Major: Photography
Major Explanation: People say a picture is worth a thousand words, Emily is one of those people. She believes nothing can quite describe a scene other than seeing it. For this reason she always carries a camera and takes pictures of everything interesting she sees. Looking at a picture can bring back so many memories, and that’s what She loves. She wants to be able to look back on her life years from now and have all those memories come flooding back. Another reason Emily loves photography is that she simply loves capturing a scene. Whether it be one of beauty, or humor or sadness. She loves observing the details and feeling close to the scene. Robins also focus on the details of the scene around them. Their lives depend on finding just the right spot to get food, or just the right twig for the nest. Like most birds they have fairly good eyesight, allowing them to quickly pick out details.

Overall: [400 words minimum]
Emily Holmes isn’t all that complicated. She is easy to please and takes great pleasure in helping others, even though she sometimes requires help herself. She is always optimistic and usually cheerful. Her reasoning is that even a sad day can be at least slightly improved by a positive, cheery attitude. Being sad is a waste of time for her, especially if there’s nothing you can do about it. She does still get sad, and scared and other such negative emotions, but she tries not to show them, not wanting to ruin other people’s mood. If she sees someone else who is unhappy she tries her best to cheer them up. She is extremely polite and courteous and will leave someone alone if they ask, or spend tie with them, or do almost anything, especially for the people she loves. Some people say she trusts people way too easily, and it would probably be easy to manipulate her if you wanted too, but most people who have tried have been inadvertently guilted to the point where they can’t manipulate her. She loves meeting new people, no matter what they’re like, and tried brightening up their lives. She believes that there are no bad people, just people who do bad things. And everyone can change. The only real way to have Emily dislike you is if you are cruel to people or Animals. Then she will, not hate you, but hate your actions and try to make you change. She is a pacifist and dislikes any kind of violence.
Emily’s physical condition has meant that she has come close to death several times and, as such, isn’t all that frightened by it. She knows pain and suffering, but she also knows it’s never permanent. No-one really knows what happens when you die anyway, it would be interesting to find out. That being said, she hates it when others die, whether animal or human. She has amazing compassion for all life. She also possesses a remarkably strong will, sometimes managing to keep herself going or finish something when she shouldn’t physically be able too.
In her free time she likes nothing more than taking pictures, or sitting round and watching the world go by. She likes to just sit and watch, and let her mind wander. There’s no real reason for this, she just finds it enjoyable. Her mind wanders too and from different topics, sometimes thinking about the people, sometimes wondering what it’d be like to live all her life in her animal form, so some other random topic. Another favorite pastime is spending time with people. No matter what they’re doing things are more fun if you’re with someone else. She spends a lot of time meeting new people and getting to know them. She likes reading quite a lot too, and often spend her evenings wither reading a book or looking through her photos. Emily takes pictures of almost anything, and sorts and stores them on her computer and an external memory device. If Emily asks to take your picture it usually means you’ve been accepted as a friend.
Emily is not without her flaws though, the most common of which is that she doesn’t know when to stop. She can come across as annoying when she’s trying to be friendly and some more polite people won’t tell her to back off. She’s also slightly lost and unsure of herself at times, such as when performing tasks for others. She also forgets about caring for herself sometimes, becoming preoccupied with other people. This can become quite a problem when she is unwell and needs to look after herself. She also finds it hard to say no to people, which can lead to her agreeing to do things she probably shouldn’t. She won’t do anything seriously wrong, and she won’t agree to smoke or anything like that, she isn’t senseless but sometimes doesn’t seem to have enough common sense for her own good. Emily does have a slightly distorted view of the world. She knows it isn’t all happiness and beauty but believes there is potential for it. She also believes in the goodness of people and animals and some might mistake her slightly naive attitude for bravery in some situations. Not to say she isn’t brave, but often it’s just that she doesn’t see the danger. She is sometimes shocked and surprised about how things turn out, even though most people would have seen it coming.

