x The library was bigger than Emily had expected. She had spend a good portion of the day wandering around and finding out where things were. It was all very well being shown around a place but to really get to know it you had to make your own way, and get lost a few times. This was what had happened to her. She had taken a wrong turn at some point and ended up in the library. So she thought she would take this opportunity to take a look around. She was really excited to be out on her own for pretty much the first time in her life. Even though she would have her brother looking out for her and the staff making sure she was ok, she was still allowed to go pretty much anywhere and do pretty much anything she wanted. It was odd knowing that her parents were so many miles away.
Looking around at the books she thought there must be something on almost every subject in here. She wondered how she was going to find anything in here. She had wandered around for a short while before picking a book at random about photography and settling down in a chair to read. She hadn’t really planned on spending much time here but she was unsure of how to spend her afternoon and having a little read and look around the library seemed like a good way to go.
Emily was slightly nervous about being all alone. She didn’t know anyone here, and, being an extremely social person, not knowing people was bad. Of course there was her brother, but she couldn’t follow him around all the time like she had when they were kids. He had his own friends and hobbies here, and Emily didn’t want to bother him or get in the way or embarrass him in front of his friends. So she had decided to leave him alone and try to make some friends by herself. Another thing about being alone was that people here might not know what to do if something happened to her. Illness had been known to strike suddenly and without warning and, even though she had her bell to get people’s attention, they probably wouldn’t know what to do when they found her.
Emily was trying not to think about any of that though. Making friends wasn’t that hard, and she had been pretty much free from illness for a good while now, or at least as free as she could be. She was forever catching colds and other minor illnesses but she never let them bother her now. There was no point worrying about something if you can’t do anything about it. She could go out and make some friends but for now she was happy to sit and flick through her book. Who knows, maybe she would meet someone here.

"Your world was perfect till one day the world crashed in around you, now change is in the air and yet all you want and hope for is control..." Sage embraced her mother tight as tears streamed down her face "Mom please" she whimpered into her ear as she continued to hold her mother tight. "We talked about this hun, it will be ok, you'll be ok, you'll meet new people and learn control of your ability" Her mother trying to peel her daughter off of her. "Yeah but...." Sage tried to protest. "No buts, we talked about this and your sister will join you when she shifts, now where that smile?" Her mother the word of reason in her life, her mother lifts her chin and smiles. Sage smiles back and gives one more hug before going thru security at the airport, her mother, father and sister- Lee Anne watch on waving anytime she glaces over to them. Faintly smiling back as she looks at her ticket gate C10. On the plane she watches as the ground disappears below her wondering what this new school will be like, what the people will be like, 'shifting' yeah learn to control it . . . her thoughts continued to swirl inside of her head as she falls asleep on this leg of the trip, only to be awoken when they reach the connecting location. She glaces at her watch and notices she is late and has to run the rest of the way to catch the connector to Hawaii, she makes it just barely. She boards the plane exhausted and again falls asleep enroute. Sage reaches the school safely, calling her mother who is clearly choked up at her daughters voice yet happy to hear her voice. Her mom again reassures her and Sage now is left alone in her room to unpack. The first she goes for is a teddy bear, worn, missing an eye with a hot pink ribbon that she had tied around its neck two years ago, she smells it and embraces it before placing it on the shelf as she continues to unpack. Once done she goes to explore the campus, the warm air with hints of sea salt teasing her nose. The large trees that sway in the crisp breeze, and the green of the grass that is soft to the touch. 'REFRESHING!'Clutching her small blue book bag to her side she starts to wander inside the buildings and comes across the library. In she goes, the cold air conditioning sends a chill down her back that she quickly dismisses as she walks the stacks looking at the books neatly sitting there on the shelfs, the different colors, sizes and lettering of each reminds her of the many types of animals in the world. Sage's thoughts then turned to shifting, 'maybe they have something on the subject, they must?' Up and down she looked going the the alphabet carefully glazing each row for the subject. As she was going thru the stacks she comes across a small girl, fragile looking almost sickly looking but something in her face, in her eyes more like it, made Sage stop, her head cocking to one side to observe the little one. "Are you lost?" Sage asks the little girl before her, kneeing down to get to her level, looking her into her young grey blue eyes. x Emily wasn’t really paying attention to her book; she had just taken if for a quick look. Her mind had wandered; she was remembering leaving her parents to come here. She had been feeling so many emotions at once. She didn’t realise it at the time but she must have been acting really weirdly. She had started off nearly bursting with excitement. She couldn’t believe she was really going to be going to the school for shifters, she school her brother went to. She knew the day was going to come at some point but she was still ready to explode. Hiding just underneath the excitement had been fear. Fear of going into the unknown and leaving her parents behind.
