"I'd actually prefer not to be the only one who talked….I lived in California before I came here. It was nice."
Virginia steadily began to loosen up. He wasn’t really a talker either, perhaps they had more in common than she had first thought. But most importantly, he didn’t seem to be at all aware of her secret, maybe she was good at this stupid lying thing. That made her feel guilty inside, it was a rotten feeling. She felt awful for lying to him and had the urge to some how make it up to him.
When he mentioned his intense love for fish her face lit up. It was a rare gesture for her to actually show true happiness. It stemmed from the fact that she actually saw a way she could be useful.
Swallowing another chip, she moved her fingers to play along the edge of the red basket. “Alright then. Fine. Then I insist.” She chose he words statically, using the same term he had used on her to make her eat the fries.
She pointedly pushed the basket dangerously close to him, taking her chips for herself. She sat back and propped her face up on her elbows, “so I guess if you don’t like talking, we’re a lot alike, I’m not really used to this.. ah, this sort of stuff.” what sort of stuff? Virginia pondered this silently while reaching her hand into the bag and selecting a nicely sized chip. Turning it in her fingertips she ended up by breaking it in two and eating each piece in turn.
“You said you were from California, right? My mama and papa used to live there… that’s where..” Virginia looked down at her ring with a small and sad smile. Twisting it so that the engraving was facing up she said in a small voice, ”That’s Julianne was born..”
Suddenly she realized what she was saying and began inwardly cursing herself for letting something like that slip, stupid, stupid, stupid!!! Her face twitched visibly, but she replaced it with a smile and prepared her lie, “She was my big sis, she was the only one who couldn’t shift in our family. She died in a..” Virginia’s voice caught, she felt hot pressure behind her eyes and the need to cry. No, she couldn’t allow that. She clasped her hands in her lap and studied them closely, “She died in an accident..” She muttered.
Taking a deep breath and a moment to compose herself , she sat straight again and smiled, “Eat that, please. “ She motioned to the basket. “I feel kinda sick, I don’t think I can..” That actually was true, lying about something like that made her feel sick to her stomach.
