x Theo had grown restless, he had spent too long indoors. Theo was usually very energetic, and needed to run around every once in a while. When he was home in England he and his friends would run around the neighborhood playing silly games. It was stupid and pointless but it was fun. Theo hadn’t made any friends like that here, at least not yet. He felt a little silly running around on his own, but he still had energy to get rid of. Since he had started shifting he had enjoyed spending time in his animal form. There were foxes in London, although none like the fennec Theo could become. One of the advantages of being a fox is that you are faster and more agile, not to mention smaller, so avoiding people is easier.
When he came to the academy Theo half expected people to spend a lot of time as animals, but he had been wrong, most people still thought is weird if you wandered around shifted. Still, Theo liked being a fox, and after a while had found a nice private area amongst trees and bushes where he could shift out of site of people. The greenery also shielded him from the majority of the lawns so that he could play around after he had shifted and no-one could see him. And so when he felt like running and being active he went there and became the animal within him.
That was what he had done today, it was an agreeable day, there were a fair few clouds in the sky but it was nice and warm. Theo had shifted and carefully made his way through the bushes to the secluded area of lawn. He ran around aimlessly for a minute or two, before seeing a butterfly flapping around a short way away. He had seen dogs and cats chasing butterflies before and had found it a little sill, they couldn’t possibly catch it and even if they wouldn’t really be able to do anything with it. Still, he thought he’d give it a go.
His small form bounced energetically towards the animal, yipping playfully, he would have laughed. The insect fluttered upward as Theo got near to it, and he jumped after it, not sure why, just trying to see if he could actually catch it. The butterfly flew a little way off, and Theo chased it, having more fun than he had in a while. He was brought back to earth by a sound. Theo’s fennec ears heard clearly the sound of someone coming his way, around the protective screen of trees and bushes. The fox noticed that while he had been playing he had wandered quite a way away from his shelter.
Panicking, Theo dashed towards the cover of the bushes, seeing someone out of the corner of his eye as he did so. He reached safety and lay as low as he could, trying not to be noticed. Surely the person had seen Theo just as clearly as he had seen them, if not clearer. The young boy wasn’t even sure why he had ran. He was just embarrassed really, he didn’t like being caught in his animal form, even though everyone here could shift. He felt vulnerable when shifted. Even though he was quicker and more agile he was weaker, and most people here could become much larger and more dangerous animals. The boy lay low, hoping he hadn’t been noticed and wondering what he would do if he had.

x Azure cut across the lawn, sitting down among the trees on the edge of it. She curled up against the tree and opened her book, flipping through its aging pages till she found the place where she left off. Today, there was hardly anyone at the Flamingo Lawns. Usually groups of students gathered on the lawns to study, talk, or to play games such as Frisbee. Azure closed her eyes, soaking in the warmth of the sun. She knew the good weather wouldn't last long. Suddenly, a noise disrupted her reading and she looked up in surprise.
She was positive that she had heard someone. Then, she heard a crack of a twig. Was someone watching her? Stalking her even? Azure shivered, remembering what had happened at the cafe just before the hurricane. If Everard wasn't there....
Azure shook her head. She was being unreasonable. She was safe here, on campus. What was she thinking? But then, she heard another sound. It came from behind her. She closed her book silently and rose slowly. She peeked around the tree, getting a brief glimpse of a creature darting by. A shifter?
She stepped out from behind the tree, and just as she did, the creature darted into a bush. Had she scared it? Azure clutched her book close to her and stepped forward. "Someone there?" she called out softly. "Hello?"
She walked forward, but with caution. Even if it was just a shifter, she wasn't sure if they were friendly. But perhaps they were scared of her. "I won't hurt you," said Azure. She paused. It might have been her imagination. After all, hardly anyone comes over here. Most students just sit on the lawn.
She shifted from one foot to another, unsure what she should do. She felt stupid, as if she was talking to herself. Besides, even if there was someone there before, they must be gone now. She bit her lower lip, feeling disappointed. Today she just felt so...lonely. It would have been nice to talk to someone. She just didn't feel that motivated to do much that day. It seemed like all her friends were busy, causing her to feel isolated.
