- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Skyler walked through the forest. It was almost midnight; and her roommates were probably a sleep. She really didn’t know because she hasn’t been in the dorms sense the sun was up. Skyler had been roaming the campus; going place to place. She had been to the library earlier and had taken out a book she didn’t have time to finish. Skyler later on the day went to the greenhouse to sketch some of the flowers there. Then she had went to the lounge to just relax and listen to music she had also read some of her book here as well. Skyler had met one person; he seemed nice but Skyler knew better then to let first impressions get to her.
Skyler look around her there was no one out here. She had liked this thought and didn’t want anything to get in the way of that thought. Skyler had good night vision; yet there was the whole her being far-sighted. Skyler walked through the forest; she wasn’t sure where to go this was the first time she had been out here. Skyler could see the light from the moon filtering through the branches of the trees. This gave her more light to see and didn’t make to as dark as it could have been. Skyler stopped walking and looked up at the night sky. She couldn’t see much through the branches; which she kind of hated because she loved to look at the moon.
Skyler looked around her she saw bunches of bushes and trees. She wondered if she would be able to remember the way back. Skyler looked behind her and shrugged that was something she would think about when she was ready to head back. The skunk in her wanted to smell for prey, mice, small birds, anything she could get her hands on and something the skunk would like. Of course Skyler pushed back the thought about shifting; and left the skunk inside her to pout. Skyler breathed in deeply, soaking up the scents around her. There wasn’t much for her to smell, it was just the usual smells of the forest. All the prey in the forest would be deep in their homes sleeping.
Skyler walked through the forest once more. Skyler thought about the forest how it was one with nature and nothing man could do would change that. This made her think about man itself and the world she lived in. This world it existed only out of emotions; this is how she saw it. Skyler thought that the world, no people and the world wouldn’t be able to live without emotions. It was just a fact and nothing more. She thought about how all the things that was in her everyday life was there because of mans emotions. If it wasn’t for mans emotions there would be no knowledge of anything because no would care. What kind of life would there be if no one cared. Of course there were some people who didn’t care about anything. This isn’t saying she doesn’t like those people but yet that didn’t say she knew if she did like them because she never met someone who didn’t care.
Of course this goes with her perspective of life. Skyler didn’t really care about the economy like most people did. Skyler cared about nature, animals, and everything around those two; of course this didn’t make her a tree hugger either. Of course no one would know this about her and no one would ever tell her otherwise. Of course she didn’t care if what people called her. But one of her weakness is animals and she would do anything for them no matter who was watching her.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ... Sleep is for the weak... ... And we will never rest, 'til we are dead... - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - His bags needed to be unpacked, mom wanted him to call when he landed, and it wouldn’t have hurt to introduce himself to his roommates, but he was doing none of this. And he wasn’t going to. Rhys had already made up his mind: Nothing was going to change. He would use his suitcase like a portable dresser, leave mom to hope that no news was good news, and keep to himself as best he could. Why should he change anything now, when it had gotten him this far in life?
Rhys slowly sat up. He had been lying on the forest floor, beneath a spot where a patch of night sky was visible through the foliage. A rather large root had been digging into the small of his back, and he put up with it for quite a while, but it was really starting to hurt. He wasn’t sure how long he had been lying there, but chances were he would have a bruise on his back tomorrow… After rubbing the sore spot, he decided to stand, stretch his legs, and not just lie here like he had been for so long. An hour or two at least, just lying there, and thinking. He wasn’t even sure where he was, since he had wandered far off the beaten path, back when the sun was still setting. Dusk made him antsy, he had to go somewhere, do something. The cougar in him was most active when the sun started to go down, and stayed that way until dawn.
From standing still, Rhys suddenly took off in a burst of energy. Maybe he should have stretched first, or jogged to start out, but it didn’t matter, because now he was sprinting. Dodging trees was easy enough, but he was making so much noise; it wasn’t right. Humans weren’t made for subtlety. It felt good, though, running just for the hell of it. But, not long after he started, the inevitable happened: his foot snagged on another one of those damn roots, and he lost his balance. Mid-fall, however, he felt the familiar sensation of his joints moving, spine elongating, claws forming in his toes and shortening fingers, among other painful feelings that all came with shifting. But, the pain was brief, and before he landed face first in the dirt, he managed to catch himself on his paws.