Her excitement had won out for most of the day, but as they arrived at the airport she had started to feel a little afraid. She had become rather clingy as they moved through the airport, and as her excitement died down a little she began to feel rather fearful. When she finally had to leave her parents she had gone through a little cycle of emotions. At first she had clung to her mother and hesitated for a moment. Then she remembered getting rather teary and hugging both her parents more than once. She had finally gone back to excitement, almost running to her gate, stopping only to turn and give one last energetic wave.
The flight had been alright, and when she had arrived she had managed to overcome her emotions. When she met up with her brother again for the first time in so long, she had given him a hug and almost gotten a little teary again, this time with joy though. She hoped she hadn’t embarrassed him. At least none of his friends had been around, she wouldn’t like thinking that she had embarrassed him in front of them.
Someone talking to her brought her mind back to the present. She looked up to see a girl a bit older than her kneeling down beside her. It took a moment for her to realize what she had said. ”Oh, no I’m not lost. Thank you for the thought though. Do I look lost?” She said, noticing that she had let her arms lower so that the book lay in her lap. She had probably been staring off into space for a good few minutes. ”Well, I guess I kinda was lost, I mean I didn’t mean to end up here. Took a wrong turn. I should be able to find my way back though.” She accompanied this statement with a sheepish little smile. The girl was looking into Emily’s eyes. Emily looked back, her eyes meeting the girl’s pale blue ones. Emily’s eyes always showed her emotions, and right now they looked happy and thankful. This girl who didn’t even know her had asked if she needed help. It might have seemed like a small gesture to most people but to Emily it showed what a nice person they were.

"Your world was perfect till one day the world crashed in around you, now change is in the air and yet all you want and hope for is control..." "is that a little robbin on your shoulder?" Her small frame, pale skin and soft voice, Sage just wanted to pick her up and hug her but of course she didn't, she looked back at her as she spoke to her. ”Oh, no I’m not lost. Thank you for the thought though. Do I look lost?” the little one had asked followed up with ”Well, I guess I kinda was lost, I mean I didn’t mean to end up here. Took a wrong turn. I should be able to find my way back though.” the child had said with a small sheepish smile with a child like candor. "Well then we can't little ones getting lost now can we?"she told her as she stood holding out her hand then Sage asked "Are you a student here? As the pair walked Sage was still eying the stacks for 'shifters', every now and then pausing to make sure her little friend was ok as they went along. She suddenly stopped letting go of the little ones hand, quickly pulling a book from the shelf to her left, for a moment forgetting about the child and scanning thru the book. 'This is just what she was looking for! Sage was so happy but then remembered the little one, she looked at her, kneeling "I'm so sorry hun, I didn't mean to leave you behind." her eyes met the little ones "I just need to look at some of these books for a bit, I hope that is ok with you." she gave the little one a hug and went back to the book she pulled from the shelf but thoughts invaded her mind back to that day at the reef, her first shift ever. The day started out like any other, the sun high in the fair blue sky with puffy white clouds that dotted the canopy. The water cool and clear, perfect for scuba diving the reef that day. Sage, Lee-Anne and Amanda were all together as Amanda's parents lounged on the boat. The three of them exploring the reef with all the different types of fish, some small, some big, some fat and some thin, all wonderful to Sage if she could have this as her home she would be a fish for sure. Usually the three stuck together for safety but today for what ever reason Sage went off by herself to follow a sea snake that went into a small tunnel that Sage thought she would be able to get thru but she couldn't, half way thru she got stuck, wedged tight in the tunnel. She wiggled and struggled, yelled and nothing was working, she was running out of air, a sheer panic set in Sage and that's when it happened. Her bones began to break and reform causing pain to shoot thru Sage's body, she screamed but of course no one could hear her. Her body shifting from human form to that of an otter, now half the size of her human self she was able to swim away, her animal form in full control it just swims for it's life. Somehow she washes up hours later on the beach in her human form, unresponsive. Her next memory would be waking up in the hospital. After the flashback she stood motionless, the book falling out of her hands snapping her back to attention, she bends down to get the book, she turns to the little one knees and looks her in the eyes. "I need to get this book out and then maybe we can go get a bite to eat, my treat, ok?"TAG: Emily WORDS: 600 OTHER: Comments welcomed.