"Um, okay. I guess...I'll....I'll just go now." She hesitated, as if hoping that someone was really there. But after a moment had passed and no one had appeared, she sighed and began to walk away.

x Theo lay quietly, he could just about see someone, moving towards him a little. He shrank back, not wanting to be seen. It didn’t really matter, seeing as everyone here could shift. But it had been a private thing for him for a year before he came here. He spent a whole year believing that he was the only person in the world who could shift. He backed up a little. His clothes lay in a pile beside him. The person spoke. It was a girl, she sounded like she was a few years older than him. She also sounded like she had only just caught sight of him and wasn’t sure if she’d actually seen him.
She was moving closer. Theo lay as flat as possible. He didn’t even need to worry, but it would look silly if he came out now. She was behaving like she would if he was an actual animal, trying not to scare him, moving forward cautiously. Her next words were unexpected. He hadn’t consciously thought about anyone hurting him, but there was the part of him that couldn’t help wondering. And it was nice to be reassured. Her voice was kind.
Peeking out through a tiny gap in the greenery, Theo caught a slight glimpse of the girl. She was definitely older than him and, though he couldn’t see her very well, she looked nice. She looked unsure, maybe she thought he had gone. Good, thought the fox. Maybe she would go and then he could get away. She spoke again, sounding doubtful of herself. Maybe she thought he was a real animal, or that he had gone. Still Theo stayed hidden. He felt a little bad, she looked a little disappointed, almost sad. He couldn’t see her very well but he could tell she was feeling let down.
As she turned to walk away Theo made a quick decision. He would let her know he was there, so she knew she hadn’t just imagined it or seen some local animal. He didn’t know why, he was usually shy. He looked towards his clothes for a minute. There wouldn’t be enough time to shift and get dressed, she would have gone too far away, it would be weird. He would have to go as he was. His small fennec form rose and trotted out of the cover of the trees. While he did this he wondered what he was doing, it wasn’t like him at all, but he felt bad letting her leave, hiding from her.
He moved just a little way away from his hiding place, looking up at the girl’s retreating back. It felt so strange, looking up from this angle. Theo had always been very secretive about his shifting, and letting someone know he was there wasn’t something he’d do. Still, there he stood. He called out, making a little half yipping, half whining noise. Not sure about what he was doing. He wanted to go back into the buches and hide again, but it was too late now.

x Azure was about to bend down to grab her book, which she had propped up against the tree when she heard a yip. Azure pivoted quickly, her heart racing as she scanned the area.
Sitting right where she had been standing moment ago was...a Fennec Fox. It was rather cute, and looked curious. So it was a shifter! It was unusual to see a shifter in their animal form, especially if you've never even met the shifter.
"Hi," said Azure, holding up her hand. She gave the small creature a smile. She sat down next to the tree, setting the book in her lap as faced the shifter.
"Uh...I'm sorry for intruding. I didn't know anyone was over here."
Looking at the Fennec Fox, Azure couldn't help but feel slightly jealous. Why couldn't her shift had been a Fennec Fox or something? Her shift was so....horrid. Awful. Azure felt as if she had been cursed when she found out what her shift was.
"So, you're a shifter then?" said Azure, talking more to herself than to the Fennec Fox, which of course couldn't answer her question. "It's a nice shift. If only I..." she added softly, but she stopped herself before she could go further. After all, she had no idea who she was really talking to. She didn't want to embarrass herself.
Now that she thought about it, it has been awhile since she last shifted. Azure shivered, remembering the feeling when she did shift. It was never pleasant for her. "I'm Azure, by the way." She felt that it was only polite that she gave the shifter her name. She ran her fingers over her book, lowering her eyes after she realized that she was staring at him...or her.
