Jayden smiled at Fidel and thought to himself, Well, we’ll have to remedy that situation, won’t we? Jay was sure that Fidel would get on with some of his friends, besides he couldn’t be that bad...could he? Seeds of doubt began to grow in Jayden’s mind about whether entering into a relationship you’d only just met was such a good idea, but he quickly brushed that thought away. The Otter was waiting to see what would happen. Jayden noticed that Fidel put the card in his pocket, but didn’t say anything. He was sure he’d get something of Fidel’s soon anyway.
Jayden was then thrilled when Fidel stated he wanted to learn sign language but his first word request was odd though. Most people go for ‘my name is so-and-so’ or ‘how are you?’ but Fidel certainly had to be different – his word request was ‘Fiddle’. Jayden thought about the sign for fiddle and then had it. He went to his bed and patted the spot beside him. He then had to think of the word and the sign. Using signs he rarely used was always a tough sign to remember. Though, from now on, Jay would be remembering a lot of old signs that he hadn’t used for a while, as not only was he teaching Fidel, but he was teaching Roxxi, Allie and Ryland now too, which was fun. They were fast learners. Jay decided that he’d have a group session soon. It’d be good for people to know one another, after all. Or maybe they already did each other – he wouldn’t be surprised if they did – but he’d have a group session anyway.
Once his new roommate....and whatever else he was now, was sitting next to him, Jayden smiled at him and gently took his hands, trying to mimic the sign but he totally messed it up and so had to stop and start again, this time actually showing Fidel the sign, repeating it three times, slowly. He hoped that Fidel was a fast learner. Oh, that reminded Jay – he needed to give Fidel “homework”, depending on how he looked at it. He gestured for Fidel to keep practicing the sign while he wrote something down on the card.
I'm gonna get you pieces of paper with different signs on them and I would like you to learn them off by heart. We will then have a test to see how much you have remembered in a fortnight.

Fidel couldn't help but feel sad for some reason. he knew he really like Jaden, and he also knew Jayden liked him. But what worried him was the question of 'how long'? How long would they be together if they just flung themselves into a relationship? Fidel was well aware that it wouldn't be too long, that he was absolutely positive of. Although he had a hard time admitting it, Fidel recognized how much of a pain-in-the-neck he could be. If things went the way they usually did, he'd be defenestrated by the end of the month. He silently wondered if Jay would be able to stick around enough to get to know him. As much as it hurt him to think it, he doubted it. But maybe.. just maybe.
He broke from his melancholy thinking when he noticed Jay patting the space on the bed next to hi,. His heart jumped and fluttered, it was similar to the feeling of a parent holding down a cookie jar to a young boy and telling him to pick whatever he wanted. Except it was whole lot sweeter. It was that feeling of not needing to steal, steal a glance or maybe even a kiss. He didn't have to hide. For his inner animal, being offered the chance to be open and not needing to sneak about was a rare treat.
He sat beside his, his breath catching when Jayden took his hands and positioned them. He allowed him to do what he liked, giving a nervous chuckle and muttering, "Sorry,"
His left elbow was angled sharply with his hand out flat, Jayden curled his fingers inwards but kept the hand flat. Taking his other arm he positioned it at about a 90 degree angle and a fist at the hand, so he appeared to be grasping something. Fidel's stomach got all jumpy at his roommate's/crush's/lover's or what-ever-the-hell he was's closeness, but he controlled himself so he could learn the move. It ended badly, he could tell by the expression on Jay's face.
The mute released him and demonstrated the move himself. A smile grew on Fidel's face. It was an easy enough move! It resembled the movement of a bow across a violin, or rather, a fiddle in this case. A simple motion of pulling a bow across strings three times. He figured 'violin' would be the same thing. He laughed and practiced the sign, even humming a few notes to accompany his "air fiddle" as Jayden wrote down his homework on another card.

