Ebony ducked into the cafe, her hood pulled over head as she tried to escape the rain. Her hair was soaking wet, and she looked like a drowned rat. She reached into her backpack and pulled out a towel, drying her hair as she sat down.
A waitress came up to her, and she ordered a slice of carrot cake and a hot chocolate, intending to run after the storm was over. She was still ringing her hair out into the towel after the waitress left.
Ebony didn't feel comfortable in the little building, and she wondered if it was built to withstand a hurricane. But she didn't really want to focus on that, if she did she'd have more of a panic attack. So instead she wondered who her room mates were going to be. She decided that she'd have to go check it out after a while, maybe when the storm calmed down a little, but it would probably be after she got her food.
The waitress came back with a steaming mug and her slice of cake. Ebony pulled out a ten dollar bill from her pocket, and paid for her food, wishing she'd gotten something less expensive, like just the hot chocolate. She was glad that the bill was soaking wet, though.
Picking up her fork, she took a bite of the cake, and almost moaned in pleasure. It had been so long since she'd had a piece of cake. She held the mug in her hands, the steam wafting up to her face, and she took a drink of it, wishing that there was whipped cream on it.
Ebony jumped at a flash of lightning, glad she had set her mug down right before then. The zebra inside of her was scared, frightened of the storm.
Not safe, it said. Get some place safer.
She tried to ignore it, but it was hard considering she didn't have a hold over her animal yet. She had to be careful otherwise she would shift. Taking deep breaths, Ebony tried to calm down, fighting the urge to run as far away from the storm as possible.
Another bite of the carrot cake entered her mouth, and she chewed it absentmindedly, and thought about her future room mates again. She wondered what grade they were in, and what their shifts might be.
With my luck, one of them will probably be a lion, she thought, taking another sip of her hot chocolate.

When Sophia had woke up that morning, she was expecting to go swimming then ride Little Bit (a horse she would take care of and ride at a local farm), but her plans were ruined when, after she was already dressed, she heard the thunder and looked out her window to see rain pouring from the sky as if it was purposely trying to ruin her day. She didn’t want to sit around her house, especially since Celeste (her mom) would be home all that day, and would just get in her way. So, she decided to go to the Café and see what there was to see. She had been sitting in their for a good fifteen minutes when she heard the bell above the door ding.
Sophia watched the girl, who looked more like a soaked animal, entered the Café. She had never seen this girl before, and, she knew, this was a great opportunity to welcome her. Sophia smiled at her own joke, and decided to watch the girl before walking over to where the girl had chosen to sit her wet self down.
Sophia watched the girl order, and then saw her receive her food. She wrinkled her nose in disgust, Who orders hot chocolate and cake when it’s hot out? Sophia thought as her stomach growled. She looked down at her cup of decaf coffee and small muffin that sat untouched, in front of her, but ignored her stomach and looked back at the girl. Sophia almost threw up as she saw the girl’s eyes roll back when she took her first bite of the cake. She knew some people enjoyed food, but that was just a bit too much.
She didn’t want to watch the girl eat anymore, so she looked out the window at the storm. It was really poring down out there, and she figured it was from the hurricane that was going on out in the middle of the ocean. She had heard about it on the news, but didn’t think it would affect this far away from where it was supposed to be happening. She watched the rain hit the window on the front of the Café, and then race down it. She watched the rain for about five minutes, completely lost in thought about how she wished she could go ride Little Bit, but couldn’t since it was raining.
Sophia picked up the fork on her right and started to chop the small muffin in front of her into smaller pieces…she had always cut her food up into pieces, no matter how small it already was. She picked up one miniscule piece of muffin and slowly ate it, not really tasting it; she was trying to think of a reason to bother the girl. There was something about her that just bothered Sophia, but she couldn’t think of the reason why she didn’t like the girl. Maybe, it was just that she was soaked and hadn’t thought enough to have an umbrella, like Sophia had. She put down the fork, and then picked up the decaf coffee that was on her left. She took a sip, and tried not to spit it out, it was already cold. This was just not Sophia’s day, right from when she woke up it seemed like it was going to be a bad day. She needed someone to yell at, and this girl seemed like a perfect victim.
Sophia picked up her umbrella, and walked over to where the girl was sitting, leaving her coffee and muffin at the table. The girl was drinking the hot chocolate she had ordered and Sophia tried her best not to wrinkle her nose or act disgusted…at least, not yet. “Hi, I’m Sophia,” she introduced herself with a slight smirk as she felt her eyes change to a shining blue, something they hardly ever did.

"Hi, I'm Sophia," a girl said, and Ebony looked up to find someone talking to her.
She was pretty, but she looked like she could be mean. Ebony had a bad feeling about her, but she had to be polite, it was in her nature.
Ebony was a little hesitant, but she gave a closed mouth half smile and said, "I'm Ebony." Then she picked up her hot chocolate and took another sip, cold from the storm outside, and the water she had to face when she came over from Shifter Academy.
