Hrm. Well, those clouds didn't look too friendly from the window of Heidi's dorm. They weren't quite black, but they were an intimidating shade of gray none the less. Still fluffy around the edges, they rolled in the skies as the mere size of them swallowed the blue of the upper atmosphere mercilessly. There was still light out in the thinning afternoon, though, and that was enough to convince Heidi to shrug on some clothes and head on out to the beach. She had her mind set on coming down to the sandy shore for days now, and no possy of clouds were going to bully her out of it. Figuring it might be a little chilly out, though, Heidi decided to pull on some comfortable, fitted jeans with a simple dusty toned 'military' long sleeve combination. It's cream colored buttons trailed neatly up and down it's length, the waist pinching in some while the ends of the material flared out. She frowned at herself slightly in the mirror, though, usually used to a little more color than what she was sporting now. "Guess it won't hurt to tone it down some today," she mumbled to herself, roommates absent from the area.
Grabbing a pair of her sunglasses off of her part of the dresser and wedging it into her hair, her other hand snatched up her dorm room key that was looped securely around a chain. Slipping this over her head, Heidi simultaneously turned to hunt down her shoes while hazel eyes nervously flickered to the window outside. It looked like the storm was going to be rolling in not too long from now, but she only wanted ten minutes at best down on those sandy shores. Nothing more, just some time to check out the beach as she hadn't been there yet. Quickly sliding on a pair of gladiator sandals, the girl was out of the dorm in a matter of seven minutes, already hitting the stairs and working her way outside before the door to the room had clicked shut. The rubber and plastic combination of the sandals clicked lightly against the stairs as the frame of the girl quickly jogged down them, desperate to get her ten minutes in before those clouds got any more intimidating.
They were threatening enough as it was! Still, she made haste down the bright hallways, weaving in and out of hallways until the doors to the lobby stood proudly before her. Approaching them quickly, Heidi hesitated only once before pressing her weight into one side of the wooden double doors to let herself out, always finding these doors a bother to get in and out from. Perhaps it had something to do with her not being the most buff girl in the world out there, or maybe it had to do with the fact that they were just plain heavy. None the less, they didn't stall the determined collie-girl for too long before she was out skittering across the green lawn. Her inner beast stirred within her, then, waking from it's momentary sleep as it whined to her. Inside? it suggested, trying to get her to turn back around. Which, to say the least, was quite odd considering both the human and animal halves absolutely adored being outside.
Heidi disregarded the suggestion though, and resorted to just ignoring the beast within. Nothing was stopping her from getting to this beach today, and she was set on keeping it that way! Although.. the wind that was picking up around her and carelessly flinging her hair about seemed to have a different agenda. Arms wrapped around her waist, feeling the nippy chill start to penetrate her skin. Man, why hadn't she thought to grab a jacket? It was too late now, unfortunately, as Heidi was quite a ways away from the school as the beach loomed in the near distance. The air was moist, stale even, and it somewhat put her on edge. The sunglasses on the crown of her head seemed a ridiculous idea at this point, considering there was wasn't a single sign of the sun in the sky now as the clouds had managed to consume that too. All that remained was the bitter wind, and what light was left in the day desperately clinging in the air.
Finally hitting the sand, her sandals sank delightfully into the shifty texture, an appreciative sigh leaving her lips. Doubt wasn't far off, though, that she'd made a wrong decision coming out here at this time, and so late in the day. Cloud puffs in the air were getting thicker and darker by the minute, threatening to let loose their unmerciful load of rain at any minute. "Well... I'm here now, might as well enjoy it." Heidi mused to herself, a little unsure as she pulled herself further onto the beach, weary of the wave activity going on ahead. Knees bent as body lowered while she seated herself in the cold grains of sand, giving a light shiver as she really wished she had that coat now. Inner collie still spoke to her in light, pleading tones, something not setting with it's instincts.