Jayden smiled and gave a little chuckle at Fidel’s signing skills. He was a fast learner after all. Once Jayden had checked the message twice just to make sure that there weren’t any spelling errors, he showed his roommate. Jay was a stickler for spelling and grammar – he hated bad spelling and whatnot. He knew some people had dyslexia so they were excused but other people, there was no excuse for them – unless they hadn’t been taught how to read or write. The mute boy hoped that Fidel didn’t mind having “homework”. He had done the same thing with the others so in his mind, Fidel was no different. Jay also believed that having “homework” and practicing it helped a lot.
Jayden then had an idea. He smiled at Fidel mischievously and then sat down beside him, giving him a quick peck on the cheek as he did so. He then got a card out of his bag and showed the card with a roguish grin.
I am going to get you guess what I'm signing, ok? It’ll be fun and interesting to see how much you can guess accurately.[/b]
Jayden smiled and rubbed his hands before thinking of some very basic phrases. He would give some time for Fidel to guess the signs. Oh! He forgot to give the new roommate/his new crush/whatever he was now a notepad so that he could write his guesses down. He sprang off the bed and was about to get the notepad when he tripped over a bag and fell over. He looked down, frowned and gave the bag a little kick. He knew that Fidel would want to pick him up so he leapt off the floor, smiled and gave a thumbs-up. He then reached over and got the notepad and chucked it at Fidel. As an after-thought, Jayden moved the bag somewhere else so it wouldn’t be in the way. He sat beside Fidel, smiling a little shyly. Wow, this wasn’t awkward at all!
Focus![/i]
He mentally shook himself and got into teacher mode. Immediately the small, hands began a small graceful dance, slowed down so that Fidel could see the action.
<<My name is Jayden>>
Jay did the same phrase twice, before waiting for the new roommate to write the guessed phrase down.
<<I like you – maybe we should date>>
At the second phrase, Jay gave a secret sly smile and then waited for Fidel to guess the second phrase.[/size]

Fidel stopped signing 'fiddle' long enough to take the card and read some of the signs. Fidel, frowned, he hated homework. He took every opportunity he could to avoid doing what his teachers assigned.
But this.. this was different. He had an incredible chance now, not only to form a relationship, but also to learn a new form of expression. That made him smile a bit, maybe this would turn out as a good thing. Perhaps he could even teach it to some of the kitchen team. The kitchens would always get really noisy, sometimes stupid mistakes would be made because of of too, perhaps if some of the noise was eliminated thing could get finished faster and more effectively. Plus it might make Jayden happy, and that was now the first priority.
Fidel felt Jay's lips brush against his cheek, and his face burned scarlet. He took the card, trying to steady his hand and debating inwardly wether or not to return the affectionate move. He read the card and slapped a hand over his face, laughing and tilting it back slightly. "You really like these games, don't you?" He looked down and grinned wide, "I don't think i'll be very good at it, but I'll try!"
Jay jumped off the bed and was about to reach for his bag when he tripped and fell. tumbling on the floor. Fidel stood up quickly, his face painted with concern and made a few steps to try and help him up. But just as swiftly as he was down he was back up and smiling broader than ever. Fidel returned the grin and sat back down. The notepad came flying at him from seemingly no where, it pegged him in the shoulder. Fidel made a mock hurt face making a show of rubbing his shoulder, "Careful! I'm breakable, didn't you know?"
He flipped to the first page and snatched a nearby pencil, positing it to hover over the paper. Jayden preformed the first series of signs. Flat hand on chest just below the neck, then the index and pointed finger of both hands tapped eachother, then there was a series of six movements on one hand.
"I am an otter" Fidel wrote down his guess, he was stuck between 'my name is Jayden' and that one. He hought for a bit then scratched it out and wrote down his other guess, 'otter' probably would have been a less complicated sign.. right?
He looked up, indicating he was ready for the next sign. Jay pointed to himself, then made a fist at his mouth and appeared to be kissing the back of his hand as he pulled it away. There was a bit of a pause, then the hands alternated going up and down, palms up. Fidel noted the quizzical expression on Jay's face. He pointed to one shoulder and drew his finger in a semi-circle to the other shoulder, followed soon after by the same finger slightly crooked dipping down twice. Finally he used touched every finger excepting his pointer fingers to his thumb and tapped them together.
Fidel pursed his lips and watched him repeat the move. The ending one, for some reason seemed like 'kiss'.. maybe not, the word 'kiss' would have to do with the lips, right? Perhaps the phrase was, "Should we kiss?" An impish smile grew on his face and he wrote the words down. It probably wasn't right, but he had already made up his mind on what to do. As soon as he handed the card over, he leaned over and gently pressed his lips against Jay's, holding himself there for a few moments before pulling away, chuckling and saying, "I hope I didn't get that one wrong!"

