incredible. Theo would love to meet someone with a lion for an animal. They would surely be brave and strong. Lions lived in prides too so they were surely very protective of their family. Theo couldn’t help the feelings of jealousy he was feeling right now. He tried to ignore them though, it wasn’t something he could change and it wasn’t fair on Azure. And anyway, Theo had to admit he would be a little scared to meet someone with a lion shift. At least until he’d gotten to know them, like he was doing with Azure.
”Wow, I bet your brother is great. It must be nice having a big older brother to look out for you.” Maybe that was the coward in him speaking. Maybe having a big older brother would make him a little braver. Theo had always been able to count on his friends if he had gotten into trouble, and they had been great, but they were different. None of his friends had been the protective type and they had gotten into trouble just as much as him, if not more. Not just with bullies and the like either. Theo and his friends had been in trouble with people in the area around where they lived quite often. Not that any brother could sort that out. The little group had often made nuisances of themselves and been punished accordingly.
Theo’s face lit up when Azure spoke next. She was going to try shifting today. He had helped her. He had hopefully started to make her just a little bit more secure with herself. He didn’t feel so bad anymore. He beamed at her, showing how happy he was at her decision. She didn’t seem to be too confident though. The older student hugged herself, looking unsure. ”Don’t be worried, it’s not so bad. You shouldn’t think too much about it. Just do it.” She was talking out loud to herself. Theo looked on, slightly concerned. If she thought too much about it she might get nervous and change her mind, like Theo often did when trying something new and scary.
The young boy thought hard. Where could she shift that was quiet. Maybe in her dorm if her room mates didn’t mind. Or some secluded place outside, away from people. He spoke up, feeling a little uncomfortable for suggesting something that she should decide herself. ”Maybe… I could leave and you could shift here… If you wanted to that is. It’s quiet here and there’s the bushes to hide in. I just thought if you didn’t think about it too much or wait too long it would be better…” He wasn’t sure what she would make of his suggestion but he gave a hopeful smile in her dirsction.

x Azure began to freak out, in her mind at least. All her fears came rushing back to her. I can't believe I actually agreed to do this! I'm going crazy! I don't want to shift into a snake. I don't want to. No one likes snakes. Snakes are horrible!
Azure swallowed, forcing herself to remain calm in front of Theo. "Connor is nice, very protective, nice."
Azure thought about Theo's suggestion. No one was out and about. She looked over her shoulder, towards the bushes. It was now or never.
"Here? Alright." She wrinkled her nose. The thought of shifting wasn't very appealing to her. But she was beginning to hyperventilate a little, so perhaps she should just get it over with. Azure stood up.
"Uh, okay. I'll go shift. Over there." She gave a short nod, then turned sharply and headed off. She walked till she was well out of sight. It wasn't hard to find some bushes which provided good cover. She closed her eyes, readying herself to shift. For a moment nothing happened.
Then there was a pop. Soon the uncomfortable feeling took hold of her entire body. Her bones snapped angrily. She could feel herself shrinking. Falling. Her arms went numb. She couldn't feel them anymore.
And then, it was all over.
At first, Azure was a little confused. Luckily, her mind began to clear. She slithered from out of the bushes, feeling her belly brushing the forest floor.
Here's the thing. Snakes, they don't have legs. They don't have fins. Nothing. For Azure, shifting from a human to a snake was not natural. It felt weird, not being able to use one's arms. Or legs.
Why couldn't I get an animal with legs? Is that too much to ask for?
Azure slithered along slowly back towards Cub, watching her surroundings with care. After all, there might be another shifter nearby. You never know. After meeting a fly shifter at SA, Azure vowed to never kill another insect again while attending school.
She was too freaked out that if she stepped on a spider, that it might actually have been a shifter. Even spiders have legs.... Azure lifted her head slightly, flickering her tongue as she did. She wondered if she really should go find Cub. After all, she was a snake. A Black Mamba. And Black Mambas aren't short, tiny snakes. Far from it. Try about ten or eleven feet long.

x Theo imagined what it would be like to have an older brother as Azure confirmed his suspicions. It must be nice for her. But would having a protective big brother have changed how Theo was? Would his shift be different? It was a strange and slightly scary thought, but if he had grown up that way he wouldn’t care, would he.