All she could do was sigh and shake her head, dismissing the requests once again. Eyes shifted down the beach, looking to see if anyone else was around and as insane as her for being out here. She seemed alone, which was both a little disappointing and relieving. Worst case, she'd just get a little wet, right? Nothing serious.

I need a little more luck than a little bit CUZ EVERYTIME I GET STUCK THE WORDS DON'T FIT---W hat a boring day it was. There wasn't much to do and Karter couldn't really say he had accomplished much this entire day. Boring as hell and enough was enough. He had to find some sort of thing to keep himself from going insane and he decided that maybe he could go for a swim in the ocean at Beluga Beach. He hadn't shifted in a long while and he felt as if today was a good day to get back into it. He was bored, and he didn't think many people would be at the beach for a variety of reasons. One was that it was not sunny outside. On the contrary, it was really gray and cloudy. That gets rid of the tanners. The swimmers wouldn't be swimming close to shore since the waters were really rough. The only other people that would be there are the ones that just liked to sit and do nothing, and really who does that during the week? He was up in his dorm and started to get ready. He got his swim trunks (though he didn't think he would use them since he was about to shift) and a normal t-shirt. He decided he might need a sweater since it looked kind of cool, so he took a solid gray sweater, popped the hood on and undid the zipper so you could still see the shirt. He quickly pulled it on and grabbed his keys. Aoi and Chris were both not in the room and therefore he could not, absolutely COULD NOT forget his keys again. Last time, he was waiting outside for Aoi to come back for a solid 90 minutes. That was the biggest waste of time in the world and he was so frustrated with himself. Ever since then he never forgot. He shut the door, locked it, and started making his way to the beach. Walking he could feel a little rain starting to spit down on him. Meh, it'll ease up soon. The rain probably wouldn't last too long and even if it did, the whale in him could survive in the ocean in the rain evidently. He would just dive down and have to swim in the rain. No big deal. Still, something didn't feel right. There was something in the air and it was trying to push him back inside. He disregarded it though thinking it was ridiculous. He finally reached his destination and his hopes of having the whole beach to himself were crushed when he saw the back of a girl sitting on the sand. He looked up and down the beach and she was one of the only ones that he saw. There were a few people way in the distance, but other than that, it was just him and her. He was tempted to just walk away and go back to his room to do nothing again. The rain was getting a little bit heavier and it would surely start to pour at some point. He didn't feel comfortable shifting in front of her since, well, they are naked afterwards and when he shifted back he...well...he just would rather not if he didn't have to. Instead of turning away though, he decided to go and keep her company. After all, it would probably be much better than just sitting inside doing nothing. One thing kind of made him a bit hesitant and that was just what to say. Everything that ran through his head felt...stalkerish and weird to say to someone for the first time. He couldn't think of what to say but as he was thinking his phone went off. A text. He silently read, "Karter! Where are you? They're saying we're supposed to be getting a hurricane and from the looks of it it's already starting. Get back into the room now! I'm scared." Ugh, yup that was Aoi alright. His roommate was scared of a lot of things (well, not really but anyway) but if there was a hurricane on the way he should probably get the hell out of there. The beach was no place to be if there was a hurricane. He started walking to the girl. Now instead of acting all stalkerish and creepy, he could simply tell her that a hurricane was about to happen and that she should flee the scene. He walked up to her and kneeled down next to her, "Hey there," he started, "I know this might seem kind of random for me to be telling you this, but my roommate just texted me saying a huge hurricane was going to make its way through. I'm going to flee the beach and just wanted to let you know. I would hope you'd do the same." He couldn't decide whether to wait for a reply or just leave, but he stood up and stuck out his hand. He didn't want her staying out here by herself if a hurricane would start. Heidi sat there patiently in the sand, fighting every urge she had to just get up and walk back to the dorm rooms. No one was in her dorm anyways, and she hated being alone -- not like out here was much better. The ocean was, however, one of her favorite places to come and think when she (rarely) needed time to herself, so in a way, it kind of was better than being locked up alone. And so the girl sat, her legs criss crossed over each other leaving a print, no doubt, in the sand. Another cold, chilly breeze sailed on by the beach, soon after followed by one of a stronger tug. Body swayed slightly to the left as the wind yanked her along, trying to pry her from her spot. Stubbornly, she kept her waist grounded into the sand firmly and more or less remained still.