When Jayden lobbed the notepad at Fidel, the other boy teased him by he was breakable. Jayden merely silently chuckled however and came to sat down. When he had done all the signing, he waited for Fidel to hand him the notepad but when he got the notepad, he got a little something extra in the form of a brief kiss on the lips. He smirked as they kissed.
I hope I didn’t get that one wrong
Jayden smiled and blushed. He then looked at the phrases, the last one making him silently chuckle. Oh, he was so cute! Jayden wished that what Fidel was correct – he was cute but that wasn’t the point of learning to sign. In order to sign properly, Fidel would need to learn how to sign properly and that meant having to learn these phrases properly – without fail. Jayden was a harsh teacher when it came to sign language – Fidel would realise that soon enough, plus he could always Roxxi, Ryland and Allie. He just hoped that Fidel would be around for Jay to teach him some of the more complex phrases – there were signs that Fidel wouldn’t think even existed.
The mute Otter boy scribbled the answers down and then passed the notepad t his roommate, hoping that he wouldn’t be too disappointed by the answers. To be honest, Jayden wasn’t expecting instant results from his signing sessions – no one got them instantly unless they were a fast learner or had a high IQ, like Jayden of course.
The answer read:
oh-oh-oh, not quite, Mister. The first one was almost right – I said ‘My name is Jayden’ and the second one...well...it was....it was ‘would you like to date me? Thanks for the surprise kiss just now.
Jayden then remembered something. He had been given a book by a deceased Aunt, who wasn’t an Aunt at all but was actually a long distance relative. The book was a beginner’s guide to Sign Language. Jay didn’t know why he hadn’t thought of that earlier, it would’ve saved him so much trouble. He jumped from the bed and went to where the book was, once again tripping over in excitement. Silently moaning in frustration, Jay got up and delved into his pile of folders and books – some of it for school, some of it for personal entertainment and intellectual knowledge. Oh where was it? Oh, there it was! Again, Jay lobbed it at Fidel and appeared, smiling. He then sat down, waiting for Fidel to look at it.

That small blush and smile gave him hope that it had been right. He held his breath as Jay checked the answers. He was unsure if Jay's small laugh was an indication of wether or not her was right or wrong. He was more than ready to look at the answers when Jay handed them over.
"oh-oh-oh, not quite, Mister." Fidel's eyes widened.. "Oh dear.." He voiced aloud. But was reassured with the next phrase, ". The first one was almost right – I said ‘My name is Jayden’ " He looked up smiled and nodded approvingly. But reading on, he felt his cheeks steadily redden until his face was burning. So, he was wrong. What he had signed was much more exciting than just "should we kiss", he wanted a relationship.
Fidel swallowed hard and opened his mouth to make a reply, but closed it again, not really knowing just the right words to say. He had had relationship with girls before, but those had always ended poorly because of their shallowness. Even if they were good for a long time and the girl was able to put up with the raccoon shift, eventually Fidel would get bored of her. He couldn't explain why, but eventually his attraction to females in their infinite games and guile dwindled to very little. He recognized this detachment easily and accepted it, perhaps he just wasn't good with girls. But what about guys? He had never seriously considered the idea, though he was always open to it, he had been convinced that there was no one else in the world like him. Now here he had a chance. He felt a lump grow in his throat and his eyes burned, he felt like he wanted to cry.
He wanted this, he wanted badly to be loved again. But if it turned out like it did with most girls, it wouldn't be too long before he was alone again. This time, he needed to use his self-control, take his time and go slow. The Raccoon grudgingly agreed, but was quick to remind him that kissing within the first twenty minutes of the first meeting definitely wasn't 'slow'.
Fidel rubbed at his eyes, "Jayden.. I--" He looked up to see the space where Jay once was now empty. He felt a mild panic, but was brought out of it when he heard the slight thump of Jay once again tripping over his books. Fidel turned to get a better look, "Hey you're not going to throw anything at-- whoa!"
Although just barely, Fidel managed to catch the volume. He laughed in spite of himself at his own clumsiness and read the cover aloud. "American Sign language for the Beginner." He lifted the cover and thumbed through a few pages. It appeared to be consisting of pictures of hands making various signs, some had pictures of a grinning woman with a poofy 80's-esque hair style making gestures. He flipped through the pages, "This is great Jay! Really great!" He looked up with a genuine grin plastered all over his features. He closed the book and set it down. His face grew serious again, he looked at Jayden with a mixture sadness and hope trying to gather up his courage for his next words, "Jay? Were you serious? Would you like to date me?" He studied his face and waited for an answer, " Don't write it down. Sign it to me."