Part of her wished she could shift right at that moment, play in the grass and undergrowth like this shifter was doing. But she was afraid to do so. After all, no one likes to spot a snake outside of its cage. Tag: Trist, Trist, Trist! Notes: XD I loved your post. Songs: *brainfreeze*

x Theo thought he must be mental. He stood there, feeling exposed and embarrassed as the girl turned. She spun around quickly when he made a noise. He was a little worried for a second, and shrank back slightly. She was just surprised though, he had kinda snuck up on her. She seemed nice enough though, saying hello to him. She sat down, picking up a book. Maybe he was the one who had disturbed her. She must have just been coming over here to read in a quiet place.
She was apologizing. He wanted to say it wasn’t her fault and that she didn’t need to apologize. All he could do was make an odd little half-whining sound. He hoped she understood what he was saying. He gave a nod when she asked if he was a shifter. Well… not asked really, it was obvious. Theo supposed she was just making conversation. Theo did agree that being a fennec was really nice. So long as he didn’t run into any big, dangerous animals. He gave a confused look as the girl trailed off, or as much of a confused look as it’s possible for a fox to give. He took a few steps closer, wanting to ask about the rest of the sentence. Something about her shift.
The fox boy was a little concerned, approaching the girl slowly. He found that he was quite close to her, without realizing. It was strange. He had never gotten this close to a person when shifted. She introduced herself. Azure was an interesting name, quite nice too. She was staring. It made Theo uncomfortable. It wasn’t her fault though, he would have stared too if he’d met someone in their animal form. She seemed to realize she was staring though, and looked down, as though embarrassed.
He wanted to tell her it was ok, even though it did make him feel weird. He didn’t just want to run off though. Theo made a little jump to get her attention, then made a sort of nod towards the ground, almost like he was telling her to stay. He turned and ran off back towards the bushes, looking back half way to make sure she hadn’t wandered off. When he made it to the bushes he tried to find the most sheltered place possible where he would still have room after shifting. Hoping he was fully obscured from view, he began shifting. He had been shifting for over a year now, but it was still uncomfortable. It didn’t really hurt as such but it wasn’t nice. He felt his bones breaking and re-forming. It still creeped him out. Once he had finished he quickly reached for his clothes. It was awkward in such a small space but after a short while he managed to get himself dressed.
As he made his way to the edge of the bushes he began to feel nervous. He had never so openly shown himself when shifted. He had actually gone out and shown the private animal part of himself to her. And now he was human again… She would be able to recognize him in his human form, and it felt like she knew one of his secrets… and he didn’t even know her. But then, maybe it would show her he could be trusted. He wanted to ask her about her shifting, and why she had gone silent half way through her sentence. It didn’t sound like something she would talk to someone she didn’t know about. Still nervous, the boy left the safety of the bushes.
He probably looked a mess, his clothes were creased and his hair was all over the place. He stood awkwardly and sorted himself out, straightening his clothes and flattening his hair a little. Giving a little nervous smile he took a couple of tentative steps towards the girl. ”Hullo… I’m Cub… I’m sorry if I disturbed you. I was just… um… sort of playing.” he could feel himself blushing already, he felt so embarrassed. ”You didn’t have to apologize, and I’m sure you have a wonderful shift too.” He felt awkward… but maybe she would be ok with him.

x Azure gave a small laugh at the Fennec Fox when he, or she, jumped and then nodded. She could only assume that the Fennec Fox wanted her to stay where she was as he/she trotted off, most likely to shift. Azure always found it an inconvenience to shift back to a human.
Soon enough, a boy emerged from the bushes. He was younger than her, that much was clear. He seemed a little embarrassed and awkward, standing there.
"Cub, I like that name," voiced Azure once the boy was done speaking. She gave him a smile. "And there's nothing wrong with playing. If I had a shift like yours, I'd want to be running about in my animal form too."
"I don't think I've ever seen you around before. Then again, there are lots of students at the Academy. I was overwhelmed when I first arrived here several years ago. I couldn't believe how many shifters there were. Sorry if I was staring earlier, I didn't mean to. I hope I didn't make you uncomfortable."
She patted the ground next to her. "You can sit if you want. I was just reading myself."
She glanced at her book. "I have to read it for school. To be honest, it's quite boring. I enjoy reading as a pass time, but this book is just...dry. School books are usually like that, though. I wish we could read an interesting book for once in class."