The young boy was surprised when Azure agreed to shift, right now. He thought she would want to go somewhere safe, or at least have some privacy first. She stood, indicating that she was going off by herself. Theo was actually a little relieved. He had seen someone shift before and it had been quite a strange experience, and that had been into an animal with four legs. Seeing someone become a snake would be freaky. He imagined seeing Azure’s limbs disappear and scales cover her body. He shivered mentally.
Giving an encouraging smile as the older student walked off, Theo sat for a moment or two looking after Azure. He hoped she managed to shift ok and didn’t get too scared or nervous. He hoped it didn’t hurt too much as well. It did hurt at first. It got better though. Theo used to sneak out at night and wander the streets as a fox, and the constant shifting had allowed him to grow used to the feeling. It was still discomforting but it didn’t hurt as such. Theo wondered if it was considered weird to do as he had done. To shift just to spend time as an animal. He had felt it freed him, he didn’t have any responsibilities and no-one expected anything of him. He wondered if he could do it here as well… he felt weird leaving his dorm at night though, the academy was always so busy, seeing it deserted was strange.
After a little while Theo realized Azure hadn’t actually said weather he should leave or not. Maybe she would want her privacy. He debated internally for a while, should he leave? He eventually decided he should stay. If he had left and she came back she might want to talk, and if he wasn’t there she might think he’d abandoned her or he didn’t care. He settled for turning his back to the area she had headed. He wondered if she was going to come back as a human or a snake. Maybe having his back to her wasn’t a good idea.
He stayed sat there for a while… Hoping it was enough time for her to shift. He slowly turned and looked back the way Azure had disappeared. He saw nothing. He stood slowly, looking around. The boy took a tentative step forward. Should he go and look for her? He took another few steps, looking around. He didn’t see anything. ”Azure… Are you ok?” he called out tentatively. As soon as he said it he realized how stupid he was to call out. If she was still shifted she couldn’t respond. He settled for standing awkwardly, not sure weather she wanted him to search for her. She would come if she wanted him, right? He sat again and waited, wondering how she would look when he next saw her.

I hope he doesn't freak out too much when he sees me. What if he steps on me accidentally? That would hurt.
"Azure...Are you okay?" called Cub, breaking her troubled thoughts.
Azure froze. His voice sounded near. It'll be fine. He knows what my shift is..., She slithered in the direction Cub's voice came from. It didn't take her too long to spot the young boy. Azure blinked. When did Cub get so tall? He was a giant! Azure shrunk back, suddenly fearful. Come on, Azure! get a grip. What are you afraid of? She forced herself to move closer, her gun-metal colored skin shifting over the rough grass. I can't wait till I have my legs back.
Azure slowed as she closed the distance between her and Cub. I don't want to scare him...This could be problematic. I can't yip to get his attention, like Cub did. All I can do is...hiss. Great. Well, here goes nothing.
A little timid, Azure gave a soft hiss. She hissed again, louder this time. Her black mouth hung open. Come on, Cub, turn around! She lifted her body above the ground slightly, trying to get Cub's attention. So far she was failing.
Azure was only a couple of feet away from Cub. It felt odd to be so close to a human while she was in her snake form. Even if he was a shifter. The only people to ever see her as a Black Mamba was her brother, and that was an accident. She refused to even let her parents see her as a snake.
When Azure first shifted, she was afraid that her parents would be disappointed in her for becoming a snake shift. They had seemed so proud of Connor when he finally shifted, but he was a lion shift. Lions are noble creators. Snakes...Well, snakes aren't. Even though Azure wouldn't let her parents see her as a Black Mamba, her parents still made her shift every so often.
”Shifting's good for you,” her mother would say, her arms crossed. “You're a shifter, Azure! It's unnatural for you to not shift. Have some pride in yourself for once!”
I can do this. I can.
Azure swallowed down her fear and slithered right up to Cub. She reached out, nudging Cub gently. Azure looked up at him anxiously. She could only hope that Cub wouldn't see her as a monster.