Hazel eyes gazed out to the ocean waters, watching in both awe and slight fear. The waves were certainly picking up in strength as they crashed along the beach's shore, white foam spreading all along the beach's length. It reminded her of greedy fingers or something; the waves. Reaching out against the sand with a loud slap, then clawing it's way back into the ocean body as sand was dragged along. It was clear the tide was coming in, but she couldn't be bothered to move. Even when the first plip-plops of rain started to dot her shirt, she remained steady. No doubt Heidi had a bad feeling sitting in her chest as the weather was taking a turn for the worst, but no immediate danger seemed to be nearby. Not yet, anyways. Rain started coming down heavier then, gradually working it's way up to a good downpour. Her dusty brown colored shirt was littered in darker blobs where the rain had hit, and her jeans felt cold with the combination of rain and wind.
Arms squeezed tightly around her waist to try and conserve what heat she could muster up. Heidi had been right; it -was- chilly out here. But she had no idea it was going to be this cold. Her senses detected an.. electric-like taste in the air, feeling the slight buzz on the tip of her tongue. It used to do that back at home before it started raining -- looked like today they were a little slow. Knees bent upwards as she pulled them to her chest, squeezing her arms around these instead while her chin rested on top of them. Maybe it -would- be a good idea to head back. But oh... the beach was just so tempting...
Just then, a shadow fell over her huddled frame and caught her by surprise. Blinking, her neck craned to find the source and there, standing before her, was another student. His presence had been so unexpected, given the vast, pretty much empty scene of the beach and he'd come from downwind; so the scent hadn't been detected. "I know this might seem kind of random for me to be telling you this, but my roommate just texted me saying a huge hurricane was going to make its way through. I'm going to flee the beach and just wanted to let you know. I would hope you'd do the same."
Whoa wait, what? A... hurricane?! She quickly jerked her eyes back down to the salty water as if to see if this claim was legit. And there, larger than they were just a few moments ago, were the vicious waves crashing and dragging closer to the more wet sand. It was alarming, really. She'd never seen wave activity like that. And as if to further prove the point of an oncoming hurricane, the clouds opened up more and let an onslaught of cold, wet rain soak the land below it. Heidi included as her reddish brown hair started to cling and frame the sides of her face and her shirt, darkening with the moisture. Inner collie gave a bit of a snort, as if in a I told you so kind of way, leaving Heidi to regret coming outside at all. Shaking her head to clear her thoughts, attention was drawn back towards the boy nearby, half a smile on her lips.
"A hurricane? Seriously..? Man, of all days." One wet arm wedged it's self off of her knees to reach out and take the offering hand, hoisting herself back up to her feet. Swatting away the clumps of sand that had stuck to the back of her legs and butt of the jeans, another deep shiver surged through her body. It looked like the boy had had intentions on diving into the water himself, judging by the swimming shorts. "Looks like I'm not the only one disappointed today, and thanks for the heads up." she grinned, having to speak loudly over the rain and wind as she jerked her chin in the direction of his trunks. Thumbs looped through her belt loops leaving her hands to lie idly at their sides after wiping some of the water from her freckled face, finding her vision getting distorted through all the falling, near horizontal rain. With eyes half squinted, a thumb pointed over her shoulder back towards the school.
"I think it's going to get a lot worse out here before we get back inside!" Practically yelling at this point, her head cocked hopefully to the side, feeling goosebumps blossom on her arms from the cold. "Don't s'pose you know another building around here to dip into or something..?" At the rate the weather was growing, they were more likely to get blown away or something before either could reach the academy. Or, so she figured. Heidi had a habit of blowing things out of proportion sometimes in situations like these, so perhaps the storm really wasn't all that bad. So far.