Azure pushed away her hair, which had fallen in front of her face. That's one thing Azure hated about long hair, it was always in the way. Then again, she hated having short hair. Short hair never looked good on her.
"What grade are you in?" Azure couldn't imagine that this boy was older than fourteen or fifteen. He had to be thirteen at most. He was small, smaller than her at least, which fit his shift.
Azure rubbed her hands together, suddenly realizing how dry her hands were. Azure sighed inwardly, remembering that she had left her lotion in the dorm. If it was one thing Azure hated, it was dry skin. She never did understand how some people hated the feel of lotion. Without lotion, Azure was sure she would insane.

x The girl, Azure, seemed nice. Even though it must have been odd and probably awkward for her too. Theo gave one of his sheepish little smiles. ”Thank you, I like your name too, it sounds sort of… mysterious.” He wasn’t sure mysterious was the word he was looking or but then he wasn’t really sure what was. He meant that it was an unusual and interesting name that made him want to know more about her, but he wasn’t sure how to say it. Mysterious would do.
Theo was glad when she offered him a seat next to her. It made him feel less embarrassed about being caught as his shift. He smiled at Azure and made his way over to sit next to her. ”I’ve only been here a little while. I was amazed that there were so many shifters here too. It makes me kinda nervous sometimes… when there’s so many people here who can shift, and I don’t know what they can shift into.” He realized he might be showing himself as a bit of a coward.
”Don’t worry about it, you didn’t mean to, and I guess it was kinda odd seeing me like that.” In truth it had made him uncomfortable, but he couldn’t blame her for it. The young boy sat slowly next to Azure, hugging his knees as he often did.
He tilted his head a little to get a better look at the book. ”I like reading too, but school reading is different. If only we could read something good. I hope it’s alright though.” He looked up as her arm moved, brushing away her hair. She had an interesting face, it matched her name. His own hair was always a mess, he didn’t even try to sort it out any more. Maybe someone with more patience and skill could make it nice, but Theo didn’t really mind it being all over the place.
”I’m in eighth grade. It’s kinda strange here though, because there are loads of different classes aren’t there. So there could be people in my grade that I never really see. It’s different in England. What grade are you in?” He really couldn’t guess how old she was, just a couple of years older than him.
The younger boy looked up a little at Azure. He still felt a little awkward, and it was weird how she seemed a lot smaller, even though she was still bigger than him, when he had been shifted she was much bigger than him. It wasn’t something he had experienced before. It was weird. He thought how just a couple of minutes ago she could have picked him up with ease. He wondered what her shift was, and if it would be a big animal. ”So… do you mind me asking what your shift is? I mean, if you don’t like running around in your animal form…” He strailed off, not really sure of what more to say, hoping she wouldn’t mind.

x "I'm in eleventh grade. I never liked middle school that much. That was an...awkward time for me. I grew up in America. Arizona, to be specific. It's very hot there. I couldn't believe how humid it was when I first arrived here. Very different climates. It took some getting used to."
She paused, knowing that she couldn't avoid Cub's next question about her shift. Should she tell him? She wasn't the type of person to lie. Besides, she should be used to people asking her this type of question. Most people. upon meeting another shifter, asked what their shift was. It was like it was an outlandish question or anything. She'd just have to tell him.
"Well, don't freak out or anything....my shift isn't exactly cute, or fluffy. Or appealing on that matter. My shift is....a snake. A Black Mamba, actually." She shivered inwardly as she she talked. Shifting into a snake wasn't the most enjoyable thing. Azure hated the feel of a snake's skin. It was...so unpleasant.
Usually when she tells people what her shift is, she gets various reactions. Disgust, pity, even fear. There were too many people at Shifter Academy that judged a shifter based on their shift. She knew by experience.
Most reptilian shifts tended to be rough and tough, mean. Not every reptilian shift was like that, but unfortunately it was a stereotype that Azure just couldn't seem to shake off. Whenever she met new people and she told them her shift, they immediately assumed she was a troublemaker with a cold heart.