Appearance: [400 words minimum]
Emily is small and thin. She is 5’ tall and has a small, delicate frame with little in the way of muscle. She looks quite frail and a little sickly, which she is. Her skin is pale and her body appears weak, which is true. Still being young she has a long way to develop, though she doesn’t really feel that she needs to change much. When people joke about her height she says short is awesome and the higher altitude messes with other people’s heads.
Emily has long, light brown hair that falls down almost to her lower back. When straightened it reaches down past her elbows but she usually lets it stay a little wavy. Not liking to do an awful lot with it, she usually just lets it fall down her back and occasionally over her shoulders. She has her ears pierced and wears small studs or rings usually. Her face is roundish and friendly. Her lips are pale but her mouth is almost always smiling. Her eyes are grey-blue and always seem to look cheerful and active. Overall her face gives an impression of childish innocence.
Emily doesn’t really have a ‘style’. She wears a wide variety of clothes, preferring light or bright colors. She doesn’t really have any particular type of clothing that she likes best either, wearing anything from jeans to dresses and t-shirts to blouses. She does have a soft spot for things with animals on them or quotes that she likes or finds amusing. Her favorite at the moment is a tee that reads ‘why do people kill people to show that killing people is wrong?’ She has a small pair of cat ears… not real ones obviously, but a fake set on a headband. She thinks they’re cute and has fun putting them on her brother when he isn’t looking. She is quite often seen in a hat and owns a wide variety, including one that looks like a monkey head and a big sun hat she wears to keep the sun off her, as she urns easily and is vulnerable to heat stroke. She also has a bicycle bell attached to a strap around her wrist for attracting attention if she ever runs into trouble. Along with this she carries a satchel containing medical supplies for a variety of situations.
When she becomes a Robin she shrinks to just over 13cm tall. Her feathers are brown on her back and grey on her underbelly, lightening to white. Near her tail and the tips of her wings are small streaks of black. Her face and breast are a vibrant orange. Her beak and legs are black. Her eyes become all black but still retain that gleam her human eyes had. Like her Human form, Robin Emily appears quite frail, but is able to be much more active.

...history
Parents: Father – Eric Holmes, Mother – Sarah Holmes
Siblings: Andrew Holmes
[400 words minimum]
Emily Holmes was the second child of Eric and Sarah, three years after thief first child. She was born with an immune deficiency, meaning that she was susceptible to illness. Her first few years of live were nearly her last. She managed to survive meningitis when less than a year old, a few months after she turned a ear old she got the flu. She barely survived that and less than a year later she caught pneumonia. Though she recovered from this too, and returned home the day before her third birthday, she was left with a severely weakened body as a result of her illnesses. She had problems with her breathing and some of her other organs were in some way weakened or damaged, if not directly then indirectly. Either way, her parents took precautions against her getting sick again. They moved away from their city home in Madison, Wisconsin and to the country.
The family was still within reach of the city, they just felt they had to keep their daughter away from the city, away from the pollution and people. They may have been overprotective, but they didn’t think they could bear to lose a child. Emily’s brother, Andrew, was obviously feeling a little neglected, with his parents spending so much time with their daughter and then moving him away from his friends. He was too young to understand how serious things were. However, Andrew soon became Emily’s favorite person. She idolized him and loved to spend time with him. Throughout her life Emily was often back in hospital for treatment, usually for something that a normal person would just shrug off. She was never very active and didn’t get out much. She went to school and had friends but wasn’t allowed off on her own. She was used to being unwell and from a young age started blaming it on herself. Though she grew to realize that it wasn’t her fault she still felt as though she should apologize to everyone when she became sick. She had always loved pictures and was given her first camera at only 6 years old. Throughout the years the camera had changed but she kept almost all of the pictures she’s ever taken. She used to print them out but after a couple of years was given a laptop to store her pictures on. She was trusted with technology from a young age because she was always really careful and hated breaking anything.