x Theo sat. Unsure of what to do. He wished he’d gotten more information from Azure before she left. Like what she was planning to do, how long was she going to stay shifted and what would she do while she was. He was scared of walking in, not seeing on her and standing on her. That would be awful… what if he really hurt her. He decided staying put was the best option. If she wanted him she would come and get him. But would she do it in human or snake form? Theo thought how scary it must be for her. To have to shift when she was uncomfortable with it, and what’s more she knew that someone was sat expectantly waiting for her to return. Theo imagined how that would feel for him. Having to go and shift before he was used to it and having to go up to someone he barely knew. But hadn’t he done just that with Azure not too long ago. But that had been different, he’d felt guilty, and he knew his shift.
He sat staring off into space, not really thinking about anything. He didn’t want to worry too much about Azure. He couldn’t do anything now, it was something she had to do herself. All he could do was wait and encourage her when she got back. He hoped she would come back. He hoed she wouldn’t get scared and leave. How long should he wait? There was a small noise, barely audible, even to Theo’s exceptional ears. What was it? It wasn’t loud enough to make him turn and look, it sounded almost like wind through the leaves. A small gust of wind a second or two later ruffled his hair and dismissed any thoughts of the sound from his head.
He sat there, looking after Azure every so often, unaware he wasn’t alone. That was changed when he felt something nudge his side. Looking down, he saw a huge grey snake looking up at him. His reactions kicked in and he recoiled. Leaning back on his arms to get away. He stopped himself quickly though, returning to a seated posture. ”Azure… I’m so sorry. I didn’t mean to. It’s just… you surprised me. I told you I was a coward.” He couldn’t believe he’d actually done it again. He wanted to apologise so much more. But She couldn’t answer, so it was probably best that he didn’t.
He looked down at her smooth head. Reptiles weren’t famous for showing recognizable emotion, but Azure looked almost apprehensive. That made him feel worse. She counted on him to make her feel her shift was ok. And he had let her down. ”I really am sorry. But you did it. Was it bad? You… you look… beautiful.” He wasn’t sure how to end his sentence. He wanted to make her feel better but when he tried to speak his mind deserted him. He hoped she didn’t find it inappropriate.

x Sure enough, Cub recoiled when Azure touched him. Azure couldn't help but feel slightly disappointed, but the feeling faded quickly. It was just a reaction. Nothing more. Cub began to stammer, clearly embarrassed and ashamed of his reaction. Azure wanted to tell him that it was fine, she wasn't offended. It wasn't like she expected him to just be in awe of her shift or anything.
"I really am sorry. But you did it. Was it bad? You… you look… beautiful."
If Azure was in her human form, Azure would have smiled. He was a cute kid with a good heart. She wanted to reassure Cub that he wasn't a coward.
Azure flickered her tongue and nodded, not sure how else she should respond to the boy. It was awkward for her to communicate with him, that much was sure.
She nudged him again, trying to show him that she wasn't offended and he needn't apologize.
I did it! I..I shifted and...and I even approached Cub. That's improvement, right? Maybe I can overcome my fear of shifting after all!
Azure was overjoyed at the idea. Although, being a snake, her expression hardly changed.
At least Cub hadn't freaked out too much. He could have run away if he wanted to. Yet, he didn't. Cub stayed here, for her. She imagined that being confronted by a deadly snake wasn't exactly Cub's idea of fun.
He could have left when I went off to shift. I almost expected him to leave. I should have known better, and I feel bad for even thinking that. Cub is a good kid, a good friend. He even called me beautiful. Although that's not exactly a word I would use to describe a snake, and I'm a snake shifter myself. He meant well.
She hoped Cub wasn't feeling too badly about reacting the way he did. Azure lowered her head and scanned the area. Suddenly, she felt vulnerable. What if a teacher or a student were to pass by? Surely they'd spot her. Most shifters had excellent sight, better than the average human. Azure shuddered inwardly. Being seen by Cub was one thing, but being seen by a stranger was another.
Azure moved away from Cub. No one likes snakes. Tag: Tristy Trist! Notes: Azure stop acting so insecure <<

x Theo managed a smile. Things were still a little surreal. He was actually sat next to a snake. Sure, it was a shifter but still. Right next to him was a black mamba. A deadly snake. A creature that could kill him with almost no effort. But she wouldn’t, because she was still human. She was a nice human as far as Theo had seen, and he knew she would never hurt him. She shouldn’t be so insecure about her shift; it was really quite amazing. He found himself almost entranced by it. Her snake’s eyes looking into his. He thought he might be staring a little. She was responding to him. Nudging against him, maybe encouraging him? Telling him she was grateful? Theo didn’t know. He did know it was a positive gesture, and he was grateful for it. He gave an encouraging little smile.