It didn't help she was a Martial Arts major, either. Although being a Black Mamba shift really helped her in that area.
Sure, Azure was tough. But not mean. She could be if she wanted to be....but that wasn't her. She usually never got angry, not unless someone or something really rubbed her the wrong way.
I can't believe I ended up with a snake shift. How did that happen? I don't even like snakes....
She tried to act normal, waiting as calmly as she could for Cub's response. It was okay if he was a little freaked out and shocked. That was normal. Tag: Trist, Trist! Notes: :3 Run Cub, run! Before the snake gets you~ (Kidding!...maybe) Songs: ;D

x Theo listened, his expression changing slightly as Azure spoke. First a slight frown of concern, changing quickly to convey his interest as she talked about where she came from. ” I hope school wasn’t too bad for you. And at least it’s over now, right. It’s a lot hotter here than in England. Arizona’s like desert-y right? I mean… you know. I just like the heat here.”
The boy looked up, wondering why Azure stopped. It was a normal question at this school, right? He had been asked what his shift was by practically everyone he’d met. He hoped she didn’t mind. Her response came, slowly. Telling him not to freak out… He gave a confused look. Then she told him.
He couldn’t help his reaction. He recoiled slightly, shifting away just a little. He was staring at her now. Black Mambas were very big and dangerous snakes. Easily big enough to kill him this instant, let alone when he was shifted. ”You’re a… snake. Snakes are… dangerous... and…” He stopped. What was he doing? It wasn’t her fault what her shift was. She had been nice to him so far. But then, didn’t snakes charm people, draw them in to strike… No, he was being stupid. She was a perfectly normal person just like him. Sure, she shared some characteristics with a snake, but then there were plenty of other attributes a snake had.
He hung his head a little. She must get this a lot. He should have understood. He over-reacted. He felt awful. ”I’m sorry. I didn’t mean… It’s just… big animals scare me. I… Just thought… I really am sorry. Forgive me? He couldn’t believe he had actually done that. She was sat there talking to him nicely, he had asked the question. And she had answered, even though she had a shift that could scare people. He felt like he had insulted her badly. He didn’t deserve to be forgiven.
He wanted to apologize again. He wanted to take back what he’d said. But you can’t just take it back. Once said it’s always there. She knew he was scared of her, or of what she could become. And it wasn’t her fault. He shouldn’t fear her for what she was. She probably wasn’t like that at all. She wasn’t just some animal. She probably wouldn’t ever dream of hurting or attacking anyone. Well, maybe she did the first time she shifted, but then Theo had done the same.
He hated himself for making an assumption about Azure because of her shift. He was probably very lucky, to have a nice shift. Sure it was small and vulnerable, but it was still nice. He imagined how he’d feel if he shifted into some reptile. People judging him as cold hearted and vicious. He would hate it. He looked up tentatively, not sure what to do. ”Do you hate me?”

x "Arizona is pretty hot, it never rains there. If it does, everyone freaks out," Azure said in reply to Cub's question.
When Cub learned what her shift was, he seemed a little freaked out. At first, Azure felt a little hurt. For once in her life, she was hoping that one person wouldn't totally flip when she told them her shift. She wished she knew another snake shift, or another reptilian shift at that. Someone to relate to.
He had a good reason to be scared. His shift was small. A Black Mamba could kill a Fennec Fox just by injecting its venom in it. Black Mambas were extremely venomous, and their bites can kill a human. Without anti-venom, the fatality rate is almost always 100%. Most people in Africa die from Black Mamba bites because they can't get medical help right away. Black Mamba's are one of the most dangerous and aggressive in all of Africa, and one of the most feared.
After voicing his surprise, Cub began to stammer an apology. Azure was shocked, though, when he asked if he hated her. No one, despite what they said about her, asked if she hated them.
Because since I'm a snake shift, I'm not supposed to have feelings right?
"You don't have to apologize. I've had worst reactions and things said about my shift. It comes with being a snake shift, a Black Mamba shift at that. It's something you have to get used to I guess. She frowned slightly at that.