"This is great Jay! Really great!"
Jayden smiled when Fidel sad that. Why hadn’t he given this copy to the others before? It would have been useful for them. He could always buy other copies – maybe better copies later on. The book was probably outdated by now and there may be some new signs that Jay himself didn’t know about. When Jay was asked if he was serious about dating the other boy his smile gradually faded and he looked down for a moment. He liked this boy – he was one of the few people that Jay actually liked romantically. He wanted to take it slow and see what would happen, though he couldn’t really take it slowly now, could he? He had kissed Fidel several times now already so that definitely wasn’t going slow. He looked to Fidel once more, the guy need an answer, now.
Just as he was about to get the pad, he was stopped and asked to sign out his answer. Jayden blinked, a little surprised by the request. Fidel wouldn’t be able to understand the answer. The new roommate virtually next to no sign language, then again, now that he had the book, the mute boy supposed he could see the signs and then look them up. The mute boy would uphold the cute boy’s request and sign his answer out. The mute boy decided to really slow down his hands so that his new roommate/crush/whatever the hell he was now could understand him.
<<Yes, I do. If that’s ok, of course>>
Jayden’s hands stopped dancing and the mute boy waited for Fidel’s answer. He wondered if he would use the book to help him sign. Is that why he had asked Jayden to use sign language – so that he could answer him back in sign language? If that was the case then Jayden was impressed. The mute boy wondered what the other boy would say. In nervousness, the small Otter boy wrung his hands and got up. He walked to the desk and looked through his bag, just idly shuffling the cards, anxiety eating him from the inside. Otter snorted in disgust. This was just one boy. There were many people who were cute or intelligent – why go after this one? Jayden looked at shock at the Otter and gave him a glare. The Otter and the boy gazed at one another stormily before the Otter yielded. Jay waited for Fidel’s answer.

Fidel propped his chin up on the heel of his right hand, fitting his elbow into the small dip created by the wrist of his left arm, which was arranged neatly across his lap. His middle and pointer finger alternated tapping nervously yet discreetly on his lower lip. It didn’t feel right to force an answer like this; it sort of made him want to turn away and just say ‘Never mind’. He just wanted to know. Was this something serious? Or was it just some stupid prank? Maybe Jay was a friend of those guys in the other dorm and they were using him to pull some sort of sick practical joke as revenge. Except this was alot worse, not only was his reputation possibly on the line, but also his feelings. It felt like a huge gamble, but there was a possibility.
For example, when they had kissed, Jay genuinely looked happy. That had to mean something right? For a moment, Fidel felt scared. He then figured he was probably just over thinking it and attempted to shrug it off. The Raccoon’s thoughts followed a simpler line. It seemed to be doing acrobatics again causing his stomach to churn and flutter and his hear to beat fast and tamper off only to come back with more gusto. The Raccoon seemed really excited and generally positive.
It was a lot to feel all at once, too much to think off al in the moment. Like papers fluttering down from the air. Fidel could only pin down a few rational thoughts. Nevertheless, he kept his eyes of Jay and offered a weak but reassuring smile through his drumming fingers, desperately trying not to give away his inner turmoil.
He dropped his hand as Jay lifted his and began to sign. The Greek teen steepled his fingers and fixed his attention on the hands as they slowly began to move, memorizing each movement. It stared with the right hand making a down ward knocking motion- the same sort of motion a head would make if it was nodding- followed by a quick motion towards himself then both hands, with fingers splayed and palms downward creating a side to side sweeping movement. Fidel figured he could probably guess it, but the next few movements were slightly more complicated.
As Jay stood, Fidel leaned back a little and looked up at the dull ceiling, going back over what he had seen. He placed a hand to support himself. As he did so, his pinky brushed the spine of the Sign Language book. He looked at it, blinked, and picked it up. He ran his hand lightly over the green cover, was it really that easy? He opened to the first page and skipped over the introduction until he reached the basics. At the bottom of the page he located an illustration of a hand making a first and two arrows indicating a downward motion. Beside the visual aid was the word ‘yes’ with a few instructions. Fidel’s breath caught for a moment, he didn’t bother to look up the rest, he’d have time for that later. Instead, he flipped through the pages until he found the phrase he was looking for. He practiced it a few times, keeping his back to Jayden so he wouldn’t see, then stood and raised his hands.
<<That’s great>>
It was simple, but he meant it.
He dropped his arms, and stood sheepishly shuffling his feet, hoping he hadn’t signed something weird like ‘duck feet’, or ‘cucumber hats’. That would have been severely embarrassing. He risked a glance at the Otter shifter, waiting for a reaction. “Sorry..” he mumbled.