Still looking into Azure’s eyes, Theo blinked, realizing he hadn’t done so in longer that usual. He was staring, there was no denying it. But the look in his eyes was one of amazement and gratefulness. She had actually shifted and come to see him, even though she surely knew he might have reacted badly. She barely knew him and yet she had shown him something she probably hadn’t shown many other people. And she had an amazing shift. Even though it scared him a little she looked sleek and agile and strong. Theo was slightly spellbound. Azure moved away from him, breaking the enchantment she had upon the young boy. Had he done something wrong? Maybe she didn’t like the way he was looking at her. Maybe it wasn’t his fault. Maybe she was still insecure.
Theo continued to look into Azure’s eyes. He tried to show that it was ok, that he was grateful. She really was amazing. She was a beautiful creature, though deadly. He had never seen anything like her before. A strange thought entered his head. ”Can I… touch…” he started, his voice fading to nothing quickly. He was scared to ask, it was weird. But he wanted to know what her skin felt like. He had never even seen a real snake before, let alone been close enough to touch one. He reached out his hand slowly. Not all the way, but close. He didn’t really know why. He hoped Azure wouldn’t think him too weird.
The boy imagined what he would do. How would he react if someone reached out to touch him? He would probably recoil and run away. If someone he barely knew reached out to him when he was in his animal form. But his animal form, while it was about the same size overall, didn’t have an effective way of defending itself. Theo could bite and scratch at someone if they tried anything but there was little he could really do. Azure on the other hand could kill with a bite. But would she be prepared to? Would she be able to rely on people being too scared to try and harm her or would she have to actually make a decision to attack. Theo didn’t think the older student was capable of it, meaning she was more likely to avoid letting people touch her.
Theo still held his hand out though, feeling silly and embarrassed. But if she didn’t want to she could just move further away or shake her head or something. A thought crossed his mind. His hand was stuck out there, exposed. Snakes move fast, and black mambas are especially venomous. He pushed it out o his mind though. Azure would never bite him. He couldn’t stop his hand from shaking a little though.

Strangely enough, Azure didn't feel intimidated when she looked straight into Cub's eyes. Azure wondered if Cub really thought that her shift was beautiful. After all, his shift was so much better than hers. He was a Fennec Fox! No one would ever cringe at the sight of him in his shifted form.
Then he asked if he could touch her. He sounded scared and unsure. He reached his hand out towards her. Azure could feel her snake instincts kick in suddenly, but she resisted. Cub was a friend. There was no reason to fear him. She nodded in response to Cub's question, trying to tell him that it was okay if he touched her. She leaned forward so that she brushed lightly against Cub's outstretched hand. She shivered as her skin touched that of a human's. Azure breathed slowly and was motionless, allowing the boy to touch her snake skin. She never did like how a snake's skin felt.
After a couple minutes Azure moved away from the boy. It was time for her to shift again. Back to a human, that is. She felt far too vulnerable where she was, and though she trusted Cub she feared that another shifter may see her. She was still fearful of what other people thought about her shift.
Azure looked at Cub, glad that he was there. He had helped her gain the confidence she needed to shift. Even though he had reacted badly at first to her shift, he accepted her for who she was. That alone made her feel more confident about her shift. Cub was the kind of friend Azure wanted in her life.
I hope I can be that kind of friend to Cub.
Azure motioned towards the bushes with her head, trying to tell Cub that she was going back to shift. She pressed her nose lightly against his sleeve in an effort to show her gratitude. She hoped that Cub wouldn't leave while she went away to shift.
With that, Azure turned and headed back to the undergrowth. She found her clothes easily. As she shifted, she could feel her bones expand. She began to feel her arms again. Then the legs. The feeling was uncomfortable, but it wasn't as painful as it was before. Azure sighed in relief when she was once again a human. She dressed quickly and headed back to where Cub was. It felt weird to walk again after having to slither along the ground.