Keep telling yourself that, Azure. You'll never get used to people's reactions about your shift.
Anyways, I don't hate you Cub, continued Azure. I'm not going to hate you because of one thing you said. Besides, you obviously didn't mean to hurt my feelings. It's all right."
She shifted slightly. "I wish I could change my shift, to be honest. I hate what I am. I haven't shifted in a long time. I'm still afraid of shifting. Even after all these years."

x Theo looked tentatively up into the older student’s eyes. He could tell he had upset her. He couldn’t believe he had reacted like that. It was completely unfair to her. You shouldn’t ever judge people solely on first impressions. When he had heard snake he immediately thought of soulless kiting, constricting, killing And hearing she was a black mamba, possibly the most dangerous snake in the world, had made him worry even more. But just because real snakes do those things it didn’t mean that was what Azure would be like. She had seemed very nice, exactly the opposite of what he was thinking. There were plenty of other reasons she had that animal as a shift.
She was telling him it was alright, she’d heard worse, she had to get used to it. But that still didn’t make it ok. That didn’t make what he’d done any better. That didn’t mean he should be forgiven. She said she didn’t hate him, but she should. He had treated her like an animal. ”I do have to apologize. I really shouldn’t have done that. I’m so sorry. You haven’t done anything to deserve it. I just… I’m scared. Of big animals, dangerous animals. I couldn’t help thinking that you could… kill me. But you wouldn’t hurt anyone, would you? Because you’re not an animal.” He felt like he should be doing more to make it up to her.
”You said it was okay because I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings. But I did, didn’t I. Hurt them I mean. It must be horrible to have people judge you like that. I’m glad you don’t hate me, but I still hate myself for doing that. I’ll make it up to you somehow, I promise.” He meant to keep that promise, though he didn’t know how.
Theo gave a concerned look at Azure when she said she hated being what she was. There were things about himself Theo didn’t like but he would never said he hated himself. He realized it must be hard for her. But maybe he could help. ”I really am very sorry. But I don’t think you should hate your shift. There are good qualities to being a snake shift too. What is your major?” He hoped that finding out about her major would tell him more about what she was like. Maybe then he could find the snake qualities she had.
Theo thought back to before he had come to the academy. He had hated shifting. But at the same time he had liked it. It was amazing and unique. And the more he did it the easier it was and the more he liked it. ”I don’t think you should hate your shift. You need to shift more, get used to it. I didn’t come to the academy until a year after I shifted so I had a lot of time to get used to it on my own. It gets easier the more you do it. You need to find a nice quiet place, like I did. I come her because almost no-one ever comes here and I can hide in those bushes.” He hoped he could help her to become more comfortable with her shifting. Then maybe he would forgive himself.

x ”I do have to apologize. I really shouldn’t have done that. I’m so sorry. You haven’t done anything to deserve it. I just… I’m scared. Of big animals, dangerous animals. I couldn’t help thinking that you could… kill me. But you wouldn’t hurt anyone, would you? Because you’re not an animal," said Cub.
"I....no. I'd never hurt anyone intentionally. Not unless I was in a situation where it would be my only choice to defend myself." Saying this reminded Azure of one time where her shift would have come in handy. It was a long time ago, when she was just a young child. She was playing in the park when some strange men had kidnapped her. It was before she learned to shift. Azure was never the same after the kidnap. In fact, it was motivation for her to do her best in martial arts. She wanted to protect herself, as well as others.
"I really am very sorry. But I don’t think you should hate your shift. There are good qualities to being a snake shift too. What is your major?” The boy seemed sincere in his apology, and Azure felt bad for making him sad. She had caused him to be upset. Azure wanted to tell him again that he needn't worry about hurting her feelings, but she felt that reassuring him wouldn't help. So, she instead answered his question.
"I'm a Martial Arts major, actually. Surprising, no?"
Cub began to talk about how Azure shouldn't hate her shift. It was sweet how he was trying to help her.... Who could ever like a snake shift? Yes, who could like a snake shift? No one likes snakes, especially Azure.