x Emily gave a little confused half smile when the older girl spoke. It was true that she was small and quite young but she never really considered herself a ‘little one’. The other girl couldn’t be more than a couple of years older than Emily was herself. Still, it was nice that she was offering to help her out. ”Thank you, but I’m sure I could have found my way back on my own. Not that I’m not grateful.” She took the other girls hand and slowly rose to her feet, nodding at the girls next question. ”Yup, I’m a student. I’ve just gotten here though. That’s why I’m lost. “ She said with a sheepish little smile, replacing her book as she did so.
Emily followed the older girl through the library. Her eyes wandered around all of the books lined up along the walls. It was amazing to think that there were thousands of other libraries like this one around the world and most of them would have many different books. Emily couldn’t start to imagine how many books there were in the world. Reading through this library alone would surely take a lifetime. Reading every book in the world, even just in one language, would be impossible.
Emily noticed that the other girl was scanning the shelves as well. She seemed to be looking for something. Emily was going to ask what she was looking for, but before she had the chance to ask the girl let go of her hand and stopped at a shelf, seeming to have found what she was looking for. The girl was kneeling again, though there really wasn’t much need. The other girl wasn’t much taller than Emily when standing. Maybe she just liked being at eye level, or didn’t want her to be looking up. Emily gave a smile in response to her comments. ”It’s ok. You didn’t even have to stop to help me, I don’t mind if you have a look at some books.” She was a little confused when the older girl gave her a hug before turning to the books, but it was nice to meet someone caring so quickly after arriving.
Emily hung about a little as her guide looked at a book. After a while though she noticed that the girl was standing completely still. The book fell from her hands. Emily gave a confused look. ”Are you ok?” she asked quietly. The other girl seemed to recover quickly and retrieve the book before turning and telling her she was going to check the book out. Emily wasn’t sure why she offered to get them something to eat, but she seemed to be nice. ”Oh… thank you. You really don’t have to though.” She hoped she wouldn’t offend the other girl by refusing, or at least not accepting. She couldn’t directly refuse when she had offered so nicely.

I don’t mind really but if, for example, I had wanted Emily to stay seated then you would have had to rewrite your post. I liked it though =) P.S. sorry, my muse has been a bit off lately.

"Your world was perfect till one day the world crashed in around you, now change is in the air and yet all you want and hope for is control..." "is that a little robbin on your shoulder?" Happy to hear that she wasn't the only 'new student' here at this huge school. "I'm new here too" Sage told her as she scanned the book she had had in her hands before having the flashblack, dropping the book and talking more with her new little friend. 'Are you ok?' she heard Emily ask, a faint smile came across her face as she looked at her "I am fine thank you for asking thou" Sage rested her hand on the little one's shoulder as reassure that she was fine. Before standing and telling her she was going to check the book out. Sage had asked if she wanted to get a bite to eat or two, there was some pause before Emily told her ”Oh… thank you. You really don’t have to though.” in a sweet polite voice. Eying the child she shifted her weight "oh come on please? I hate eating alone" Sage plead with her as she checked out the book, flipping thru it's pages as she stood there, her eyes trying to find anything on how to control ones shifting ability. Then a thought popped into her head, turning to Emily once more she asked her "If your a student here, do you ummm, well you know....." Sage's words got hung up with saying the word shift out loud, she never really yet thought of her self as a 'shifter'. There was an uneasy pause in her words, Sage looked like she wanted to hide or something to that, she looked around her to see if others were near them before whispering "... you know 'shift'?" There she said it and the world didn't come crashing in on them. Her eyes meeting the floor then eying the book in her hands as she held it up to Emily to see. "I can do this, but I can't control it, mom thinks because I had a near death experience, but I don't know anything about this." her voice was quivering as she spoke to Emily about shifting. Sage lack of confidence in her newly found ability was clear in her voice, she even looked scared just talking about the subject at hand. With all the books around her, with all the information locked within the pages of those books, she hoped that she would be able to find some way to control this shifting she was able to do. x Emily was glad to hear that this other girl was new too. She had felt a little alone. She knew that people shifted at different times so people would probably start at different times of the year, meaning that there wouldn’t be many new people at the school at once. But she was lucky enough to have met someone else new already, so she didn’t feel quite so lost and alone. ”Well that’s nice, we can be new together then. Though you must have been here a little while if you already know your way around.” She was pleased to hear that the other girl was ok, though it was weird that she just stopped like that. She was a very kind girl in Emily’s opinion. She nodded as the other girl said she was going to check the book out.