I need a little more luck than a little bit CUZ EVERYTIME I GET STUCK THE WORDS DON'T FIT---K arter watched as she was clearly shocked with the news that he had given her. Unfortunately, it was the same reaction that he had when he was notified. He didn't want to leave the beach and waste a day, but he also didn't want to get hurt or die. SOOOO ya hurricane wins this round. The rain pelted the duo even harder now and he felt as if that was a good enough reason to believe Aoi. First signs of a hurricane was the wind and the rain and even though the wind wasn't really that bad yet, the rain was getting worse by the second. The girl finally spoke in return and surprised Karter, as her reply was exactly the same as what he was thinking. "A hurricane? Seriously..? Man, of all days." He was also really bummed out and shocked. A hurricane was just so random especially since it was so nice this past week. All of a sudden? It just all seemed so odd. He felt as if this was a confirmation that the world was sometimes against him. Ah well, life goes on. He gripped her hand as she clasped it in his and helped her onto her feet. He watched as she cleaned up her pants from the sticky sand that had been underneath her and wanted to help her, but decided that, yet again, that would be whoa creepy. He felt his head and silently thanked his hood for doing the job of shielding his head from the wetness. At least it was staying remotely dry. The girl spoke again, "Looks like I'm not the only one disappointed today, and thanks for the heads up." Wow, so their intentions were similar! That was very interesting. "Nope, definitely not," he started to reply, "a dip in the water would've really been good. It's a shame really. Oh and don't mention it" He smiled. He wasn't going to let her stay out in the middle of a hurricane, seriously? What kind of person would he be. She pointed back to the school and warned, "I think it's going to get a lot worse out here before we get back inside!" He noticed a voice escalation in her and a diminished hearing ability in him. The rain was really taking it's toll and he could feel the wind now, getting stronger. The hurricane was here, and it may not be a race against time to get back into the school. "Don't s'pose you know another building around here to dip into or something..?" Shoot, he would've paid to know a closer building. It was quite the trek back to the school. He shook his head and raised his voice, "That's a negative. I really wish I did though." He motioned for them to start walking. "We need to get moving or we might be chased by the weather."The hurricane was closing in on them as they started to walk. The wind was whipping and whirling the sand causing the grains to smack the duo all over. Karter opened his eyes but could barely see anything in between the raindrops and sandstorm. It was beginning to get ridiculous. The wind howled and there was a loud burst of thunder. Shoot, now all the elements were here. Now the only thing that Mother Nature had to do was intensify it slowly, and there was no doubt in his mind that it would happen. It was getting louder. The rain, the wind, the sand, the thunder. He yelled to his partner, "We need to speed up!" he started to give a light jog, "Jogging sounds like a good idea right about now eh?" He looked over but could barely see her. His two hands gripping his hood tightly. This was definitely not the day that he had planned. All he wanted to do was go for a swim, but instead he was running from a deadly storm that could intensify gradually. Karter wasn't really scared yet at this point, however he knew that if the weather got worse, his nervousness would turn into fright in no time.[/blockquote] ---And every time that I try I get tongue tied I'LL NEED A LITTLE GOOD LUCK TO GET ME BY THIS TIMEcount :931 tags:Heidi noted: So I kind of started it, hope you don't mind! Heidi watched most of the boy's facial reactions as her words curled and twisted about in the hazy weather, just barely getting to his ears all in one place and together. By the looks of things, he seemed to be more or less right on the same thinking track as she was. Which, of course, was quite a comforting thought. He wasn't mean or threatening in any sort of way, or at least not in any sense that she could detect. Her friend had warned her of some bullies around the school's campus, prone to going up to anyone and just messing with them because they had the guts, and the animal shift, to back themselves up if things got ugly. Heidi had been cautious since then to be on her toes in case a rhino or something that was horribly unfriendly came out of nowhere and charged just for the sake of doing it.