"I...I guess I should practice. I...I don't know though." She closed her eyes, trying to imagine herself shifting. It's been so long... "What....what if I can't shift back. Back to a human?" That was her worst fear. She's had trouble with it in the past, and it each time it happens it only scares her more.
Sometimes I feel more snake-like than human, especially after shifting. When I shift back to a human, I feel lost. I feel like I should shift back to a snake. What if I shift, and can't return to my human form?
"Do you shift often?" Azure asked Cub. "You seem like you're used to it. Is that why you're so comfortable shifting?" Maybe she should try shifting again. It could help. Anything to get over her fear.
Azure glanced over at Cub, almost a little jealous of him. He seemed so confident with shifting, at ease. Yet he's been a shifter for a short time, compared to Azure. Azure should feel ashamed of her fear of shifting. Shifting ran in her blood! It was irrational.
Or was it?

x Theo knew Azure would answer the way she did. Of course she wouldn’t hurt anyone. Most people here would never hurt anyone, even if their animal was normally dangerous. Their animal may be vicious but they had other characteristics that the person might share. They might be fast or strong or cunning like their animal, but not violent. Assuming that a person would be violent because their animal was wrong, but Theo couldn’t help doing it every time. He hated that he did it but couldn’t help getting scared. It was one of his worst character traits. If only he could change one thing about himself…
Theo still didn’t feel better. He had reacted completely unfairly. He wanted to do something to make it up to her, even if she said he was forgiven. He didn’t know what he could do though, she wouldn’t want him apologizing all day, and he was unsure how to help. Maybe if he managed to help her gain confidence in her shift. Nobody should hate who they were if they had done nothing wrong.
When he heard her major everything made a little more sense. A snake would be a good animal for martial arts. He suddenly felt worse for jumping to conclusions and being scared of her. ”Oh, so your snake traits are like you’re fast and agile and patient and stuff like that, right? Those are great traits to have.” He would like to have traits like she had. What did he have? He was active, but timid and cowardly. She had much better characteristics than he did. ”I wish I could have qualities like yours. I’m just a coward.” He said this partially because it was true and partially because he thought it might make her feel better about herself, like she should.
She seemed worried about shifting. She was scared that she wouldn’t be able to shift back. Theo had never thought of that. Sure, it hurt to shift at first, but you couldn’t ever get stuck as an animal… could you? ”I’ve never thought about that. I don’t think you can get stuck. It does hurt at first, or it did for me, but it gets more comfortable the more you do it. You should try it.” He hoped she could get used to shifting properly, maybe then she would be happier about what she was.
”I do shift quite often. I like it, it makes me feel free. When I first shifted I didn’t know anyone else could shift. My mother was a shifter, but she died before I shifted, when I was very young. My dad didn’t know about it.” Why was he telling her this? It was quite a private thing. It was because he felt he owed her. “My mum left a note explaining everything but I shifted earlier than she thought I would, so for about a year I knew nothing. But I shifted. It hurt, and I was scared, but I just wanted to experience it again, after the first time I mean.” Theo was amazed he had told her so much about himself. His past wasn’t something he liked talking about in depth, but maybe if she knew more about how he shifted she wouldn’t be afraid to. He hoped it would help.

Azure straightened when Cub told her that she had good qualities. No one had ever complimented her on her shift. Now that she thought about it, though, he did have a point. Being a snake shift sure did help when it came to Martial Arts. Agility and patience were both qualities Azure had. Her parents had always encouraged her to become a teacher, particularly a professor like her father, because she was always willing to work and she was patient. What surprised her more was that Cub even went on to say he wished he had good qualities like her.
"You aren't a coward, Cub. If you were, you would have run away as soon as you saw me. You wouldn't have shifted back to a human so that you could talk to me. You have good qualities. You're kind and thoughtful, and playful."
Azure felt sorry for Cub when he told her a little about his background. She was lucky enough to have both her parents alive still. Like Cub, her mother was also a shifter. As was her brother. Azure couldn't even imagine what it would be like not knowing that there were other shifters. What would she have done? Azure couldn't even imagine being the only shifter, and she didn't want to. The thought of being alone was too much.