Emily had to admit she was a little hungry. But she couldn’t let this girl who she had only just met pay for their food. It wasn’t fair. She had offered to help her and feed her, and Emily hadn’t done anything for her yet. But if she didn’t want to eat alone, Emily supposed she could keep her company. ” Ok, we can go and get something to eat, but I’ll pay you back somehow.” Emily didn’t have much money. Her parents had given her some and would send more but she was under strict instructions to save it, and she wouldn’t be getting any more if she wasted it. But then food wasn’t really wasting it, was it.
The girl hadn’t expected her next question. She was a little confused at first, especially when the other girl paused. She seemed uncomfortable talking about whatever it was. When she finished Emily gave a little smile. She could understand why the girl had a hard time talking about it. It was a very private thing, Emily wasn’t used to talking to anyone that wasn’t related to her about it. She looked at the other girl in what she hoped was an understanding way. ”I can shift, yeah. My parents said I should try shifting whenever I can so that it doesn’t hurt and I can control it better.
Theo older girl looked down at the floor before slowly looking back to Emily, holding up the book. It was about shifting. The girl’s voice was shaky as she talked about shifting. Maybe she wasn’t as used to it as Emily was, she certainly seemed to lack confidence. ”Don’t worry about it. It will all become second nature to you before long, you’ll see. It takes a while to get used to but before you know it you’ll be shifting easily.” She accompanied her words with another smile.
It occurred to Emily that she didn’t know this girl’s name yet. It didn’t seem right to accept an offer of food from someone if you didn’t know their name. ”Oh, I’m sorry. I haven’t told you my name yet. I’m Emily. What’s yours?” She liked this girl already, and hoped they would become friends. It was always nice to get to know people.

"Your world was perfect till one day the world crashed in around you, now change is in the air and yet all you want and hope for is control..." "is that a little robbin on your shoulder?" ”Well that’s nice, we can be new together then. Though you must have been here a little while if you already know your way around.” Emily told her. Sage smiled "No not really, just a day or so and no I don't know my way around . . . yet" she unfolds a map of the campus as she lets out a small laugh. The subject turned to eating out and Emily said only if she could pay and Sage shook her head "No my little friend I asked you, I pay, if you want you can pay next time, ok?" She wasn't rich but she was sure she could cover lunch for the two of them. When she mentioned about shifting the little one looked confused for a moment ”Don’t worry about it. It will all become second nature to you before long, you’ll see. It takes a while to get used to but before you know it you’ll be shifting easily.” 'Shifting easily? yeah right' Sage thought to herself. She wondered how such a little one was so comfortable with shifting at such a young age? Sage has only had her shifting ability for about three months and was no where near comfortable with it, in fact it made her feel more like a freak then a human being. Sage gave a nervous smile to her "How did you become so knowledgeable about this at such a young age, my little one?" she cocked her head to the side ever so slightly looking her over and admiring her maturity at such a complex subject. Sage flipped thru the book, closed it and sighed 'This is not going to be easy' Sage again thought to herself before going to the check counter to check the book out. Once done checking the book about 'Shifting' out Emily told Sage her name. ”Oh, I’m sorry. I haven’t told you my name yet. I’m Emily. What’s yours?” she said with a warm smile. Sage smiled back to the little one "Sage, Sage Lynne Sargent, It's very nice to meet you Emily" She holds out her hand for the little one to shake. "Now then where would you like to eat lunch, Emily?' Sage asked as she stuffed the book into her book bag as she started to walk towards the door. x Emily let out a little slightly embarrassed smile as Sage took out a map of the campus. She should have thought of something like that instead of just wandering around. But getting lost could be fun. Right now was an example; if she hadn’t gotten lost she may have never gone into the library and never ran into this girl. And now she was going to have a meal with her. The girl wasn’t going to let Emily pay her back. Emily didn’t like accepting something for nothing. If it came to it she would have to take the older girl’s idea of paying next time.