He ignored the bits of cloth floating around him, although when he was back in his human form, chances were he would be annoyed at having lost another outfit. Now, what mattered to him was exploring the area, and prowling what would be his new hunting grounds. As he walked, no twigs snapped beneath his paws, no leaves crunched; he could now see much better, and was avoiding anything that would make noise. He was simply a soundless, dark shape moving through the forest, listening intently for any changes in the silence. Word count: 542

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Skyler walked through the forest. The skunk inside of her wanted to get out but Skyler didn’t want to lose an outfit. Skyler had unpacked earlier today; so now all she had to do was get used to her surroundings. She had come quite familiar with the place seeing how she spent most of her day roaming around the campus. But this was her first time off the campus sense she been here. Skyler hasn’t met any of her roommates and thought it might stay that way; seeing how she was never really in the dorm that much. Skyler wasn’t the own for talking and making new friends. The reason why she didn’t make friends easily and that was because she shuts herself off from others.
Skyler walked through the forest still not sure where she should go. She came back on to the subject of emotions; why she did not know. Maybe she was fascinated by them; because it was yet other thing that could not be explained. Skyler had fascination for things that could not be explained; she was fascinated by other things but things that could not be explained she would be fascinated by these things for life. This was yet another thing no one would ever know about her. Unless she was really close to said person and could trust that person and even then they might not even know about her strange fascinations.
If Skyler wished her life would have came out differently then what it did. She wondered where she would be, how she would act, and how she would felt if her parents hadn’t have died. This was something Skyler didn’t like to talk or think about; but yet that is why she was out here. Because she was afraid to go to sleep at night thinking that if she did fall asleep then she would only have nightmares about that night. This always happened and Skyler would wake up in the early in the morning because of her dreams.
Skyler could hear noises in the distance. She wasn’t afraid that was the last thing she was. Skyler thought that the only predators on this island were people who could shift into one. Of course she still feared large birds and nothing would change that. The inner skunk wanted out; but Skyler kept it in. She knew she would be safer in skunk form but Skyler didn’t want to go through the pain of shifting. Skyler thought the noises was someone running or something. Then the noises stop, who or whatever it was must have stopped running. Skyler stopped to listen; nothing happened. “What a pity” said Skyler with her German accent. Skyler was so interested in the sound and seeing who or what was making it. Skyler hoped to run into whom it was but now it didn’t seem likely for her nothing was.

The cougar suddenly stopped, mid-step, and became perfectly still, save for his occasionally twitching ears. He had heard someone speak in a German accent, someone obviously female, and not too far away. Rhys suspected it was Skyler, the girl he had seen around campus once or twice, and who he tended to fight with on the computer… The cougar wanted to scope things out, though, so instead of turning and heading the other way, he walked towards the direction of the voice.
It wasn’t long before he spotted her. She was standing still, a few yards away from where he was crouched beside a bush. She was stubborn and frustrating, but she looked sort of lost. Maybe she was standing still because she was deciding which way to go? He took a step towards her, but then decided it would probably be best if he didn’t approach her as a cougar. At night, a pair of big, yellow eyes could be somewhat frightening. So, he shifted back into his human form…
Shit!! He mental cursed himself for changing back, and forgetting about the obvious… when he shifted, his clothes had been completely destroyed, so now, he was wearing absolutely nothing. He quickly scampered behind a large tree, but in his haste he made plenty of noise; his cover was most likely blown. Still, on the off chance that she wouldn’t notice him, he said nothing, and stayed perfectly still behind his tree.
On the other hand, maybe she’d understand about the whole shifting-and-losing-clothes deal. And, that would also mean, because they’d never met in person, she wouldn’t recognize his voice as he hid… this could actually work; maybe he’d get a second chance at a civil conversation with her. He wasn’t sure why that interested him so much… but for some reason, and although he would die before admitting it, her opinion of him mattered, even if only a little…
The smart thing to do would be to shift back to his cougar form and run like the wind, but his whole body ached already from shifting twice. That simply wasn’t an option, but maybe if he rested for a few minutes he could bare the pain and shift back. Now, though, it was simply a waiting game; did she hear him, or would he get a chance to escape?

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - the countdown begins to destroy ourselves WHO'S GOING TO FIGHT FOR WHAT'S RIGHT? - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Skyler looked around waiting for something to happen, anything to happen. But nothing did, why should she put herself through this. Why did she expect the impossible; was it normal, did everyone do it, and why does it always seem impossible to her. Why couldn’t anything be easy for her, not even making friends was easy for her, she always pushed people away. How she did this she did not know, it was different with each person. It’s not that Skyler didn’t want friends it’s just that she didn’t know how to act around people. This didn’t make her shy and she doesn’t mind people but she does come off the wrong way sometimes. Skyler had found out that it was easy to get people to leave her alone.
Skyler pushed the thoughts away it wasn’t something she wanted to think about at this moment. Skyler walked to a tree, it was a nice size tree to sit under. She figured that if she was out here she might as well draw or read. Skyler dropped her backpack next to a root that was sticking out of the tree. She looked up there was a gap in the branches, she was able to see the moon clearly and that meant more light for her to see. Skyler felt like someone was watching her. Was there someone watching her? She didn’t like the sound of someone watching her. Did Skyler have a stalker? Skyler shrugged away the feeling even though she still felt like someone was watching her.
Skyler heard something a couple yards away. Skyler looked to see what it was. There was someone watching her. But the question was who was it? Skyler walked closer to the spot where she had heard the noise. “Who’s there?” asked Skyler would they even answer, would she know who it was? “Show yourself” said Skyler her voice calm, but she did sound a bit pissed. Skyler wasn’t afraid she was anything but that. Skyler thought about what she said last. “Come to think about it if you shifted twice don’t show yourself” Said Skyler her German accent coming out in waves. This was the first time she had said that many words in English.
Skyler walked back over to the tree that she was at before. Then she turned around to look for any signs of someone. Skyler had a bunch of emotions going through her. This brought back her thoughts from before. About emotions running everything, people’s actions, peoples mind, what happened in our life. All these things revolved around emotions. Skyler wondered why emotions were so powerful and why couldn’t anyone explain it. Skyler sat down on the ground and took her sketch book out. Whoever it was has to come out sooner or later and she could stay here all night. She also grabbed her glasses and a pencil. Skyler put her glasses on and looked up at the sky, she then grabbed her pecil and put the eraser end in her mouth. This was a habit she had of doing when she couldn’t think of anything to draw.

With his back against the tree trunk, Rhys waited for Skyler to either leave or say something, but he didn't have to wait long.
"Who's there?"
He opened his mouth to answer, but then closed it again. After a pause, Skyler told him to show himself, but that definitly wasn't going to happen. Luckily, it did seem that she understood the troubles that came with being a shifter. So, after waiting a few moments, he forced himself to speak up. "I... did shift twice, I wasn't thinking..." He paused, not sure what else to say. Finally, he added, "Sorry if I freaked you out, I wasn't trying to. You just looked like you could use directions."
That was civil enough. Rhys wondered what she was doing... it sounded like she had sat down. So, did that mean he was going to be stuck here until she left? Very quickly, he looked from behind the tree to see what she was doing. She had a sketch book out... He tried to remember if he had ever mentioned what animal he shifted into... If not, he could rest for a bit, then shift back, and it would be fine.
For the time being, it couldn't hurt to try to engage her in a conversation. "I'm... Jason." First name he thought of, hopefully it was believable. "I've seen you around campus once or twice... didn't know you were an artist." At least only some of that was a lie. He had seen her before, and noticed a curious scar on her neck, but that started the dislike between them. Still, Rhys had only been looking at her because he thought she was cute, and the scar led him to glance at her wrist, which had a few more faded scars. Obviously, being nosey about how she had gotten them would not be a mistake he would make again. It appeared to be a delicate subject, and hopefully, the topic of art would be much more safe.
He still wasn't positive what intrigued him about her, but he had a few theories. The foreign accent, the good looks, the stand-offish nature and air of mystery about her. It wasn't really important what it was, anyway... what was important was that he was being drawn in, and maybe this time curiosity wouldn't kill the cat.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Skyler looked down at the sketch book on her lap. Skyler thought about what she could draw. Skyler could draw a lot of things so in this situation; she should be asking what she wanted to draw. Skyler took off her glasses and looked up at the moon. Then she looked at the spot where she had heard noises coming from. Skyler wondered if she was right about someone being there. Skyler put on her glasses again; she started to think about what she was going to draw again. Skyler thought about for a few moments then she decided on drawing a tiger. Then she remembered that she had started a tiger before and went to look at it. Skyler found the page it was on; the drawing was only half way finished.