"I'm so sorry about your mother. That must have been awful. My mother was a shifter as well, an alligator shift actually. My father isn't a shifter, although my brother is. My mother always wanted to move to Florida. She grew up there, and the climate there suits her shift well. Once I shifted though, she stopped asking my father about moving. I guess she decided it would be too hard on me."
Azure ran her hand over the grass, feeling the small blades tickle her skin. "It's easier for me to shift back home, but here I feel more self-conscious. I suppose I should try to shift...After my brother first shifted, he began shifting every day so that he got more comfortable with it. Now he has no problem shifting. Maybe if I do the same thing...it would help."
Azure bit her bottom lip. "Have you ever met someone with the same shift as yourself? I haven't. I don't even think there is another Black Mamba shift here at the school. I feel like if I met another snake shift, even if they weren't a Black Mamba shift, I would feel better about my shift. Have more confidence. But maybe I don't need to meet another snake shift to become more confident. Maybe I just need to practice shifting."
She tilted her chin towards the sky. For the first time she felt a flicker of hope. Perhaps this would be the year so overcame her fears.

x Theo gave a small smile, Azure was telling him he wasn’t a coward. He felt like a coward. He had still been scared when he first saw her, even though there was no reason for her to try and hurt him. Theo wasn’t often complimented on his good qualities, apart from playful. He knew that =D Although now he was getting older it could be considered childishness. ”I was scared when I first saw you. I ran and hid from you. But you’re just another student, you wouldn’t have done anything. I get scared easily.” He looked up into the older student’s eyes. He wasn’t quite sure how he should feel. It was an odd exchange, both paying each other compliments and shooting themselves down somewhat. ”thank you, for saying those things.” He meant for the compliments, but was stuck for a way to put it. He hoped he didn’t sound like too much of an idiot.
Theo looked away for a moment when she said she was sorry about his mother. It was one of those moments where you feel tears might come. He looked away though, and blinked slowly, clearing his eyes. He wasn’t going to start crying, not after all these years. He just didn’t like talking about his mother. He hadn’t had to for years. He had cried and talked with his dad about it after it had happened and had come to terms with it, but it was still a painful memory. Azure’s family sounded nice, almost perfect. She had two parents who cared about her and a brother who surely loved her too. Theo couldn’t help feeling just a little bit jealous. He wished he could have a family like hers.
Looking back at Azure, the boy smiled. ”Your family sounds wonderful, you must be very happy. Is your brother a student here? Or has he already graduated?” Theo wondered what his shift was, was he a reptile like the rest of the family. Theo would be quite scared to have an alligator shift for a mother… well, maybe he did, he didn’t know what his mother’s shift had been. He imagined her as a deer, he didn’t know why, it just seemed right. He wondered what qualities an alligator shift might have.
The look on the young student’s face turned to concern. Being away from home, especially with a family like hers, must be hard. Theo had needed a new start. Leaving a full and loving family must be tough. Theo wished he knew another snake shifter, someone to make Azure feel better about herself. ”I think your brother had the right idea, it’s not so bad once you get used to it. It’s still uncomfortable but it’s easier and you can concentrate more on being your animal.” It might not be good advice if Azure didn’t like her animal but it might help her. That was all Theo wanted to do right now, help Azure to become more comfortable with her shift and with herself. Maybe that would pay her back for his awful reaction.
Theo shook his head, he hadn’t met many others at all, or at least he hadn’t stopped to talk to many. He hadn’t mat any foxes at all, let alone any the same species as he was. Still, as hard as it would be to find a fox sifter, finding a snake would surely be harder. ”I’m sorry, I don’t know any other snake shifters. I think practicing would help most. Try to find somewhere you feel safe. That’s why I come here, it’s quiet and sheltered.”
Something about the way Azure was holding herself made Theo think that maybe he had helped, even if only a little. Anything he could do would be great. Nobody should dislike who they were, not if they were a perfectly nice person like Azure was. Theo wondered what would happen if someone’s personality changed after they had gotten their shift… could that change too?