Which made her wonder if this girl was a shifter or human. Ebony didn't recognize her, but it was her first summer there after all, but she didn't want to be totally wrong, so she assumed she was human.
She had a panicky feeling, she was stressed, this girl was intimidating, even to her zebra. The eyes were scary, they had seemed to change color, but they were currently close to Ebony's own color.
She didn't want to talk to this girl, didn't want to take the chance, this girl could be a b****, for all Ebony knew. But that was odd for Ebony, she was usually extremely social. She thought it was just the intimidation factor but she wanted to feel more herself, so she said awkwardly, "I like your name." Which she did, it was a normal name, one that didn't stick out too much but was still pretty. Unlike Ebony, she always got weird looks when she told people her name, it wasn't too common that people named their kids Ebony.
This girl's scary, her zebra said, and Ebony was forced to agree. She didn't like to admit it, but this girl probably wasn't very nice, as much as she didn't like judging people.
Ebony picked up her fork, and absentmindedly took another bite of carrot cake, not tasting it. She was bored with eating it, even though she hadn't had cake in a while. It was just a piece of food, it wasn't even that good, and Ebony wished she had a carrot or something, even though she knew she'd really feel like a horse, er, zebra, if she ate a carrrot. Plus that would give the girl an opportunity to make fun of her. Still, she did have a bag of carrots in her backpack...
Stop thinking about the carrots! she told herself.

Sophia felt her smirk falter slightly when the girl introduced herself as Ebony. She thought that was a ridiculous name, but waited for the girl to same something better (and by better she meant something she could easily make fun of her for).
“I like your name.”[/i] Sophia couldn’t help but bring out her rude nature when Ebony said that,[/color] “Of course you like my name,” she smoothly sat down in the chair across the table from the girl, setting her umbrella loudly in front of her on the table, “if I had your name I would like any name...well, let’s face it, if I had your name I wouldn’t admit to it.” Sophia batted her eyelashes as she felt her eyes change back to the green with a hint of blue they usually were.
She looked again in disgust at the piece of cake Ebony had in front of her, “But then again, you and I…we’re not really that much alike, are we?” Sophia smiled sweetly, but in an intimidating way, “Of course we’re not. I’m me and you’re you. Is there anything wrong with that?” Sophia asked, but didn’t give the girl enough time to answer, “No, there’s not…well at least there wouldn’t be. See, the problem with you being you is,” she quickly looked the girl up in down, letting a look of plain disgust come across her face before smiling her I’m better than you and we both know it smile, “everything.” Sophia let out a sharp laugh, “You’re wearing pink with green with tennis shoes and jeans… I mean, who does that?” Sophia narrowed her eyes, ready to be mean (before was just her warming up), “Get a clue, girly, if you’re going for the original look, you’re not doing it right. You may think you look good and you’re expressing yourself or whatever the hell you think you’re trying to say with what you’re wearing, but, and I’m saying this in the nicest,” Sophia stretched “nicest” clearly lying, “way possible, you should really dress like everyone else. Some people can pull it off, others….shouldn’t be allowed to dress themselves,” she made sure when she said “others” she directly challenged Ebony.
Sophia sat across from the weird soaked girl, smiling a I’m winning, you should probably just walk away or get a clue smile. The thing about Sophia was that she always won. And she had a smile for every situation, especially if she was being mean.
Before Sophia couldn’t think twice she gave the most innocent smile she could manage, reached across the table, picked up the disgusting plate of cake, and tossed it at Ebony. This time she gave her I just did that, what are you gonna do about it? smile, and made eye contact with Ebony. She hoped Ebony would fight back, that was always more fun, but any reaction would make Sophia laugh. She didn’t exactly shove the cake at her, she could pass it off that she was going to see what kind it was and then it slipped.
She decided to make an excuse incase someone important was watching, “Oh! I’m so sorry,” Sophia tried her best to sound fake, but not too fake, “it just,” she paused, smiled a I’m lying, but you probably don’t have the balls to say I am smile, “slipped right out of my hands!”
Sophia then looked around the room, didn’t see anyone really watching after she had made her apology, and then she wiped her hands that had some cake on them on Ebony’s bag, which she saw sitting on the floor. “Oops, I’m sorry, I thought that was some old rag lying on the floor” she kept smiling, satisfied that this girl would cry any second.

Ebony felt like she was going to snap at any second. This girl was mean alright, and confident. It was obvious she enjoyed being that way, judging by her many smiles and satisfied expression.
The girl, Sophia, wiped her hands on Ebony's backpack, and Ebony started tapping her foot under the table, trying to not hit this girl. Her anger surprised her, it was like a sudden tornado, threatening to consume her. She had to calm down, though, so she plastered an obviously fake smile onto her face, determined to give this girl a taste of her own medicine. Zebras were known to bite after all.
Ebony wouldn't give Sophia the satisfaction of seeing her cry. No, she wouldn't cry anyway, she was mad, not upset, something Sophia probably see in her “I'm better than you” land.
Brushing some cake off of herself, Ebony said, “Oh, no, it's fine. Accidents happen after all.” On the last part, Ebony had picked up her now cold hot chocolate, and pretended to sneeze, splashing, well, more so throwing the drink all over Sophia's outfit.
“Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry, you little liar. I'm sure that stain will come out though once you clean up your bitchy attitude,” she said in mock apology, her voice tightening on “you little liar,” giving a response to the girl's smile that said that she thought Ebony didn't have the guts to call her out on her lies. Ebony was surprised at herself, though. She never cussed; if Sophia wasn't so mean, she would probably feel bad about it.
Ebony stood up from the table, having already paid, grabbing her backpack and putting it on, as she watched the cake crumbs fall off of it.
“It was so nice talking to you, Sophia,” she added before walking out. Once she was out of the café, she ran as fast as she could, desperate to get away. Her feet pounded against the ground, keeping a steady rhythm with her heartbeat. She steadied her breathing and focused on getting away from that girl.
Wonder what Sophia thought of that, she thought to herself, laughing inside.
She continued to run, she ran all the way back to the ferry, ready to go back to school. A hurricane was better than dealing with rotten Sophia. When the ferry came in to the dock, she got on immediately. A few other people joined her, and after a few minutes, the boat took off, and Ebony sighed in relief. {Tag: Sophia. Sophia gasped as she felt the cold hot chocolate hit her shirt. She wanted to throw a chair at this girl, she wanted to smack her. No one treated her this way and got away with it.
Sophia listened to the girl try to seem mean and tough, Ebony didn’t scare Sophia one little bit. It was when she commented on her bitchy attitude that Sophia clenched her fist and tried to breathe slowly to calm herself down. She felt the disgusting drink stain her shirt.
Sophia muttered, “You little shit,” .
But Sophia knew that Ebony hadn’t heard her, because Ebony stood up, made a remark, which Sophia guessed Ebony thought was witty, and then left. Sophia grabbed her umbrella, fixed her hat and went out the door, seconds after Ebony had. “You think you won?!? You think this is over?? Think again!” Sophia spit on the sidewalk and yelled after Ebony as she ran away like the scared little animal she was.
Sophia smiled and felt her eyes change to a darker green, she wanted revenge…and she knew she would get it. Sophia began to run after Ebony, but she knew she wouldn’t catch up. She threw her umbrella at her, and landed just barely behind her.
Sophia cursed at the rain, at the wind, at everything. She walked back toward the café, but didn’t go in. She kept walking and sat on the corner of an old street. No one was out in the storm, so she sat alone. She took off her hat, no longer caring if her hair got soaked or not. Her shirt was ruined, as so were part of her shorts. Her umbrella was on the sidewalk where she had thrown it.
Sophia looked up at the sky, the clouds, and the rain pouring down on her. She frowned, not wanting to go home this early in the day. Sophia brought her knees up to her chest and rested her arms on her knees, her head slightly bent up. She began to wonder if there was a point in life, if some people really had a greater purpose, or if everyone was just living pointless lives, and staying alive in vain. She put her hand to shield her eyes as a car passed with its lights on.
Sophia stood up, brushed off all the dead grass and miniscule rocks that had stuck to the back of her jean shorts and legs. She walked back toward her umbrella. She walked passed the café, passed an old broken-down car, and an empty house with a tire swing in the yard. She bent down and scooped up her umbrella in one motion. Her hat was in one hand; her umbrella was in the other. Sophia began to walk back to the corner she had been sitting on, when she remembered the stain on her shirt. She switched her hat over to her other hand and quickly slipped off her shirt. She knew it was ruined, so she tossed it in the first trashcan she saw. She was extremely glad she had worn her swim-suit under her top.
Sophia had planned to just go back to where she had been sitting, or go home, but when she passed the old, empty, abandoned house…she couldn’t help but stop. She walked up to the house, ran her hand along the railing, the windowsill, the half-way gone door. She felt her expression change…and she couldn’t explain what it changed to, it was a mix of sadness, disgust, and regret. She went to the tire swing, sat down, and felt the texture of the tire against her legs and arms as she fit through the opening. She bounced a little to check the structure of it, and dropped her hat and the umbrella onto the ground beneath her. She pumped her legs back and forth, letting her hair move freely; her bare stomach got soaked from the rain that could still reach her, even though she had protection from the branches above her.
She felt her eyes change to the brightest, most crystal-looking blue they had ever been. When they changed to that color, which meant she was truly happy (or thinking of something that made her happy). She smiled, a real smile, as she swung herself higher and higher. She let the rain drops that wanted to fall on her, the ones that didn’t she simply looked at. She loved nature, she loved the world, she loved so many things; she really wasn’t a bad person…not at heart. She slightly laughed as she swung even higher, and felt the wind woosh past her skin.