So far, she'd yet to meet this person she'd pretty much made up in her head; and this student didn't seem to fit the bill (thankfully). Not to mention that now she was closer to him and facing his direction, the collie started picking something off of him as it attempted to decipher the animal shift he carried in his genes. For a reason unknown to Heidi, the dog seemed to have developed this habit of doing it to people she'd only just met, rather than sit around and wait for her to provide the answer for both of them after a simple question. Usually, it was pretty close to hitting the mark as far as using it's high sense of smell to detect the hidden animal, but of course, there had been times when the canine couldn't have been more wrong. Either way, currently, it was working it's self up into a tissy trying to figure out what the boy was. The salty air and the unstable weather weren’t exactly –helping- this task along, needless to say, but it kept the pesky voice of the dog out of Heidi’s immediate thought tracks, and that was enough to keep her happy.
Heidi was pretty bummed that her visit had to be chopped short but, no doubt she’d rather not end up mangled in a tree somewhere due to this freak storm. She promised herself to have to come out here another time when impending doom wasn’t hanging just over the horizon, and hoped it’d be sometime soon. ”Nope, definitely not,” she heard, looking back over to the friendly other. "a dip in the water would've really been good. It's a shame really. Oh and don't mention it" A full smile couldn’t be helped as her head nodded along in agreement, the wet hair follicles clinging like suction cups on a glass window to her face and turning into quite the bother. ”Oh yeah, I couldn’t agree with you more there! I’d give anything to go for a swim right about now, but… considering the circumstances…” Allowing her voice to trail off, Heidi was more than sure the stranger knew what she was talking about as a light chuckle picked up. Most of it’s sound had been whisked away by the not-so-easy breeze anyways, but she didn’t mind.
”That’s a negative. I really wish I did though.” Her heart sank a few inches at the depressing announcement of the news, and her face mimicked this slightly. Drat! Now the two were positively stuck hiking all the way back to the school campus, through all this rain and muck. Sand grains picked up then, succumbing to the force and will of the wind, and started twirling and pelting the two unforgivingly. What, now a sandstorm too? Good grief, this would be a night to remember – that much was certain! Quickly snatching her fingers up from the waist of her jeans, she used her shaking, cold fingers to reach up and pop the collar of her shirt to, hopefully, deflect some of the debris. ”We need to get moving or we’ll get chased by the weather.” And he spoke the truth! ”Couldn’t have said it better myself!” she yelled back over, and quickly took into the direction of the school, following close behind and to the side of the other with her numb fingers clenching the collar of her shirt tightly.
Moving was indeed difficult out here in the elements, what with the wind pulling and tugging on them so much. As if it were pleading for them to return to the vicious waves behind them. She thought momentarily that it might’ve been a good idea to put on her sunglasses to help keep the sand grains from her eyes, but… her vision was bad enough out here as it was, so making it dark –and- stormy out here was a no-no. The blurred outline of the friendly fellow who’d been so kind not to leave her suffering out here loomed closely by, and she did her best not to stagger and sway too much as to fall down and slow them up even more. The last thing either of them needed was to be out here longer than they had to! And then, out of the blue, she saw his frame start to move away from her current position increasingly faster, much quicker than a normal walking rate. She’d hardly heard any of his words come through the thickening weather, but did manage to catch the word ‘jog’. Figuring he’d made a suggestion to get back to safety faster than mere walking, Heidi was all game for it. Speed and stamina were just a few traits collies were known for, and she luckily hadn’t been deprived of either.
Her pace quickened against the invisible force, thunder cracking and booming over their heads and making her jump in surprise. Heart rate, too, started to pump more ferociously than before as they left the beach behind them, but not only because her walk had turned into a brisk jog. It was the fear building up inside of her; the panic fueling her adrenaline more and more as she constantly mentally wished she’d managed to find some indoor activity to keep her happy earlier that late afternoon. “I’ve never even –seen- a storm this bad before in my life!” she called up to the student, catching up as her shoulders hunched and her chin pulled down. It was quite certain that her clothes were positively drenched at this point, water sopping down her cheeks and face as they jogged back to the school. Somewhere off to her right, the sounds of a tree snapping and thunking to the ground was heard as she gave an involuntary scream. Things were looking bad out here, and fast.

