LIGHT UP YOUR FACE WITH GLADNESSand hide every trace of sadness- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - There was little to do on an island in the middle of the summer. The beach got a little old after a while, and then what else was there to do? Nothing. Except mopping about town looking for someone to hang out with. Or maybe it was like this and Leena just couldn't take eating another peanut butter sandwich and decided to step out for a bite at the local restaurant. She could probably go to the kitchens somewhere and practice her cooking, but she much was in the mood to be lazy and have someone plop something on a plate for her.
She decided to just get up and walk out of her room throwing on a red stripped shirt, pair of shorts, and her very favorite vegetable shoes. On her way out Leena snatched up her ever faithful otter tote and made her way out the door. She walked down the streets of the island, her mind happily occupied with the bustlings of the island. It was summer time and the sun was warm on Leena's face, there really wasn't a care in her world. There was no need to study, no need to memorize recipes. Leena's mind was set on other things, like not worrying about stuff. So she smiled as she strolled down the street. Lots of people were out on such a sunny day and Leena was happy for it. She was not a very social person and had a problem with her self esteem... but hey. We all had our problems.
The sight of Yummy Tummies restaurant was a welcome one and Leena walked up to the door of the familiar building with a broad grin, happy heart, and empty stomach. She worked here last summer and knew the kitchen like the back of her hand. It was sort of nostalgic as she thought of the times she had here. The memories. It was all so grand! As she opened the door to her old home Leena took a deep breath of the old smell came back to her. Oh the restaurant. Leena looked around. There wasn't anyone that he could see. But perhaps it was because they had just opened up. It was only around eleven o'clock after all.
Leena moved toward the counter of the restaurant and sat at a bar stool. The sound of fresh coffee came to Leena's attention and she frowned a bit. Tea was her thing. After a few more moments a young boy walked up to her putting on an apron while the cook shooed him off to deal with customers. "Sorry miss, didn't know we'd be getting any customers this early. Whatcha fancyin?" He asked after straightening himself out and ended it with a well placed smile. She didn't recognize him, but it was expected that they would have new staff. So the idea of seeing an old friend quickly slipped out of her mind. She was still starving though. "Oh no, it's okay. I wasn't waiting long. I wanted half a shrimp poboy and a sweet tea please."
He nodded and winked. "Gotcha covered. Comes with fries too." Leena just nodded back with a smile and sat on her little red stool swinging back and forth like she used to as a kid. Her mind wandered as she waited for smile-and-nod waiter to come back with her food. There really wasn't much to do. Leena didn't have a very huge circle of friends. Just a few. She could never muter up enough courage to just talk with a stranger. However much that disappointed her incredibly social shift.
The otter was always in the mood for some good old fun with a big group of friends. Just laughing and playing. To bad. Leena kept spinning lightly now, her feet on the metal foot rest in front of them so she didn't turn around completely. just a little. Back and forth. Thats when the young boy returned with her food, golden and sitting on the familiar old white plates. "Here ya go. That's $6.50." She nodded, her brown hair moving softly against her shoulders. "Alright just a second..." Leena said as she lifted her camera wallet from that faithful tote bag. But as she unzipped the old thing a feeling like a rock was being dropped into her stomach came. Where was her credit card? After a few moments she remembered she had left it on the computer desk after ordering a new cook book.
Ah crap! Crap, crap, crap! This was quite embarrassing. "Sorry... I think I left my card at home. I should have some cash on me though." Her words were spoken apology dripping from each one, more along the lines of her running over his dog and having to tell him as opposed to the current circumstance. He still just nodded, with a bit more of an annoyed look on her face. Digging around in her wallet and bag Leena managed to come up with four dollars and fifty cents. She handed the cash over and hopped he wouldn't notice. He did of course. "You know you're about two dollars short here miss." He wasn't very amused and Leena's cheeks were redder than a tomato. "Oh, uhm, I..." She was a bit flustered to say the very least!

It was a hot, lazy day on the island. Mischa had run off to the beach and for once, Max didn't feel like cooking something. He was hungry after having his weekly (although out of his boredom, it was becoming an almost daily thing this summer) run, and he didn't want to have to wait for food, nor did he want to put much work into what he ate. But yet, he wanted good food, not cafeteria dorm food that was cooked en masse with tons of grease and little flavor. So, he headed to the Yummy Tummies Restaurant.
Max knew it was early, and wasn't sure if the restaurant would even be open at this time. After all, some restaurants closed for a chunk of the day before opening at around five o clock or so for dinner. He decided he'd head over anyway. Worst case scenario, he would have to walk back, hungrier than before, and snack on something while he waited for the water for the pasta he had in his dorm to boil.
On his way over, Max thought about what he was craving. Some meat perhaps? No. No meat. Meat was bad. What he was really craving was a huge steak with a side of pork chops or something but he wasn't going to give in to his red meat cravings. But he needed protein, so he figured he should probably try and eat SOME type of meat... he went through in his mind the menu he knew so well. Hot dog? Nope. That was red meat. Okay, how about chicken? No, he should have fish. Max loved seafood, so even if he were able to go vegetarian, he wouln't be able to give it up.
He finally settled on a chicken burger just as he entered through the door with a tinkle from the bells. He took a seat on one of the stools, not noticing who was on the other end of the bar until he heard the guy say that she was two dollars short.
"I have two dollars." He said, walking over, fishing them out of his pockets, and tossing them on the counter. He knew Leena was giving him the silent treatment, but hoped a good deed would get her to talk to him again.

