Overall: [400 words minimum]
Crystal is a little, interesting ball of energy. As a child, she was moved around a lot, and had a lot of harsh experiences in her life, and that is what contributed to who she is today.
Basic: happy. Crystal can be a very happy person. She can smile and be your friend, maybe even put a little bounce in her step. She enjoys meeting new people, though she often doesn't go out of her way to find them, and is always wary of them when they first approach. But it's fun. But whenever she feels threatened, or something goes wrong, she automatically goes into the defensive, pulls back from the world and doesn't come out until it's safe. She is a strong fighter, willing to fight for her life and for her happiness. She avoids fighting when she can, one: because she hates losing, and she usually wants time to size up her opponent, and two: because she hates the evil, the devil that comes out of her when she fights. We'll get to that later.
Basic: sad. Though it doesn't come around much, Crystal can feel a little sad. Her sadness is sympathy, sad when others are sad. She often doesn't get sad herself, because she thinks it is a worthless emotion. Those who wallow around in self pity need to stop wasting their life away and move on. She could've cried every time she got moved as a child, but she figured it was a waste of time and never did. Sometimes, it makes her look hard, unforgiving and unwilling to feel any emotion. But she does, somewhere deep in her soul, but she refuses to give into it.
Basic: temper. Ah, yes, the anger. The anger that comes out when something goes really long. All her life, Crystal has been trying to find a way to control her anger. But it's impossible. There is no way to stop the rage that comes out whenever something bad happens, or when somebody does something extremely wrong. It pushes it's way forward, taking hold of her heart and squeezing it terribly so she succumbs to the awful emotion. No matter how hard she may try, it will never go away.
Ok, the fighting. After the horrible experience as a child, Crystal got into fighting. She hated being defenseless, and she wanted to be more than just a little girl with a tough attitude. She enjoys fighting, hitting things is fun when you're angry. But sometimes she gets scared, because if she goes too far, something in her takes over. An animal instinct, maybe, but something takes over and she becomes fierce. Even if the opponent surrenders, she can't help but kick them when they're down, and gloat. But when it's over, a deep self-loathing comes over her, washing over her like a wave and forcing her to drown in it. That is why she avoids intense fighting. But play fights, lesson fights, even verbal fights, those she loves.
Crystal is very territorial, and protective. Whether it is touching her stuff or prying into her private life, it isn't very smart to do it to Crystal. That's where her temper and fighting instincts come in. And when she likes a person, and gets attached to them, she is very protective of them. Tries to let nothing harm them. And she is very protective of herself, which is very easy to believe. Sad thing, though, is that if it was to save a friend or herself, she would save herself.
The minor details also help build Crystal. She loves to run, to be fast. She loves meat, and she eats it constantly. She will most likely be the youngest person to have a heart attack. Crystal matured at a very young age (she had to, to take care of herself), and she often looks down on those who still act very childish, who think it funny to goof around just to 'look cool'. She loves the simple things like winter, reading, chocolate, etc.

Appearance: [400 words minimum]
If Crystal thinks she's cute, she won't admit it. She is far from vain. But she is attractive . . . in a harsh sort of way. Long, light brown hair falls in soft waves down her head, with swooped bangs occupying her forehead. Though she cares about her hair a lot, she really doesn't spend that much time on it in the morning. A shower, blow dry and run a brush for it. She long ago decided to just go with what it naturally was, and it turned out to be pretty darn cute. Her green eyes are almost almond shape, and everybody says they are literally the window to her soul. Crystal can have a hard face, no body movements, but you can always tell what she is feeling by her eyes. The complexity of them, though, is sometimes hard to decipher. She has sharp cheekbones, angling down to a cookie cutter nose and full lips. Crystal wouldn't call herself tan, but not exactly pale either. And she doesn't care either way.
Crystal's overall build is slight. She only stands at about 5'4", so she is very small. But don't judge a book by it's cover. Crystal has muscles, but not the bulgy kind. She is thin and wiry, but strong all the same. She is also full of energy, but that is a given. Her fashion sense isn't grand. She likes simple clothes, mostly white and black, because she doesn't like the effort it takes to put together a good outfit. She prefers jeans and a t-shirt, and shorts are good when she's hot. For workouts and stuff, she hates getting all geared up. Sports shorts and a tank top; hair in a ponytail, wraps on the hands. Bare feet work fine when you're just playing around. So nothing had to be complex in Crystal's world.