I need a little more luck than a little bit CUZ EVERYTIME I GET STUCK THE WORDS DON'T FIT---This was not a good scene. The wind and rain were picking up and the sand and droplets were pelting the duo as they tried to run for cover. The only problem with their plan was that they did not have any sort of cover in sight. There was no where close by that counted as a place they could hide. Thunder boomed through the sky in a reminder to Karter that he needed to get inside quickly before the weather got even worse. He looked back to see if his new pal was still by his side and she was. He didn't want her falling behind or being left behind in this situation as no one should have to take on this weather solo. Lightning flashed and lit up the sky which was a new part of the storm. Up until now, it had only been minor thunder, lots of wind and rain, and a mini-sandstorm. Now Mother Nature has thrown in lightning and has turned her weather dial up a notch. What a bitch she was sometimes.
He was starting to get nervous now as his heart rate increased as well as his adrenaline. He liked getting the feeling of the adrenaline rush when it was a swim meet, or a roller coaster or something fun. But the adrenaline rush that he was feeling right now was the complete opposite of what he's used to feeling. He has never been so scared or nervous in his entire life and he has done some whacky and crazy things. He had no intentions, however, of letting the girl know that he was scared or nervous. He wanted to play leader and try to show no fear. Though it was really hard in a storm like this to not show any fear at all. They finally made it off the sands of the beach but were still quite a ways away from the residences of the school. He listened as the girl cried out, “I’ve never even –seen- a storm this bad before in my life!” That made two of them. This was the worst storm he had ever seen as well and he decided to let her know, "Same here! This is absolutely ridiculous!" He struggled as he tried to project his voice even louder now that the rain was getting louder and the wind was howling. The challenge just made it up to a new level.
Karter struggled to open his eyes without the rain causing him to close the soon after. He shielded them with his hand by lining the side of his hand with his eyebrows, and looked to see if there was anywhere that they could go for even a bit of shelter while the weather subsided a bit. He looked around and saw an old looking shack that might be able to do the trick. It was still a trek away but if they went in then he hoped it would offer at least a bit of shelter for them. He pointed to the shack and yelled to the girl, "I'm thinking that shack could help us out right about now." He wasn't sure how much it would help but he knew that they just had to get somewhere with a remote bit of safety attached. He knew the shack was the best bet as there was nothing else close by.
Changing his running direction, he started running to the shack and watched close behind in hopes that the girl approved of the idea and would be running right behind as well. It was getting closer and closer in sight and his legs were yelling at Karter to stop running. He was not athletic at all on land and he knew how out of shape he was when it came to running. He just sucked at it, plain and simple. He was a great swimmer and could practically live in the water. He played water polo, he surfed, he swam competitively, and could do pretty much any water sport in the world. But once he's on land he becomes much more unbalanced, disoriented, and lazy. His running was proof of this. He didn't look goofy while doing it, but he was in much pain as his legs were not used to having his body slam down on them with every stride.
Closer and closer they came until finally they reached the shack in question. Another loud thunder boomed and another lightning crackled through the sky. Karter ran to the entrance only to realize a metal latch with a chain attached mounted to the handle so that no intruders could enter. "Damnit!" he yelled as he shook the chains in hopes that the lock would break off by only using his bare hands. That definitely wasn't going to happen. He looked around and found a big rock, lifted it up and started hitting it against the lock. Rain pouring down his face and wind blowing at his body. He tried to get it open as fast as he can but the lock was obviously doing its job. He kept going though and his inner animal was trying to help as much as it could. He knew the girl was waiting and so was he. He continued banging and banging the lock until finally the lock came off. He unraveled the chains and through them on the floor. "Get in, get in!" he yelled to the girl as he let her go in before himself. He slammed the door shut.