“I shifted. I showed myself to a human.” Azure said to herself in amazement, as if she couldn't quite believe it. She stopped, laughing to herself. How good it felt to shift again! It wasn't all that bad, really. Not as bad as she thought.
Azure threw her arms into the air. “I did it!" yelled she, as loud as she possibly could. Now that she was no longer vulnerable as a snake, Azure felt more secure. Cub had accepted her. She had feared that he wouldn't have, but he did. Even when he saw her as a snake. When Azure saw Cub again on the lawn, she ran out to meet him.
“Hey Cub.” she said, slowing down as she approached him. She gave him a smile. “I can't believe it. I actually shifted! It was weird, but I did it!”

x Theo was amazed when Azure actually nodded, allowing him to touch her. Theo couldn’t remember anyone touching him when he was shifted. It would be weird. Yet here she was, letting him. It took him a second to react, and by then Azure had moved her head into contact with his hand. It was such a strange experience, the smooth scales beneath his fingers. He sort of stroked down her head and a little way along her long, thin body. It was unlike anything he had ever experienced before. He was enjoying it actually. He wanted to touch her because he had never touched a snake before, but it was actually quite a nice feeling. People associated snakes with evil and death, but Azure was like the opposite. She was quite comforting to Theo.
She moved away after a short while. Theo almost wanted her to stay there longer. He found her oddly enchanting. Theo had heard of snake charmers, well it was almost like the snake was charming him. He didn’t understand it. He loved that she trusted him enough to show herself to him, even though they had only just met. But still, she felt she could trust him. And even though she didn’t like shifting she had shifted when he encouraged her.
She touched his sleeve lightly. It was only a small touch, but the meaning behind it was much greater. Even though she didn’t want to shift, he had helped her to do it, and she was showing her gratitude. Theo gave a small smile in return. It meant a lot to him that she trusted him. Theo wondered what would have happened if he had just let her leave and not come out of hiding. She would have left and he would have gone back to playing around and she would still hate shifting. It made him feel good inside that he had changed her like that, even if it was just a little change.
The young boy watched as Azure left. He wondered if she was his friend now. He would like to call her a friend, even though he didn’t really know anything about her. He wondered if it was ok if he thought of her as his friend. He wondered if she thought of him that way. Or if she would by the time they parted. He hadn’t really made any friends since he arrived. It would be nice to have a friend.
The boy sat and waited for Azure to return. He turned to face away from the bushed she had headed towards. It didn’t feel right, shifting was something private and he felt as though he was looking in on it. He stayed sat that way for a while, the smile still on his face. Until he heard her shout. ‘I did it’. Yep, she did it alright. Theo’s smile widened. He had helped her. It made him happy that he had made her feel better about herself. It made up for earlier, when he had recoiled at her shift.
He turned, assuming she was done with shifting by now if she could talk again. He saw her running out, looking happy. Standing, he waited for her to reach him. She seemed so happy, it was infectious. ”Yeah, you were great. I don’t know why you were so unhappy about your shift. You really are quite beautiful.” He stopped. He had meant to say ‘were’ but… Well, maybe she wouldn’t pick up on it. ”You know I think it’s great that you shifted. It isn’t all that bad is it? You just need to practice a bit more, somewhere in private.” He smiled up at her. He was really happy. It was amazing how something so small could change his mood like this.
Theo wanted to do something to repay her trust in him. Yeah, he had helped her towards getting used to her shift, but in order to do that she had to trust him. He couldn’t really think of anything though… well, nothing that wouldn’t seem silly. ”You know... I would… shift for you if you wanted me to.” He had never felt so stupid as he did right now. What did that even mean? What he meant was that since she had trusted him enough to shift around him, he trusted her enough to shift too… but it might not sound anything like that to her. He hoped he wasn’t blushing, it felt like he was a little.
Theo searched desperately for something to change the subject to. For a while he came up with nothing. Why was he acting like an idiot all of a sudden? ”So… er… what is there to do here? I haven’t been here all that long, I haven’t seen everything yet.” Had he already talked about that? He didn’t think so, and if he had he’d forgotten all about it. Hopefully she wouldn’t think he was weird.