Skyler heard a voice; "I... did shift twice, I wasn't thinking..." it sounded like a male. "Dies ist, was geschieht, wenn Sie glauben, dass es nicht" said Skyler she had said it in German for a reason. What she had said was This is what happens when you don’t think. Skyler didn’t want to sound rude but she just had to say it; hopefully he didn’t speak German and had no clue what she had said. After she said what she had to say, she heard him say something else. “ Hmm well what’s done is done; and I don’t need directions…….at least not till around three o’clock” said Skyler. Skyler thought about what he had said before about him shifting and it came to her that he wouldn’t be wearing anything. “If you like I could leave?” she asked only because she didn’t know if he would have liked to leave.
Skyler had kept her glasses on and would probably keep them seeing how she wouldn’t be able to take her glasses off and look at who she was talking to. This made her wonder if he was looking at her and could see her. She wondered what his shift was; she also wondered if she knew him and if he knew her. Of course there was a lot of question running through her mind right now. But Skyler wasn’t the one to ask questions, heck she wasn’t the one to talk either. Skyler went back to drawing her Tiger waiting for him to say something more if he had anything to say. But of course there was the one question she had asked him.
After a couple moments passed she heard him say something else. He had said his name; well it was one question that was out of her mind. She looked up from what she was doing “I’m Skyler” she said but of course she didn’t know if he knew her or not. For all she knew he did know his name and might even be a stalker. But of course this was highly unlikely for her. Skyler then went back to drawing. "I've seen you around campus once or twice... didn't know you were an artist." Yet again he started talking. “You have? Yes I’m an artist, art is my major” said Skyler. So this guy did know who she was. Skyler wondered out of all the people he probably knew was she the one to stand out? This was yet another thing she thought never happened to her. How was it that there were so many people that went to this school but yet he remembered her?

Rhys thought about her offer, but decided to decline, since he couldn’t return to campus like this anyway. His plan was to wait for his body to stop aching, and then he’d shift and take off. Probably five more minutes of waiting behind the tree, since the pain was starting to subside… “I’m gonna shift in a couple minutes, so it’s fine, you don’t have to leave. Just have to rest for a bit…” He didn’t exactly want to leave, but this was just too awkward, not talking face to face, and feeling the breeze in places you just shouldn’t feel the breeze. So, he stood there silently leaning up against his tree for about a minute, until he thought of something else to say. “I can point you towards the school from here, if you want.” He looked up through the branches overhead, and a few moments later found the glowing North Star. He drew an imaginary perpendicular line down to earth, until his little line met the horizon, and he was able to indicate which way was North from there. If his memory served to be correct, he could tell which way to go from here to get to the academy…
“If you go left from where you’re sitting, you’ll end up pretty close, I think.” He couldn’t be too confident in his ability to tell directions, since he hadn’t been a Cubscout for years, but it was better than simply guessing at where to go. He did wonder, though, what was she going to do until three, and why did she have to go? “If you don’t mind me asking, what happens at three?” Wow. He could sound pretty polite when he put some effort into it. But, he did wonder what she had to do so late. Rhys was also a creature of the night, but he never made plans; he simply wandered around until he found something entertaining.
The mysterious feeling about her was remerging. He couldn't be sure, because this was their first real encounter, but she didn't seem like she would ever be an open book, even if he did get to know her. It was simply a vibe he got when he looked at her; she wasn't an easy-to-read girl. Still... he would just have to find out for himself what she was like, since he didn't like guessing about it.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - the countdown begins to destroy ourselves WHO'S GOING TO FIGHT FOR WHAT'S RIGHT? - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Skyler sat under the tree waiting for him to reply. Skyler didn’t think she knew him. She had a few reasons on why she thought she didn’t know him. First she didn’t reorganize his name; she wasn’t the one to remember names so she can’t really say this was the reason. Then there was his voice it didn’t sound familiar, but she could have met him on the computer, but she made sure she remembered the names of the people she met on there. Of course there was the whole thing about her not seeing his face, if there’s one thing she had no problem remembering is people’s faces. Ok so now that she thought about it there is no fact that she did or didn’t know him. Skyler thought about asking him, but wasn’t sure if she should. But then again she might be talking to him for a bit and there was the possibility that he might want her to leave. Oh well she didn’t think there was any harm to ask “Do I know you?” Asked Skyler, though she didn’t look up from her sketch book.