Finally, they were in a place where the hurricane couldn't pulverize them. Dripping wet he was in a bit of shock as to what had just happened. They had just ran from the beach as a hurricane hit. What were the chances! He ringed out his shirt and watched as, what seemed like a gallon of water, emptied from his top. He looked around. Nothing too extraordinary about this shack. Just a wooden shack that was probably used for storage. "Are you alright?" he asked the girl, "Some adventure huh?" He smiled at her. This was definitely on the top of his list of the most intense things that have ever happened to him. Right after realizing he was a shifter of course. He decided now might be a good time to introduce himself as well, "I know that a lot has just happened but it would be nice to know the name of my partner" he smiled at her, "I'm Karter." They really had been partners this entire way through. Only time can tell what their fate would be now though.

Okay, 'bad' was an understatement. Things were going from bad, to hectic, to just plain ugly before her own eyes. Had there just been rain and thunder like a -normal- storm with the occasional flash of lightning, sure! No problem, jogging back to the school wouldn't have been so challenging. But, alas, nature apparently had to be pmsing on this -very day- and was determined to bring all hell and whatelse to the land. If she was unhappy, then no one would be. Heidi's footfalls fell under her with less grip than she would have liked on the ground, but considering the situation, she had to work with what she had. The sopping wet ground was better than the sand, though, that much she knew, and so the collie just focused more on not slipping and falling on her face rather than how quickly she was going.
The girl, given her collie half, was a natural athlete at land. Collies were one of the fastest dog breeds out there, and their stamina was none to scoff at either. But they typically never ran in hurricane weather, and she hadn't been running around training like she used to back at home so, chances were she wasn't going to 'preform' at the top of her ability. Still, Heidi managed to keep close to Karter who seemed to know where they were going - luckily - and made a slightly bitter mental note to hit the treadmill in the gym the following week to catch back up with her own expectations. She wasn't serious about running, and had even stopped that as a hobby as music had become more and more in focus, considering her major. However, now that she knew freak storms like this were prone to the island, an adjustment to her free time spent playing the piano would certainly have to be made in case she landed in a situation like this again. Knowing her luck, it was probable.
Loud, vicious thunder sounds boomed over head, vibrating the ground with it's power while bolts of lightning seized the earth further off in the distance, it's zigg-zag pattern crashing with contact as it made a line from the clouds to whatever it was hitting. Above, the dark voluptuous clouds had completely swallowed the light of the late afternoon, leaving only the bare minimum to see through. Well, if there was any seeing to be done at all in this inclement weather. The dark closing in around the island seized her heart as the panic only increased; this was what she had been afraid of, certainly. Dark places in general put Heidi in a coward-like situation, her phobia unbearable in even the smallest of situations. Such as reaching into a dark closest. If she couldn't see all the way inside, Heidi simply turned to her roommates for help in her pathetic attempt to reach at something.
Sometimes she amazed herself at how she was able to sleep at night.
"Same here! This is absolutely ridiculous!" came the struggling voice over the deafening wind and rain, and she couldn't have agreed more. Just how awful was it going to get out here anyways? And most of all, how much longer did they have until the school was finally within their line of vision? A lot, she figured for both as numb fingers desperately clung to the collar of her shirt; it's effects not helping any to keep her neck dry. "I'm thinking that shack could help us out right about now." Heidi barely had caught every word he said, but when she looked up instead of at her feet, just through the rain she, too, saw the little building. And her heart did a double flip in excitement. Yes! Shelter! If even only for a minute. Thrilled despite the weather and darkness scooping them both up, she shouted up to her partner, straining her voice, "Definitely! Quick, let's get inside to try and wait this thing off!"