When she was seven years old she came close to death again. It was summer and Emily and her family had gone to a park for a picnic. Andrew had just bought a new soccer ball and wanted to go and play with it. They were sat on the side of a hill overlooking a pond, and Andrew walked down to the other side and to a flat field. Emily wanted to go and watch her brother, and was allowed to provided she stayed near the top of the hill and Andrew kept an eye on her. Andrew was soon off having fun and after a while Emily began to feel too hot. Seeing a tree a little way off down the hill she headed over to sit in it’s shade. Just after she reached the shade she began to feel faint and weak, then collapsed. She didn’t know how long she lay there, barely conscious, before she was found by her family and rushed to hospital. She had heat stroke and, again, nearly died. When she recovered and got home she found out her brother had been severely punished for not keeping an eye on her. She apologized to everyone for going off alone and especially to her brother for getting him in trouble. It was at this point that she was given her bell so that she could alert people if she was in trouble with little effort.
Eric Holmes was a shifter and could become a grizzly bear. He had told his wife about his shifting and that they could expect their kids to shift at some point. So when Andrew shifted at 14 years old the whole family was ready for it. He didn’t manage to seriously hurt anyone, though he did try attacking his father. And he was sent to the academy a short while later. Emily didn’t really know what to do without her big brother, and spend an increasing amount of time looking at her pictures. Just a few years later, though, she shifted herself, becoming a Robin. She had just been sat at home when she felt an odd pain. She shouted her parents, thinking there was something wrong with her again. Before long though, she started shrinking, thinking her bones break and reform. She imagines this must be how it felt to be hit by a car, only in slow motion. When she had finished changing she panicked, taking off and flying around the room in terror. Before long though, she realized what had happened and began to enjoy herself. She changed back and immediately asked her parents when she could go to the academy. Her parents arranged it, ensuring first that they had the capability to look after her. It was hard for her to leave her parents, and even harder for her parents to let her go. But she did go, and looked forward more than ever to see her brother again.
...connecting human to animal
[One Paragraph Minimum (Can be point form)]
Emily, like the Robin, loves nature. A robin’s survival depends on closely observing it’s environment and Emily loves looking at nature. English robins are social birds that live close to people and animals to better survive and in some cases help. Robins are the gardener’s friend as they kill insects that could ruin their garden. Emily loves being around other people and helping them if she can, even if she just brightens their day a little it’s a success. Robins have good eyesight and can take in a detailed scene quickly; Emily has the same keen sight. Both the Robin and Emily seem weak and frail but have a kind of inner strength and can survive against all odds.

Airplanes weren’t so bad. Emily had heard so many stories about how bad they were, but so far everything was great. She got to sit next to a window and there was a nice member of the cabin crew who made sure she had everything she needed. The man sat next to her had been asleep pretty much since they took off so she hadn’t had anyone to talk to. She had spent some time looking out of the window but they were over the ocean now so there was nothing really to look at. She had her camera with her, and a memory card with a few old photos on it.
She put the card into her camera and began to flick through the pictures. It was a random selection she had copied from the laptop. There was a smile on her face as she looked at the images. Old pictures from her school, her old friends, her family. One of her brother wearing a Goofy hat from their family trip to Disney world. She remembered that day well, it had been boiling hot and so after they had gotten off the log flume her dad had gone to get ice cream and Andrew had dropped his the minute he’d gotten it. So their dad had to wait in the long queue and get another one.
”Can I get you anything to drink, sweetie?” came a voice from Emily’s left. Looking up, the girl saw the stewardess who had been looking after her. ”Yes please, could I have an orange juice?” She responded, smiling up brightly. ”Sure thing chick,” Came the stewardesses reply. She reached into her cart and fished out a juice carton, handing it to him. ”There you go, enjoy.” Emily accepted the drink happily. ”Thank you.” As the stewardess moved on Emily took another look out of the window, seeing something disturbing the waves all those miles below. Maybe it was a whale, she thought, or a dolphin.
Emily wondered what it would be like to be a dolphin. It must be fun. Maybe it was better to swim as a dolphin than to fly as a bird. Who knows, maybe she would meet someone at the academy who could shift into a dolphin and they could tell her what it was like. Maybe she would meet some other people with really interesting animals. Maybe something like a lion, or a snake, or maybe something big and sweet like a manatee. She was so excited she thought she would burst.
