But that don't mean that patience
Takes this motion lying down
I'll stand and fight until the day
They put me in the ground.
It was hot. Really hot, to be honest. The sun had decided to be exceedingly cruel on the planet it kept alive, finding some entertainment in the long job of rising and setting everyday. Crystal gave a fruitless effort of trying to fan herself with her hand. Her only consolation is that she hardly sweated, so the only trouble was the suffocating heat. But that was trouble enough. Being hot was high on the do not's of Crystal's life, right behind fire. They kind of went together, yes? But it didn't matter when she hated both. That was the beautiful thing about disliking things.
Even though the rays of the sun didn't penetrate the dark of her dorm room, the heat made the room stuffy and claustrophobic. Crystal tapped her fingers against her stomach as she lay stretched out across her bed, eyes closed, perfectly serene. Well, she was perfectly serene until the day had come to it's full temperature. Her room mates had gone, who knows where, and she was alone. The silence was both comforting and obnoxious. Muffled sounds from the hallway and the campus beyond the window seeped in every now and then, breaking Crystal's calm and begging her to join. Despite her ability to ignore the sounds, the heat, that cursed heat, was constantly laughing at her and enjoying the squirms and uncomfortable shifting of her hair as it stuck to her neck. Finally, she sat up, frustrated. She stalked over to the window and opened it. The breeze was warm, but at least it was a breeze. But the smell of outside tickled her nose, teasing her senses. With a deep inhale, she turned and grabbed some shoes, decidedly walking out the door.
But as she got outside the dorms, she stopped and looked around. Now what? Glancing in the direction that lead off campus, she wasn't pulled by the thought of the forest, as much as she loved it, or the beach, no matter how refreshing the scary water would be. But as she looked around the campus, nothing pulled her either. Not the library, the cafeteria, nothing. The gym looked promising, but she didn't want to go back to that stuffy box that was called a dorm to get her stuff. Flip-flops weren't the best for track running. She rocked back and forth on her heels, hands stuffed in her shorts pockets. Well, she thought as she glanced towards a large tree on the lawn, shade it is.
Wandering over to the tree, she sat down with a thud. Sounds of her fellow students enjoying the day surrounded her. She had no wish to join them, for sitting down by herself, under the surprisingly cool shade, was welcoming. Leaning her head against the bark, she got a view of the canopy of leaves above her. It gave her a flashback of her past.
It was a cloudy day. The kids were playing their favorite game of 'Spies'. They would hide and try to find the other kids before they got spotted themselves. Crystal's favorite place was up the big oak tree in the back. Her brother ran behind the tree, looking around, but never looking up. Her shoulder shook in silent laughter. Suddenly, she dropped out of the tree, her thumb and forefinger in the form of a gun. "Bam, bam! You're dead!" she yells, as her brother dramatically falls to the ground.
With her eyes closed, she smiled to herself.