LIGHT UP YOUR FACE WITH GLADNESSand hide every trace of sadness- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Leena was still fumbling over her words and trying to find an acceptable answer to the cashier when an all to familiar voice popped into her ears. "I have two dollars." Leena's big, brown eyes widened when that blast-from the past voice spoke. She turned her head slightly to see his face. Max looked so much different, and every time she saw him she felt a fire burning with hurt and remorse whenever she caught sight of him at school... or picking up her tab at a restaurant. You know. The usual.
She was so used to doing one thing whenever her eyes caught hi tall frame. And that was look the other way, talk off, and complain. They had been such close friends. Best friends. they used to know every single thing about each other, they would talk for hours, laugh, and play. But things changed whenever his mother died. Leena couldn't put two and two together, and assumed that whenever Max started to ignore her and everyone he had placed himself above everyone. Max had always been more outgoing than her, they balanced each other out. It was good. But she figured he had enough of her soft spoken tendencies. And what did Leena do about that!? Well. In the beginning; she cried. What would anyone else do when they lost their best friend? After that she drew into her little shell and the otter became restless.
Now he was here, right in front of her, doing a good deed. A friendly one. The little kid in Leena that had been pouting and giving Max the cold shoulder was fussing and yelling to continue the pointless plan. But the otter was saying something else. The otter looked at things basically, in the simplest of ways. Max was it's closest friend and best buddy. Considering how social otters are, he was important. And today, Leena sent the little, pouting kid inside of her into a corner, and let her shift's instincts take the reins. She was still better though. So it would be... interesting to say the least.
Leena turned her head and looked at Max for a moment. She just looked at him for a little bit. The waiter had taken the money, given the two of them a questioning look and walked back to the kitchen. She looked back to her food after a moment and pushed the plate in between the two of them a little grumpily. "Thank you. You didn't have to. But, fries. Uhm. I don't even like 'em. You can have those." He would have known that. They had eaten at enough restaurants and fat food joints for him to know that. If he remembered of course. And MAx wasn't into red meat anyway.
Her brown eyes glanced at him for a second before darting back to her food and pulling a fried shrimp out of the po-boy, popping it into her mouth. She kept her eyes on everything but Max's face for a while. Then finally she let her brown eyes land on his and she Tried very hard to offer him a smile. Well, that's a lie. She barely tried to offer him a smile and thats what came out. A rise of the corner of her lip for a split second and then it was gone. She could just picture this scene as if nothing had ever changed. She would joke around with him, laugh allot and it would end with a fit of giggles and a good conversation after it all. She silently wished it was that way agin. She hoped it could be like that someday.

Max prepared himself for yet another cold reaction. Perhaps if he was particularly unlucky, she would change her mind and order her food to go. Or she might grab everything and take it to a table, leaving Max alone at the bar. Max spent a few minutes considering the possibilities. He was so used to such treatment over the past three or four years, that he didn't even consider the possibility that she might be nice to him for once.
Thank you. You didn't have to. Max nodded his head. "No problem." he said simply. He grabbed a menu and scanned it, trying to decide what he wanted. He noticed that she wasn't moving from her spot, surprisingly. Had she decided to be more civilised?
But, fries. Uhm. I don't even like 'em. You can have those. Max couldn't help but let out a chuckle. He knew very well that she wasn't a fan of fries, and she knew very well that he loved them. His face cracked into a grin. "Thanks." he said, taking a seat at last, happy knowing that she was going to be nice to him, at least for today, hopefully for today onwards.
Max continued scanning the menu, peeking over at her just in time to see her return her eyes to her plate. He looked over at her for a moment, hoping she'd look back over at him, but no dice. He had come here intending on eating a chicken burger with all the fixings (since that's how he liked it) but since he had given two dollars to Leena's meal, he was a dollar short. So, he'd pick something else. He'd never admit this to Leena of course, and hoped that she wouldn't figure it out, given that she knew how often he ate chicken burgers here.
Max waited for the guy to come back. "I'll have a fish burger and a coke." he said, handing him the menu. The guy scribbled down his order and disappeared into the kitchen again. Max looked over at Leena. This time, she flashed him a small smile. He flashed her a smile in return. Silence. Max grabbed a fry and popped it into his mouth.
"Mmm, these are good... I still can't believe you don't like fries." he said, desparately trying to come up with something to talk about.

YAHTZEE!
A young child of one of the owners suddenly, in a tantrum, reaches into the ice cream window and begins to throw ice cream everywhere just as the hurricane begins to roar outside. Thunder and lightning are flaashing outside the window and ice cream is flying everywhere, nailing nearly everyone in sight.
Have fun. (:
