Calista wondered if this was how Ariel felt as a mermaid...the freedom, the water surrounding her, the wonderful feeling of just swimming, and then thought she was crazy for abandoning...and for a guy, no less!
She was home, she forgot about Melany, forgot about the hurricane, but there was that little voice in the back of her head, telling her to remember. But remember what? Oh yeah, that she was human. It was hard for her to remember that when she was an octopus, the instinct was just to swim, to swim and nothing else, and the ocean was perfect enough to make her not want to go back to the human world.
But, boy oh boy, was that voice annoying! Even at her happiest, it was there. It sounded a lot like her dad, the dad she hadn't seen since she was a toddler, her human self missed him, but with the bubbles, and the way it felt to move through the water, the way it felt to not need air, it was hard to listen to anything but the sea.
Calista looked up, her octopus eyes seeing through the water, seeing the fish swimming happily around her, and her gaze caught something that looked like driftwood being tossed around by the waves. Driftwood...what did that remind her of?
It all came back, the surfing, the hurricane...crap! Where was Melany? Calista turned her body around, looking for anything human looking, but what if she had shifted? She didn't know what kind of animal she was, Melany could be a piece of shrimp for all she knew! And then there were the possibilities if she didn't shift...drowning, and sharks, and...
Oh, God.
Eight arms immediately propelled herself forward, and Calista was desperate to find Melany. She didn't know where to look, the ocean was so huge! And the driftwood had obviously been battered by the waves for a while before Calista had seen it.
Calista felt her skin change color, she wasn't sure what it looked like, but there weren't many rocks for her to blend in with. Calista was tiring fast, she needed to find Melany, then she needed to rest, lounge on a rock and just wait out the storm.
At last! Her eyes caught something, but it didn't look good. White teeth, big gray body, helpless sea turtle. Sharks, bleck. Bullies of the ocean. But they terrified her, nonetheless. Yes, she wanted to help the sea turtle, she was that kind of person, but she wasn't going to chance getting eaten by a shark. The octopus squirted its ink in fear while trying to get away, making her unable to see the shark. She hid behind some rocks, her eyes on the situation, making sure that the shark stayed where it was.
Holy crap, that beast was scary. [/blockquote] {Tag: Melany. Word count: 471. Notes: Eh, not my best post. Clothes: N/A.}

Melany was looking at the teeth, and then she looked at the giant shark they were connected to. She loved the ocean, loved the feeling of it…but sometimes she forgot of the threats that were just beneath the surface. She felt herself shake with fear. She wondered why she didn’t have some sort of “turtle instinct” that would have alerted her to there being a shark nearby. She wondered why she didn’t notice that all the other fish had swam away. She began to blame herself. She was mad that she hadn’t noticed all the fish were gone, that she had been enjoying the way the ocean felt.
She was mad at herself, but scared for her life at the same time. The shark wasn’t exactly right in her face, but it wasn’t far away either. She felt herself shudder, she was scared.
She began to slowly swim backwards, keeping her eye on the shark and all of its teeth. With every few inches she moved back, the shark moved forward. She was scared out of her mind; she didn’t know what to do. She didn’t think she had any turtle instincts, and she didn’t know what a real turtle would do in that situation.
The shark kept getting closer and closer, she guessed it was trying to play with her before it ate her. She gulped, not wanting to die. She didn’t care if she was being dramatic at this point, there was a shark not ten feet away from her, and she was just a turtle…an easily digestible turtle.
The shark was just about to swim closer and easily bite Melany in half, when a screen of ink covered his vision. It was like a wall, and Melany knew, if she wanted to get away from the shark, she had to move quickly.
She swam as fast as she could away from the ink and the shark, and hid behind a rock that was big enough to cover her. She felt like her heart was about to jump out of her chest. She had never been so frightened in her entire life. She had never been as close to death in her entire life.
Melany could feel herself shaking, even though she was now safe behind the rock. Even though the ink had cleared, and the shark was confused. She was still shaking. She figured it was her instincts kicking it too late; the urge she felt to run and hide was stronger than ever.
She peeked from behind the rock, and saw the shark swimming in the other direction, confused. She let out a breath she hadn’t noticed she had been holding, and relaxed a little. She was safe, thanks to…to what? Some ink? She looked around; trying to find what had caused the ink screen that passed between her and the shark.
That’s when Melany saw the octopus that was hiding next to her. She figured that it had gotten scared when it saw the shark too, and had “inked” in just the right spot and right speed to get in the way of the shark.
Melany looked at the octopus, at her life saver, and smiled…well smiled as much as a turtle could…so, she mainly just smiled with her eyes.

Calista tried to calm down as she hid behind the rocks, but with the shark right there, it was hard, to even think about being calm, especially considering an octopus would probably be tastier to it than if she was human. Her heart was pumping, it was out of control, it was beating faster than an airplane could fly. The fear was all consuming, she couldn't focus on anything else but the feeling of adrenaline, the thought of, I could die here. If she had been human, she probably would have cried at the thought. Her dreams would never be fulfilled, but she didn't know if an octopus could even cry.
Her fear was interrupted by the feeling of something by her. She panicked, and she could feel herself changing the pigmentation of her skin, but she stopped abruptly when she saw it was just a sea turtle. The sea turtle facing the shark? Was it? It looked extremely similar, and Calista looked over the rocks, and a wave of relief swept over her when she saw that the shark was swimming away. She knew her ink had something to do with it, wild octopus did used their ink like that frequently to avoid being eaten, she just didn't know what to think. Had she saved this turtle's life? If she had, that was great, but the thought was...frightening. Had this turtle's life been in her hands...er, arms? Would this turtle be dead if it weren't for her? She wasn't sure, she tried not to focus on it, and turned her attention to the sea turtle instead.
The turtle was pretty, but then again, most marine mammals were amazing, at least to Calista. But there was something different about, something about it's eyes; it looked like it was smiling. Could turtles smile? She wasn't sure, but there was something...human about it. The color of the eyes most likely, for it looked familiar, it looked like she'd seen those eyes before.
That was it! She had seen those eyes before, or at least eyes that were eerily similar, on Melany. Was Melany's shift a sea turtle? Possible. She seemed to love water like only an aquatic shift could. But was it her? Calista wasn't sure for once, and for an intelligent person, that was a horrible feeling. The feeling of not knowing, of being blind to what was right in front of you. They were safe for now though, and that was enough to set her a little at ease.
But something didn't feel right to Calista. She wasn't sure what it was, but it was like she was burning, and she realized the feeling of shifting back to a human. No!, she thought. There was no way she could hold her breath long enough to even swim to the surface, and if she tried, the shark would probably see her, and then it might come after her. Panic was rising in her throat as she felt her hair fall on her human shoulders, felt her legs kick automatically. And then the burning feeling was back, and her bones were popping again, and she was an octopus before she knew it. Calista felt like hyperventilating with the fear and relief of the situation.
What just happened? she thought. {Tag: Melany. Notes: I actually kind of like this post ;D Clothes: N/A. Word count: 547}

Melany was smiling as much as a turtle could; she was smiling with her eyes at the octopus that had saved her life. She couldn’t help but think that there was something a little different about that octopus, something…not octopus like. She noticed a hint of…familiarity in the octopus’s eyes. Melany wanted to ignore it; she wanted to pretend that she didn’t have that thought….that thought that the octopus was human.
That was when the octopus had a look of panic in its eyes, and then Calista was in front of Melany instead of the octopus. She felt her eyes drop their smile and get huge with the realization of what had just happened. Calista had shifted, right in front of her…and the look of panic before was that she hadn’t tried to do it, which scared Melany. She thought Calista would know more about shifting than her, but seeing her like that, made Melany realize how scary shifting really was.
Suddenly Melany didn’t want to be a turtle, it may have been the safest place during the storm, but that shark was still swimming around somewhere. She didn’t know how to shift back; she didn’t even really know how she had shifted in the first place. Marissa had wanted to teach her how to control her shifting better, but Melany had refused, too scared.
But she was even more scared in the situation she was in. As far as she was concerned, she was stuck as a turtle. She didn’t know how to shift back, and she wasn’t one hundred percent sure that shark wouldn’t come back. She wasn’t even sure there weren’t any more sharks around. If she was human, she would have pulled her knees to her chest and tried to think of a logical way out of the situation.
But she wasn’t a human.
She was a turtle, and she was too panicked to try to think of how to logically get out of the situation. She looked above her, and she could see that Calista wasn’t to the surface. Seeing her brought Melany back to herself, and, before she knew it, she was hurtling herself toward Calista. She quickly swam to her new friend, and pushed against her bare back, trying to help them both to the surface. Melany knew that Calista would run out of air soon, and she didn’t want that to happen. Melany also knew that, as a turtle, she would be fine without air for a while longer, she just wanted Calista to get to the surface.