After having silenced the Otter, Jayden turned around, cards in hands. He was just passing the time until Fidel answered him. The mute boy leant on the desk, right leg crossed over his left leg. In a way the Otter was right – why was one guy so different from the rest? Jayden didn’t have an answer but he felt something different about Fidel. Felix had been a good boyfriend and they had ended on good terms but...Jay didn’t know what had happened but he now felt like ending it with Felix was a good choice. Jayden wasn’t the cheating type and never would be, hopefully anyway.
He could see Fidel in the corner of his eyes and looked up when Fidel turned to face the mute Otter boy. What Fidel signed made Jayden extremely happy. It was like someone had told him that his writing had been selected for a competition and that he was one of the very few who made it to top 20. He flung his cards on the table, not caring that some had fallen down on the floor, ran to Fidel and leapt on him, knocking the book out of his hand. In the process of jumping on Fidel, Jay had pushed Fidel to lie on his back. The mute boy lowered his face and proceeded to lay a series of kisses on Fidel face and neck. Next, he sat back up and looked at Fidel, with a small smirk on his young features. His eyes were mischievous and he refused to get off of Fidel, in which case the Raccoon would have to make him move, which would be very fun to watch. He bent down and placed another kiss on Fidel’s lips. He sat up again. He knew where this could lead to if not dealt with properly and Jay wasn’t sure he was ready for that yet.
Jayden stretched, revealing the toned abs once more. just as quickly he had got on Fidel, the mute boy quickly got off his new roommate. He was in the chair, his face slightly nervous of what he had just done. Had he been going too fast with that sudden display of affection? Maybe he had ruined the moment. The Otter smirked at this, causing Jayden become annoyed at the Otter. Having an inner animal was annoying at times. They liked to contradict you at the worst possible time. He silently sighed, thinking things through.

As Fidel saw it, the gesture of Jay dropping his cards and running at him could have meant one of two things. One, that he had done it correctly and his new roommate was just a bit excited. Or, two, that he had done it totally wrong and signed something like 'You're a goat' and Jay was about to break his neck. Well, figuratively of course. Either way, Fidel braced. It did little good, Jay lept on him, causing them both to fall on the floor. The sign language book fell and Fidel's hat was knocked off and sent skittering along the floor. He was quite surprised to find Jay on top of him, but he wasn't just on him, Jay was holding him down. He was so shirt, it came as a startle to Fidel that he was so strong. Had he been standing up, perhaps Fidel might have been able to defend himself. But if Jay had the plan to beat him up, this would be the way to do it.
Fortunately, everything turned out just right. The first few kisses landed on his neck, lower and and near his collarbone then began to work up, most of them falling at random. His heart beat was going nuts he simply didn't know what to do. He supposed he could count himself as lucky, considering his erogenous zone was on his lower legs. If people knew that, it wouldn't take much to make him melt. He could handle kissing, but from Jay? Not so much. When the smaller boy leaned back to grin at him, Fidel realized he wasn't breathing. He opened his mouth just a bit in his shock, only to have it covered by Jay's.
"Mph!" Fidel couldn't process quite what was going on. Was this Jay's way of saying 'we're an item now'? If so, he liked it, and in no time at all he found himself kissing back. All of this was much to the excitement of the Raccoon. It was weird being the 'kissed' in this situation for Fidel. He was used to being the aggressor. But twice now, Jay had both proposed the idea of starting a relationship and now this. The raccoon shift figured he'd have to make it up somehow. He didn't get the chance this time around.
The pressure of Jayden's body left his chest. Fidel found could only lay on the floor for a few moments, completely unable to move. Even the Raccoon was shocked by the sudden display of affection. Gradually, he pushed himself up on his elbows then got to his feet. He smoothed his hair back, noticing the sudden absence of his hat. He took a few steps towards where Jay was sitting and put his hands on the back of the chair. He leaned in closely to Jayden's ear. His mind was working fast, "I'm happy." he said simply and placed a soft kiss on his jaw, just beneath the ear.

