Brett had finished loading his tray with some of his favorites. Veggie burger, trail mix, apple, and a cookie in tote he was completely ready to eat. Brett looked guiltily down at the cookie momentarily. Being a nutrition major wasn't fun when you had to eat and you started counting serving sizes and calories in your head. Brett looked even more guiltily down at the bulge around his waist. The last thing he needed was extra fat or calories. It was kind of silly that one of the overweight guys on campus was a nutrition major. Brett shook his head to get out of his self-pitying funk. He didn't mind the fact he was overweight. He felt good and he only really started to hate himself for being heavyset when he was alone or other people didn't like him. When other more accepting people were around he had no problems with his self esteem.
Brett turned with his tray and faced the open area. The cafeteria wasn't all that crowded so late in the afternoon on a weekend, so Brett's options weren't that varied. After scanning the cafeteria a couple of times Brett didn't see anyone he really knew. He recognized a few people from his class but he didn't want to bug them. Seeing no other options Brett headed over to an empty table somewhat in the corner of the cafeteria, away from where most people already were. He wasn't being a loner, but if there was nobody to sit with he felt left out. He picked a bit at the veggie burger as he hoped someone else would come over and keep him company.
There wasn't many people that Brett felt comfortable around that would also want him around. But when he spied the telltale mohawk he couldn't resist waving Tokiie over. The Asian boy had Brett's full attention since the first time he met him. Brett had tried to be coy in hiding his crush but he was pretty sure the whole school knew. He felt his cheeks turn bright red as he realized how stupid he probably looked waving clear across the cafeteria trying to call over a friend. He gave a small bashful smile to try and hide his embarrassment and managed to stammer out a sentence. "Uh... hi... hi Tokiie," Brett stuttered. He was so utterly tongue tied around his crush it wasn't funny.
