It was much too hot a day for socks of any sort, Tara thought. And so, for the second day in a row, she wore flip flops with her shorts instead of her usual sneakers and knee socks. Too bad, too, for knee socks were her favorite article of clothing.
Despite the weather, and despite the fact that the weatherman had predicted more sun, Tara wanted to spend the day indoors. Why? She wanted to spend time somewhere air conditioned. And lucky she did, for soon after she stepped foot into the mall, it started getting really windy outside. So whatever weird weather awaited them, Tara would have to wait it out in the mall. After contemplating this, Tara had decided she could live with it, so she shook the thought.
Right now, she had to focus on what she was here for... pants. Or rather, shorts. Right now, Tara only had a couple of pairs of shorts, and certainly not enough to last a week, so she often ended up roasting to death in long pants (something it was way too hot out for). So Tara went to the mall in search of shorts. But as usual, put anyone in a building this big selling all sorts of things, and they would get distracted. For example, Tara was now in a book store. She didn't need more books (she was in the middle of one she borrowed from the library now) but here she was, looking at them.
But then suddenly, it was as if a switch turned in Tara's head. She put down the book she held (Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K Dick, a book her friend had recommended to her) and thought to herself 'Tara, what are you doing? You can look at books later. First, do what you came here to do and go get some shorts.'
And with that, Tara exited the store. Taking care to stop by the directory, she noted that the clothing stores she wanted to visit were on the other side of the mall. So she continued down the hall way, looking at things in the windows of stores she passed, but not stepping foot into any of them. There was a way-to-expensive-for-any-student's-budget jewelry store, an athletic shoe store, a store full of fancy purses, a video game store (Tara took note to visit it when she was done buying shorts), a baby store...
Tara caught a whiff of orange chicken and knew that she had just stepped foot into the food court. She mentally told herself she wasn't hungry, but her stomach rejected this idea with a loud rumbling noise, reminding her that she hadn't had more than a cup of coffee and a bagel since morning, and it was already past lunch time.
Well, what was a few minutes? she thought as she headed toward the food line. The shorts would still be there when she was finished eating.