Skyler kept sketching away it was one thing besides reading and learning that she loved to do. After a few moments past by she had heard his answer “fine with me” came Skyler’s short answer. Even though Skyler would have liked to see his human face not his shift’s face. That way if she saw his face maybe she would remember who he was if she knows him. Skyler didn’t know way she cared, why did she care she never did before. Yet she had this feeling like there was something that was not right about him or about this situation or is it about what he was telling her. Skyler couldn’t figure it out and thought it was better left unsaid and unknown.
Skyler snapped back to real life and what was going on at the moment. She had heard him say something about showing her which way to get back to the school. Skyler thought about his question, of course by the time she was ready to go back she probably wouldn’t be in this spot. Unless if he stays and wants to talk till then. Of course she wouldn’t know why he would she’s not that much of a talker this is one of the reasons why she doesn’t have any friends. She wondered if his memory was good and of to lead her the right direction or did he have another way to tell her then memory? But of course before she could say that she probably wouldn’t be here at three she had already told her which way to go from here. “Thank you, but I doubt I would be here at this spot when I’m ready to go back….Unless of course I didn’t get bored” said Skyler. Skyler was referring to her not being bored that he would stay and keep her company.
Skyler then went back to; why did she care. Of course she liked the company and didn’t mind it. But she also knew she could live without it. Of course there was one thing that she didn’t like about company is that people tended to be nosey and wanted to know about her parents and her past. This was another thing why she didn’t have friends because most people wanted her to be an opened book but she wasn’t like that. Skyler heard him ask her what happens at three she didn’t know how nosey people could be till she came to this school. First Rhys asking about her scars and now him. But of course she couldn’t blame Rhys for asking; he didn’t know and probably never would know about the night that still haunts her. “Nothing really that is just the time I usually get tired and go to bed” It was a simple answer to a simple question and a question that didn’t have anything to do with her past.

Rhys shrugged, but then remembered she couldn’t see him, so he added, “Alright, that makes sense…” She stayed up late, like him. He wasn’t even sure if they were supposed to be out here at this time of night, but it was a bit too late to be wondering about that, since they were already here. If it was against the rules, they should’ve made it more clear, anyway… "A night owl, I guess?” As soon as the words were out of his mouth, the hoot of an owl could be heard, piercing through the silence of the night. It was in the direction Rhys was facing, and not too far off. He couldn’t hold back a laugh as the bird hooted again. “I think it agrees with me…”If he was in his cougar form, that owl would be in danger, but since he was quite human at the moment, he simply wanted to catch a glimpse of it. So, Rhys peered through the branches and leaves in front of him, and quickly spotted a pair of shining eyes, illuminated by a beam of moonlight. It was up in a tree, closer to him than he expected it to be. From what he could tell, it was rather large. He had no idea what kind of owl it was, but it had guts, getting this close to two people. Still watching the owl, for lack of anything better to watch, he decided he should speak to Skyler again, since it had been quiet between them for a bit. He wasn't sure what to say, and after thinking on it, he decided he should take his leave. That would probably be best... after all, this was a weird scenario, but maybe he could get her phone number... any way of contacting her without being face to face would work fine too. "So, Skyler, I think I'm going to take off, if you're fine here." He tried to sound casual, even though he still felt impossibly awkward. After thinking about a way to ask for her number, politely and nonchalantly, he finally opened his mouth to speak, but stopped. He noticed, it had been unusually quiet; Skyler hadn't said anything yet. So, he turned and looked out from behind his tree, trying to see what it was she was up to. Word Count: 437

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Skyler sat there in the dark with other person. Even though she couldn’t see him he was still there. Skyler had finished her drawing, a tiger’s face; it was harder than people think. She had to make everything more noticeable, like the eyes, and the strips. She thought about drawing something else but decided not to. Skyler placed her sketch book in her bag; while she was in her bag she took out her Iphone and looked to see what time it was. It was about 1:30; she wasn’t ready to go back yet but maybe she could sneak into the library. Skyler didn’t know what she would do once this guy leaves. Skyler could go to the beach there was one place she could go. Skyler put her Iphone back in her backpack and then she put her glasses in there too.
