"Yes, of course."
Alright, so his best bet was to nod and hope she opened up a bit more. It was fine, really, he didn't mind her keeping to herself, but the secret she was keeping seemed to trouble her, and so that troubled him. for a moment, Sultan wondered how long she had kept whatever she was keeping- or indeed if she was, he could just be being his normal suspicious self and making all of this up! With a small smile he nodded, looking down and thinking for a bit, mostly waiting for a reaction. Most laughed it off nervously before putting the pieces together. It didn't really change their opinions, the philosophy teacher knew, and he still got.. .. average grades in the class. Nothing special or special treatment, but Sultan figured that wasn't normal and maybe they were just a special case. No, he wasn't making fun of her. On the contrary, had he known her true secret, the things he said would have been considered encouragement. They would have all but screamed 'it's fine to be human, damnit!' but of course, he had no idea.
"Yes indeed." he nodded happily and smiled wider. "Well.. not any more. Daddy dearest doesn't like shifters. I probably have a new sibling out there ready to take the throne in a few years when he's old enough." he shrugged, looking down sadly for the first time since he had met Virginia. With a heavy shrug he looked back up. "But by blood and former, yes." playing toss with his ring, he threw it a few feet into the air before catching it with the opposite hand, and vice versa. Every so often he'd catch it on his finger and feel completely amazed with himself, letting out a small laugh before throwing it up again.
Stopping after a while, he sighed and leaned against the building a bit. "Yeah.. sometimes I wish I was human, ya'know? Could have stayed with family, gotten married, had a family, had the world- it seems.. but that wasn't what fate had in mind." he shrugged a bit and turned his head to look at her. "You ever wish you were human?" Sultan pulled his eyebrows together sharply, honestly wondering. By this time he had forgotten his suspicions and pegged her for a cat, just as she had said. He idly wondered what kind of cat. Cuddly house cat? Lioness? Tigress? Or a giant shaggy tabby? Maybe a perpetual kitten. Oh whatever, that would be like trying to imagine him as a flittering little dove. It was odd, and kind of unpleasant, really.
Had she ever wished she were human? Had any shifter besides him? Well at least one had to. Most of the time Sultan hated being a shifter. It just reminded him how.. well.. screwed he was if he ever went back to Europe. He'd like to be able to walk around with no fear of shifting if he saw a dead rat or something. His eyes would be normal, no one would question them, and he'd be a normal, boring guy with normal, boring needs and wants. No going out at midnight to keep up his eyesight in the dark, no being tired all day unless he drank like 6 energy shots every morning.
In the midst of all his thinking he didn't even hear her answer.
Outfit.
