Major Explanation: Koalas feed on eucalyptus, a plant, and Jamie has always been interested in plants. He loves knowing how they get food, and he's always liked seeing the effects on plants on the diets of animals, especially koalas, and the environment.

• Solitary -- he doesn't need to rely on people for help too often.
  
• Harmless -- he couldn't hurt a fly, and neither can koalas. People love this about him because they never have to worry about being hurt my him, physically or emotionally.
  
• Balanced -- he's not a klutz whatsoever, and koalas rely on their balance to keep them in their trees.

As a koala, Jamie loves to climb. He's always loved climbing, ever since he was a little kid. He feels more free when he's up high, especially in a tree, and that's one reason he loves heights. He climbed his first tree at the age of three, and he has been hooked ever since.

Jamie is a vegetarian, and absolutely can't stand meat. He doesn't hate people that hate meat, but he usually feels closer to vegetarians. There are never very many choices for vegetarians at restaurants, weddings, etc., but Jamie can turn those choices into a thirty minute decision. He's very picky, especially when it comes to his food.

Jamie is very solitary, both as a koala and as a human. He's never really depended on anyone, and he's solitary for that reason, not that he would ever say no to company or friends. He has a hard time accepting help because of this, for he's used to doing things on his own.

Jamie has always felt close to nature, trees especially, and he loves to garden. People have told him that's it's weird, but he just ignores them. He takes pride in the fact that he's helping something grow from a tiny seed to a great plant that's able to produce it's food from carbon dioxide in the air.

He is sort of a pacifist, but not to where he won't fight at all. It's more so that he can't fight -- he's can't do martial arts, or defend himself really, he can't harm anybody, not even if he wanted to.

Jamie has never been a klutz. He's about the most coordinated person you could ever meet, and has never fallen down since he learned how to walk. He's extremely balanced and has never fallen out of a tree, either. On the other hand though, he is very slow. He's not fast at all, and couldn't run to save his life.

He hates people who don't recycle, because it's hugely inconsiderate to the environment. Parts of the environment are dying everyday, and there are still so many people who don't recycle. Those people really get on Jamie's nerves.
Jamie loves the night more than the day, because not only is it cooler on the hot summer days he usually loves, it's also part of his koala, because koalas are nocturnal.

He loves shifting, and couldn't imagine his life without it.

Jamie's eyes remain the same with both of his forms. They are a deep chocolate brown, and they reflect his hopes and dreams. If you look closely, if he lets you get close, that is, you can almost see exactly what he's thinking. He's eyes can also be described as the color of the tree bark he loves so much.
His hair is a brown as well. It's not quite a dark brown, but it's more of a mouse brown, that can sometimes look like an ashy blond, if the light hits it right. He usually keeps it short, but likes keeping it longer, layered, and styled more.

Jamie is about five feet and six inches tall, and weighs around one hundred and thirty pounds. Most of his weigh is muscle, which he retains when he shifts, so he can climb easier.
As a koala, his fur is ash grey, with tints of his human hair color in it.

His animal nose is pitch black, very important for telling the difference between leaves, and the color contrasts the white fur surrounding his big ears. Jamie as a koala weighs about twenty pounds.

Jamie's style is pretty relaxed, except for the fact that he almost always has a watch on. He usually wears jeans or shorts, because he can't stand dress pants unless absolutely necessary. He wears polo shirts often, and sometimes wears plaid long sleeved shirts and then rolls up the sleeves.
Jamie likes wearing Converse, and if he's not wearing those, he wears shoes he's able to climb in.

He can't stand wearing hats, especially fedoras. He likes to wear aviator sunglasses, especially if it's really sunny outside.
His skin is pretty tan from spending a lot of time outside, but not as tan as it could be, considering a lot of that time is spent under the protection of the trees.

Jamie's eyebrows are the exact color as his hair. He's lucky enough to have almost zero zits on his oval shaped face.
The top of his ears are at the height of his eyebrows, and the bottom of his ears are at the bottom of his nose.

Jamie's nose is naturally straight, and he has never broken it. He's teeth are straight as well, and he's never had to have braces. He brushes them every time after he eats, and they are very white.

Jamie looks almost exactly like his father, and as a koala, he wouldn't really stand out, but he wouldn't really blend in, either, just like Jamie among humans.

Marina and James mutually fell in love the day she shifted on her fourteenth birthday. They had been best friends since they were born, and James had been in love with her since he was five. He would follow her around like a puppy dog, plus they lived next door.
There parents had known each other since they were that age as well, and fully supported James' love of Marina. Marina's father was the only non-shifter, and everybody else waited in anticipation for the thirteenth birthdays of their children.
James didn't shift, not even on his twelfth or fourteenth birthdays. Marina was a late shifter, and on her fourteenth birthday, James had taken her to SeaWorld, on their first "non-date," and as they were watching Shamu, Marina fell into the pool, now a killer whale.

James was the only one who noticed, and after the show was over, he stayed until everyone was gone, collecting a sopping wet and scared Marina, giving her some extra clothes and towels he had thought to bring.

That was the first day Marina really noticed how caring James was. She kissed him on the bus ride home, and they planned to marry each other when they felt the time was right.

When that day came, the couple and the families were as happy as they could be. A while after the wedding, Marina was pregnant, and the families again started waiting in anticipation, yet again. The Martins were notorious bird shifters, and the Bakers were full of aquatic shifters.
When Jamie was born, all of his grandparents moved into the house. They watched him constantly, observing him, enrolling him in just about every extracurricular, seeing what talents he had.

All of them were befuddled when he showed an interest in climbing. They figured he was some type of bird, though, because he loved heights and hated water, but backed off a little when his sister was born.

Katherine was the pinnacle of little kid cuteness. She had blonde hair and blue eyes, an exact copy of their mom. They repeated the process of testing her likes and dislikes. They weren't exactly sure, and had trouble trying to determine what animal she was, just like with Jamie.

On Jamie's fourteenth birthday, the mystery was finally over. He shifted and was in the most pain he had been in, ten times the pain of a broken leg.

The weirdest part of it was feeling his ears enlarge. He was able to cringe through feeling his body shrink, his fingers change into claws, fur grow over his body, but he had a hard time dealing with his ears.

He had tackled Katherine, and James managed to get him off, thankful that koalas weren't meant to be fighters, and had Jamie try to destroy a pillow.

It was a hard time for Katherine, too, and to this day she is terrified of koalas, even though she still loves her brother.
They didn't send Jamie to the Academy immediately, for on the day Ursula and Wallace died, Katherine shifted.
Her shift was a penguin, and at the small funeral, she tried to peck out Rose's eyes. Rose fell backwards, trying to avoid Katherine's small beak, and hit her head on a tombstone, and was killed instantly.

The remaining Martins then saw that their kids needed a kind of stability that they couldn't provide, so they decided to send them to the place where they knew they could learn to manage their animals, Shifter Academy.