Jayden watched as Fidel eventually got up and came over to him. The small Otter boy gave a knowing smirk. He had an idea as to what Fidel would do – it would involve a kiss of some sort, and he was proven correct. Fidel kissed him on the jaw, making Jayden’s knowing smirk become wider. Well now, this would be an interesting relationship, and most certainly a very passionate one if things were going to be like this, which Jay liked. He looked at his new roommate and smiled, getting a card from the pile. He briefly looked at the card, satisfied that he had picked up the right one.
Guess this means we’re dating then. Look forward to having you as a boyfriend. By the way, you’re a good kisser
He put the card back on the table and put his hands on Fidel’s bare skin and kissed him. However, if Fidel did anything to him or his friends, then he’d find himself mauled. Jay wouldn’t tell him that though, Fidel would find that out for himself sooner or later. Right now though, the mute Otter boy would allow Fidel to enjoy his time with his new beau. Jayden liked Fidel and he hoped that the feeling would stay be reciprocated. The mute boy then took his hands out from under Fidel’s t-shirt and hugged him tightly. Now that they were an item – or rather, he thought they were an item – Jayden wanted to make sure that Fidel knew how much the mute boy liked him. That this feeling he had wasn’t just lust but love, and that he’d be there for Fidel, for as long as their relationship lasted. He made sure to put all that in the hug. He wanted Fidel to understand it.
Bleep, bleep! Bleep, bleep
Jayden’s alarm on his phone sounded, making him jump. He had completely forgot about that. Gently untangling himself from Fidel, Jayden was up and behind his new beau within a minute. Jay spun Fidel round and sat him down in the chair. Due to his size, speediness was one Jayden’s many companions. Jayden thought that if you were small, speed and small stature were good assets to have when in a fight, sometimes enabling you to win the fight.
I promised a friend I’d see them now. Sorry to be a buzzkill. Will be back later
Jay quickly pecked Fidel on the cheek, grabbing his things, stuffing his cards into the bag, and dashed out.

Jay's hands were cold on his skin, they sent chills up Fidel's spine. Fidel realized that Jayden would probably have no problem at all bending him to his will. It was pretty much guaranteed that he was going to become the mute boy's bitch. But for once in his life, Fidel didn't care. He just wanted to love this person as much as he could for as long as he could. What was the term Jay had used? Boyfriend. He liked that idea, not only being the boyfriend, but having one too.
The hands left his skin and arms wrapped around his waist. Fidel looked down at the boy, a smile grew across his features. Not just on his lips but in his eyes. It mirrored the warmness that spread from his chest threw his body. He wrapped his own arms around Jay's shoulders, and rested his cheek against his soft brown hair. He set up a slow hum, it was mostly tuneless but could be best described as 'content'. How lucky he was, at that moment he promised himself that he would treasure this person for as long as he had him.
There was a small beeping noise from the table, Jay jumped which made Fidel jump. The only difference was that when Fidel jumped, he pulled his arms away and accidentally smacked the metal part of the chair with his elbow. He bit his lip and grimaced. Not doing anything as Jay forced him into the chair. He flashed him the card and Fidel visibly deflated,
I promised a friend I’d see them now. Sorry to be a buzzkill. Will be back later
But before he could saw anything else, Jayden was gone. Just as quickly as he had come into his life he was out the door. Fidel frowned then smiled a bit. "I'm so lucky." he said to himself softly. "Jayden."
He stood, rubbing his elbow. He looked around the room. Nothing was really of interest to him right now. His heart began to calm down, and the Raccoon seemed to me happy with the outcome of their first meeting. Fidel touched his hair again.. no hat. Bending over he took it from the floor and brushed it off. Finding nothing else to do he jumped on his bed and rolled to face up at the ceiling. He looked to see the crystal otter still sitting where Jay had placed it. He was completely, totally , and irrevocably twitterpated.
He set to humming again and in no time was asleep.