Emily couldn’t say she was surprised to hear the girl asking about how she knew so much about shifting. Quite a lot of people here didn’t know that much. It still hurt when Emily shifted and she wasn’t always in full control of her shifted form but she knew it wouldn’t last. It was like learning to ride a bike or swimming. It was hard and scary at first and you aren’t really in control but the more you did it the easier it got. ”Oh, well everyone in my family is a shifter and I’m the last of us to shift so I have everything they told me about shifting. They told me it will get easier the more you do it. I still have trouble when shifting but I know it won’t be like that forever. And just think how great it will be when you’re in full control and you can be free as your animal.”
Emily smiled, remembering the times she had shifted. She had tried shifting whenever she could and she had even been allowed to fly a little way away outside, so long as she stayed in her parent’s sight. They still didn’t know how her physical condition was in animal form and they hadn’t wanted her to go too far and be unable to return or call for help. But now she was here she was looking forward to flying over the school and going where she wanted.
The young girl smiled when The girl told her name. ”Sage is a nice name. Your whole name sounds nice.” She looked at the hand offered to her for a second before smiling and shaking it lightly. Shaking hands wasn’t something she did often, and she didn’t really grip very firmly.
Emily followed sage as she headed for the door. She didn’t really know any places to eat here. She hadn’t had enough time to get to know the place. ”I don’t really know anywhere here. Does is show places to eat on the map?” she asked. Her brother had told her that there was a café somewhere on the island, maybe they could go there.

"Your world was perfect till one day the world crashed in around you, now change is in the air and yet all you want and hope for is control..." Sage was so relived when little Emily told her that the shifting should come easier with time. While a slight sigh of relief she smiled as she shook Emily’s hand softly. “Well now let’s see just where we can go.” Sage said as she looked at the map of the Academy grounds and surroundings. “There is the cafeteria here on campus or there is a café off campus but on the island, what’s your choice?” She handed the map to her to look it over as she sat on the ground and pulled out the book on shifting, and then a horrid thought came to her as she remembered the TV show ‘Animorphs’. Fear sent a cold chill down her back, her smile faded and the fear was clearly on her face, she laid the book in her lap and looked up at little Emily “Ahhh is there a time limit? I remember watching Animrphs when I was small and if they stayed in their animal form for more then 12 hours they could be permanently stuck in that form, is that the case with us?”Thinking about it was unsettling “Let’s go to the café off campus, I hope you don’t mind” she said as she got up and replaced the book into her book bag and looking over the map started to walk in the direction of the café, as they walked Sage’s thought’s ran away in her head, thinking about the TV show Animorphs, about her own shifting experience or lack of any way, the day of her first shift, the day her parents told her she was a shifter all flooded her head and the only thing that snapped her back was tripping over her own shoelace that had come undone, to the ground she went, the contents of her book bag scattering all over the side walk, she skinned both knees and her palms too were cut, a curse escaped her mouth. This day is just not going right for her at all and now she had cuts on her palms and knees, just great. She looked over at Emily and apologized for swearing, she didn’t mean to use such language in front of the small girl. Shaking off the dirt and gathering her things she turned over to tie her shoe and got up looking up and down to see who was looking at the situation, force of habit she couldn’t help it. Turning to the little one “Now then the café or bust!” she forced a smile as she started to walk again, this time more carefully and pushing the racing thoughts aside. TAG: Emily, Others Welcomed.