Now the animal. All ermines are small, and she only weighs ten ounces. The head an body are about seven inches long with a four inch tail. When curled up, the Ermine could probably fit in an adult hand. But, as Crystal, the Ermine should not be judged by it's small body. The Ermine's paws are equipped with sharp claws, and two rows of sharp teeth fill it's mouth. The face is in a triangular shape, with it's nose at the point. The nose is a dark brown, almost black, and the eyes are a dark, dark green, with that almost looking black also. In the spring, summer and fall, the Ermine's coat is a chocolate brown with a white underbelly and a the tale tipped in black. But in the winter, when things go white, so does the Ermine. It sheds the brown and goes completely white, except the tail is still tipped in black. The change in coat helps to hunt as the surroundings change.

[400 words minimum]
Crystal is a orphan. When she was only one week old, she was found on the steps of a child care services building with with a note that said: Her name is Crystal, and tell her I'm sorry. Crystal was obviously premature. At 4 lbs 11 oz, it was amazing she survived at such a birth. But she was as healthy and kicking as any other on-time baby. So that is how Crystal was thrown into the orphan cycle.
She was given over to a decent orphanage to be raised and cared after. It was a fairly large one, so even though she was brought up and cared for, she didn't get all the attention that should've been given to her, just out of love. So by the age of four, Crystal had matured really quickly and learned to care for herself. She was even helping the owner of the orphanage help the other kids too. The little girl was actually starting to like being there, to help people, and she had a lot of friends there. But, as luck would have it, she got adopted at age five.
The family that took her in was a pretty nice family, the parents one of those couples who couldn't conceive, so they adopted. (Karol and Jonathon was their names.) Crystal was the youngest and last of six adopted children, the oldest one being an eighteen-year-old boy. She wasn't happy or sad in that family. She went to school, and made friends. All six children mingled, but none of them really clicked. The closest 'sibling' of Crystal's was a fifteen-year-old, a girl named Sarah. Sarah loved talking to Crystal and braiding her hair, and they soon became close. But her whole experience changed one day when she had to run an errand at six-years-old.
The eighteen-year-old boy, named Ryan, had turned nineteen a few weeks ago, but still hadn't figured out what to do with his life. So he stayed at home. One day, her mother asked her to take some papers to another lady across the neighborhood. Easy enough. So she took them, and on the way back she decided to take a shortcut through the park, because it was getting late. As she was walking through the park, she saw some figures over by the jungle gym. She was going to avoid them, but she saw it was Ryan and his friend, so she went to go say hi. Mistake. It went like so:
Crystal bounces up to the jungle gym. "Hi Ryan, Jared, where--" Pause. "What's that in your hand?" Deep breath. "Is that a cigarette? And what? beer?" / Ryan stands up, flicking the cigarette to the wood chips below. "Just go home Crystal, you didn't see anything." / Crystal is really confused. Ryan is usually really nice to her, playing games and getting stuff down she couldn't reach. "But mom and dad always told us that stuff is bad for us and---" A hand is suddenly gripping her throat, and her ears ring as she is pushed up against a slide. "Nobody cares what you think, perfect Crystal." The hand falls away, and Crystal goes to the ground. A sudden foot is put on her chest. The foot is so large it stretches the full length of her torso. In vain she tries to push it off, but soon sees it's worthless and stops. Ryan leans down, inches from her face, the alcohol and smoke on his breath almost unbearable. "Run home, Crystal, run and tell 'mommy and daddy'. Then see what happens next." With a harsh laugh he lets her go, and Jared joins in. Crystal lay there for a minuted, stunned, before getting up and running all the way back home, their laughter still ringing in her ears. She runs inside, wiping embarrassed tears from her face. She would have thought it a horrible nightmare (Ryan is not like that, she keeps trying to tell herself), but the bruise on her chest and neck tell otherwise.
The next day, Crystal ran away.
But nothing ever goes as planned. She was caught by some wandering cops and, when she refused to tell them anything about her past life, they threw her into child care services. She lied about her last name and all about her information to avoid being sent back. And it work. She was thrown in an orphanage again, this time a less friendly one. She was in that one for a year, and at age seven she was adopted into by a couple with no children at all.