And with that, her legs started to run a bit more furiously below as she noticed Karter, too, had picked up his speed. Good decision. The way things were looking, they'd both be trying to swim their way over to shack than run given the rate of the rainfall. Heidi didn't know about Karter, but when it came to swimming, she could do the bare minimum; and that was doggy paddle. Not a life saving method of swimming but, it was the only thing that came natural given she never learned. Deciding it'd be better not to drown, she ran all the faster against the onslaught of rain and wind towards the humble little shack in the nearing distance, each foot fall bringing them ever closer. Finally approaching it, Heidi only arrived mere seconds just after Karter, who seemed to have discovered something quite discouraging given his tone.
She stood and watched as he turned to look for something, and took the opportunity to check out the door for herself. ..A lock?! A pained look crossed her face as she groaned, the sound stripped away by the ruthless wind. Of all things to happen, their only chance of some kind of shelter had been robbed all because some petty janitor couldn't have just done the job wrong and left it unlocked just this once? Looking to her side, the soaked and shivering girl noticed Karter as he charged toward the door and slammed down the impressively large rock he had found over and over again on the lock, clearly trying to break it open.It took a few swings, but it had done the trick of breaking the pesky barrier open, and Heidi had to stop herself from squealing in delight. "Get in, get in!" he shouted, ushering her inside. Oh, right, survival time. Dance later. Hardly hesitating, Heidi scrambled into the little structure and heard the whoosh of the door as her comrade seemed to successfully pull it shut behind them.
Panting heavily, Heidi leaned against the wall that shared the door with a wet smack and slid to the ground, her chest heaving in and out roughly while her lungs desperately tried to supply the amount of oxygen she needed at the moment. No easy feat. Crouched up against the wooden wall, her head bobbing with each exhale her lungs made, eyes swept the tiny building that couldn't have been much bigger or smaller than a child's bedroom. Boxes were lined up in the corners, various shovels and rakes and other gardening tools randomly places here and there against them. Outside, the constant wailing of the weather continued on past the shack, but for now it looked like the little building could hold it's own despite it all. Throwing her head back against the wall, she couldn't help but chuckle at Karter's next statement, water droplets rolling down her face from her miserably soaked hair.
"Are you alright? Some adventure huh?" and she looked up to notice his smile, even with the pounding rain outside. Nodding her drenched head, Heidi gave a weak laugh as she tried to ignore the darkness of the room. It wasn't pitch black, but due to no visible light source that she could see, the little room only held a faint glow on the inside as it pulled what light it could from the environment outside. It was light enough to not cause her to go into her usual state of shock, but if it got any darker outside, Heidi knew she was going to be in trouble. Pushing that thought aside, her lips parted in reply. "Yeah, yeah I'm good. How about you, are you okay?" came the question, her eyes immediately giving him a sweep over to see if he'd been impaired by some rogue flying object or something. He appeared to be alright, from what she could see anyways. "And yeah, man... I would have been just fine with going for a swim as my idea of fun for the day but, y'know.. this works too."
His next phrase shocked her lightly, to say the least, and it showed on her face. Had she really been so forgetful in exchanging names while they were still on the beach? Honestly? Well... given the turn of events that had followed suit, them not dying was more on the priority list than her saying her silly little name. Now, though, seemed like a good time to give it up as they didn't seem to be in any immediate danger. Here inside the shack. And to this, she grinned back, "I'm Heidi, nice to meet'cha Karter." And it was. "Had it not been for you sticking around with me, I'd probably be swimming in that ocean now, but.. not willingly," she joked with a giggle "Thanks again", and pushed herself back up to her feet. Looking around the small room again, she moseyed on over to one of the boxes, and lifted on of the flaps, curiously peering inside, hoping to find a rain jacket or something to use to keep her from shivering. "Wonder if they've got any coats in here.." she mused aloud, mostly to herself as a hand dove into the cardboard box and began to shuffle things about, digging lightly for something warm.
Then, looking back over to Karter, a tint of a worried expression crossed her face if only for a moment. "You don't.. think that storm will go on for too much longer, do you..?" If it lasted until the dark hours of the night, Heidi was certainly going to be in one hell of a ride.