Skyler heard him say something and looked to where it was coming from. She noticed that he had avoided her question about if she knew him. A night owl; that was something she didn’t want to be like. Even though it was true she was a night owl but she hated large birds. Then she heard it the hoot of an owl. Why did he have to say something about an owl why couldn’t he have just left it alone? Skyler heard it hoot again, she started to back up behind the trees. She hated large birds before she shifted but now she was terrified of them. Skyler felt the pull of the skunk wanting to run, run far away. Skyler still heard the owl hooting.
Skyler wondered where it was and what kind of owl it is. Skyler had her backed up against the tree. Skyler drew a deep breath and then exhaled. She turned around and was now facing the tree. She wasn’t going to go back around the tree she didn’t know where the owl was. Skyler then thought about climbing the tree to get a better look. It seems the only way she could go. Skyler saw a low branch about chest high and it looked like it would hold her weight. She walked over toward it and hauled herself up on to it and sat on it before moving on to the next branch. Skyler went from branch to branch getting higher as she went. She was a very good climber she guessed it came with being a spotted skunk. Skyler stopped climbing when she thought it was a good couple feet of the ground in this case she thought about seven feet of the ground.
Her luck ran out when the branch she stops on gives way under her weight. Skyler heard the crack of the branch as it breaks. Skyler’s eyes winded in horror as she knew what was going to happen next. Skyler felt the breath knock out of her as she falls to the ground with her back to the ground. Of course she felt herself shifting into her skunk form. Skyler was very good about controlling her shifting but she did have her times and this one going to be one of them. Skyler felt the pain saw the fur and the claws coming out. Skyler knew this wasn’t going to be good. Skyler knew that as an instinct that she would turn around and try to land on her feet. Skyler had fully shifted in only second and was now looking down at the ground in skunk form. In a few seconds she felt herself hit the ground. Skyler was right it didn’t end well she had landed on her left paw the wrong way and she knew she had sprained her wrist, maybe even broke it. Skyler felt her clothes fall on her.
Skyler took her jewelry off. She stayed under her clothes she didn’t want the owl to see her in skunk form. While she was up in the tree she was able to see the owl and see what kind of owl it is, it is a great horned owl. What was she supposed to do now wait till it left and when was that going to be? Then she remembered Jason was still out there, but then she remembered him saying something about him leaving.

The silence was bothering him, so finally he looked out from behind the tree, just to see Skyler quietly making her way up the tree she had been sitting under only moments before. She was occasionally looking over in the owl’s direction, and looked quite uneasy. There was something about that owl that she didn’t like… he glanced up at the bird’s dimly glowing eyes, hoping it didn’t intend to suddenly fly away. He shifted, and as he did, the pain of the shift blocked out the sound of the branch snapping beneath Skyler, but it only took a moment for the cat to realize that something was happening behind him. Cautiously, he looked out from behind the tree blocking his view, and spotted a pile of clothes and a breathing lump beneath them. He had no interest in the lump; instead, he looked back at where the owl had been, but the branch snapping must have scared it off… What happened next seemed to occur in about a second: the owl dove from a different perch, talons outstretched, looking to grasp the little lump that was Skyler. Apparently it had seen the skunk land, and was desperate enough to go after it. It was a rather big bird, but without hesitation, Rhys snarled and pounced, caught the owl in his mouth, and crushed it between his jaws. The bird was dead almost instantly, its blood wet the fur around the cougar’s mouth, and little tufts of its feathers slowly floated towards the forest floor. He looked around, owl between his teeth, and spotted the pile of clothes. He set the owl down beside it, then stepped back and starred at the rising and falling lump, resisting the urge to paw at Skyler like a toy. He didn’t want to annoy or scare her, so he managed to resist the cat’s instincts, and sat down as he waited for her to come out of her hiding spot. He wasn’t sure what she was; too big to be a weasel, but it had the long shape of one… he could only guess, but skunk never came to mind. Slowly, he slid down from sitting into a lying position, and then flopped onto his side, getting comfortable. He wasn’t sure how long she would need to recover from her fall, since it wouldn’t have been very far for a human, but for a smaller sized animal like she was, she might have gotten the wind knocked out of her… Word Count: 454