Life got better. She got love and adoration from her new parents. But Crystal was never the same. She was embarrassed and hurt, and she would never forget that night and that horrible laughter. One day, Sharon--the new mother--asked Crystal what she wanted most. Only thinking for a few seconds, Crystal said, "To take Martial Arts classes." Sharon was a little taken aback, but she respected Crystal's wishes and soon enrolled her in some classes. Crystal's been in love ever since. Fighting has given her pleasure, and she often dreams of what she would have done back at that horrible day (even though she was still only half of their size).
One day, at age thirteen, she faced a similar dilemma. Actually, almost exactly the same. She was walking home through a park one day, and she was stopped by guys, probably in their late twenties. They asked where she was going and if she had any money. It was obvious they had been drinking. She actually wanted to smile. She had been wanting to test some of her moves in actual situations. But before anything could happen, there was this fire in her chest. Crystal gasped and put a hand to her heart. It felt like her whole heart was on fire, and it was moving slowly to the rest of her body. It forced her on all fours. She wasn't even thinking about the two guys standing there, staring at her like she was some sort of freak. Sharp pains were starting in her hands in her feet, her head throbbing. Crystal closed her eyes. When she opened them, everything was black.
But it was a strange black. She moved her head, and felt fabric resist. Fabric? Was she under fabric. She moved, and it was strange. She looked at herself. She was a rat-thing. She didn't have time to scream, or freak out, because something inside of her took hold. The animal that she never knew was there, the animal that had stayed so secretly hidden for so long, felt a burst of freedom it rushed out. She realized she had been in her shirt. Her clothes were just laying there, slipped off as she slipped into her animal. The Ermine sniffed around. There was strange noises from somewhere. It didn't know what they were, but it looked up automatically. A hand was reaching toward it. Without thinking, it pushed up on its back legs and bit the hand as hard as it could, the sharp little teeth digging it.
The drunk man screamed, slinging his hand around until the Ermine sprang off---into his companions face. With no place to put teeth there, it scratched and scratched until the man was screaming too. It was flung off, and landed neatly on the ground. The men were running away. It let out a sound of victory, somewhere between a hiss and a sigh. Crystal had watched it all, not being able to do anything to influence this devil inside of her. The animals was apparently satisfied, because it was giving her full reign of the body now. She slid back into her shirt and thought, Now, change! Nothing happened. She started panicking. She had to go home. She couldn't stay an ermine in the middle of a part. She slipped out of the shirt. Grabbing the hem of the shirt and the hem of her pants, she tried to drag her clothes home with her. But she was so small, and the clothes soon became a burden. So she ran home without them. Too bad, they were her favorite pair of jeans.
When home, she slipped through the doggy door in her kitchen door and found a way to maneuver around everything so she could get upstairs to her room quickly. When in her room, she nudged the door shut with her little head and sat in the middle of the room. With nothing else to do, she curled up into a little ball and slept. When she woke up, she was human again.
She couldn't tell anybody. Who could she tell? Crystal kept telling herself that it wasn't real, it was a dream. But the burning in her heart told her otherwise. But, again, who could she tell? So she lived life, ignoring one of the biggest parts of her life.
Then it happened again. She shifted again. And it was as horrible as the first time. But at least she didn't hurt anybody the second time. She was fifteen. It was right before a Basic Defense class. She went, but she was distracted the whole time. As she was getting packed up when her teacher, Mr. Warrent, came over and asked if she was okay. With no reserve, she just spilled. She told him how she changes into this little devil and she doesn't know what's going on, on and on. She didn't look at him until she was done, and she didn't know what to expect. To be called crazy, to be checked to be sick, to be thrown out. But she didn't expect what she got: an understanding nod. He went out to the car where her mom was waiting, and had a long talk with her. Crystal was so embarrassed. Why did she spill? He was probably telling her mom how concerned she was for her.
When she went out to the car, she opened her mouth to explain when her mother said, "I'm so excited for you!" Crystal was rather confused. Her mom said that there was an academy that Crystal could go to, a special one that she would fit right in. Crystal was stunned, and her mom thought it was from happiness. She was just glad that she wasn't thought to be crazy. Mr. Warrent offered to get her transportation to the school. It was a silent ride. But at one point, he actually told her where she was going. It was a special place for Shifters just like her, and she would be able to meet people with the same problem. They even had a martial arts program. Crystal just let is wash over her. But then he explained something she thought amazing. He shifted too! He shifted into a bobcat, and he had gone to this same academy. Shifter Academy, he called it. He wished that she could have gotten there sooner, but tenth grade would have to do.
Crystal's been at SA for two years so far.
